I finally tucked the last letter inside of the locker, looking around to make sure no one saw me. There were more this year than in the past, and it took me longer than I expected. Every year I always wrote an anonymous letter to every new student in our grade, with advice. This year, however, was slightly different. On a spontaneous whim instead of signing every letter as anonymous, I signed a single letter with my initials, B.E. As soon as I slipped the note in the locker, I regretted it, but it was too late to turn back now.
I was running late, and it was my sister's fault (she always hogs the bathroom to do her hair and makeup even though she's only a freshman). I was already nervous about starting at a new school, and being late did nothing to help those nerves. As I shut my locker out of the corner of my eye, I saw what looked like a piece of paper fall out of my locker. When I picked it up and glanced at it, it looked like a letter to me. Confused and intrigued, I tucked it in with my things to read later if class got boring.
The whole class turned as someone walked into the classroom late. Mr. Kline requested that I assist him with the assignment, and I belligerently agreed, a feeling in my gut saying that he was the one that received the letter with my abbreviated name on it.
I eventually read the letter and yearned to learn the author of it so that I could befriend and thank them.
I watched James as he tried to figure out who the author of my letter was. Eventually, I took pity on him and informed him that it was me.
When Brenda told me that she was the author of the letter I received at the beginning of the school year, I was slightly surprised. She was so quiet and kept to herself; it was out of character. Despite that, the whole time, I was hoping that it was her. Additionally, I knew there was more to her than met the eye.
Over time, James and I became good friends, there were a few times that we thought about dating, but we decided that we were better off as friends. Despite that, we made a pact saying that if we were both still single after his 27th birthday, we would try being a couple. We decided to stay friends after graduation, but I moved to New York for college, and we naturally grew apart. After years of not hearing from each other, we ran into each other as I was moving back home. I was out on a run for groceries late at night, and I accidentally bumped into someone. Not seeing who it was, I apologized and started to continue with the rest of my shopping when a familiar voice called my name.
After a few years, my friendship with Brenda had died off, and we hadn't seen each other since, but despite that, I knew right away that the person that bumped into me was Brenda. As she started to walk away, I called out her name, and my heart soared when she turned, and I saw that it was her. She has changed since she left, but she still held a bit of the Brenda I knew in High School. Remembering the pact we had made and hoping to resurrect our friendship. I invited her to my party tomorrow.
I was ecstatic when James invited me to his 27th birthday party. It wasn't until I was falling asleep that I remember the pact that we made. At the party I rekindled my friendship with James, I was the last one left at the party, and about to leave with no hope that he remembered our pact when he grabbed my hand and kissed me. "I hope you're single," He whispered. "I am," I responded, pulling him in for another kiss.
