Chapter 13: Immortality
Third persons POV
"Cream go and get your mother! And tell Chuck to fetch one of the town doctors just in case!" Sally ordered straight away.
Cream gave a nod with her watery eyes dashed off up to the ground level. Shadow didn't hesitate to pick (Y/N) up, trying his best to ignore the blood, (Y/N)'s blood, soaking through his gloves and staining the majority of her torso.
A rushed walk carried (Y/N) back to her room, he placed her on the bed gently taking a couple of steps back. Sally being her level headed self held (Y/N)'s wrist and began counting her pulse.
"Her pulse is frantic." Sally gasped.
"What do you think could have caused this?" Shadow asked shakily, trying his best not to look at the blood.
"I don't know, but Vanilla will. Are you sure Scourge only had a hold of her for a couple of seconds?" Sally asked.
When she didn't receive an answer she glanced behind her Shadow was no where to be seen. Brushing it off as he couldn't stand the blood she returned her attention to (Y/N), who was now gasping for breath.
But pulling up her sleeve to take her pulse again her bruises ,were completely gone.
Shadow's POV
Kicking the door of a near by bathroom open fiercely I ripped off my soaked gloves throwing them into the sink, being sure not to loosen my rings .
The smell, I've got to get rid of the smell...
Frantically turning on the tap water gushed out and I violently scrubbed at my hands at the blood that was now in my fur. But it did little good as I could still smell it!
I then saw her blood was also on the hems of my sleeves. So I literally tore off my jacket, hearing the seam tear, and chucked it on the floor. Resting my hands on the rim of the sink I couldn't stop my hands from shaking. My breaths were also ragged, and my heart beat was once again elevated.
Because I could still smell it.
I'm unstable. So giving up I knew I had to get out of the building, away from the smell. Fumbling I turned the tap off leaving my drowned gloves and torn jacket, staggering out the room and up the stairs to the ground level.
Stumbling I made it to a door that led outside, despite it being morning the sky was a dark grey snow lightly blocking my view. I welcomed the cold that numbed my senses, even though being a vampire I was cold enough.
I let my knees cinch beneath me and I knelt on the ground, the snow saturating my trousers. Grabbing hand fulls of snow I pressed it against my face hoping it might in some way numb my brain, prevent me from feeling a thing.
I can't loose control, I can't loose control... I can't hurt anyone else.
It wasn't safe for me to be in there. My rings and eyes were both glowing, I already knew that. It wasn't safe for me to be in there, I didn't want to risk harming them. I didn't want to risk harming her.
But the smell of her blood. It was so sweet, it was intoxicating. I could have gotten drunk of merely the scent of her blood. But what terrified the most is I haven't experienced blood lust this strong since...
I can't trust myself to go back inside, at least not until I've properly fed. With my breathing and heart rate finally back to their natural rate I was about to run into town to feed, but I stopped. When I heard faint screaming coming from inside.
Third person's POV
Anguished screams rang through the underground level as Vanilla and Sally desperately tried to tend to (Y/N), but she was barely conscious thrashing about flailing her limbs around screaming blue murder panting and sweating.
"IT HURTS! AAAAH! IT HURTS!"
"Sally hold down her arms! She might injure herself!" Vanilla ordered.
Sally did as she was told but (Y/N) was stronger than she looked still lashing about, by now crying and still shrieking about how much it hurt.
"Cream pass me a scrap of cloth we need to gag otherwise she might bite off her tongue!" Vanilla continued to order.
Yet her tone remained calm, her voice only being raised to be heard over (Y/N)'s yells. Nodding Cream, who was also had tears running down her cheeks, grabbed a cloth and handed it to her mother. Tying the gag as gently as she could (Y/N)'s screams were reduced to whimpers.
At that moment Shadow hurriedly came into the room, but Cream was the only one who could spare him any attention.
"What happened?" he asked her straight away, not taking his eyes off (Y/N).
Cream gave a tiny sniff trying to compose herself enough to answer.
"W-we don't know. Mother figured out (Y/N) had been poisoned so she gave her an injection that was meant to counter the effects, but as soon as Mother administered it she started screaming." she explained as clearly as she could.
Poison? How!? Shadow thought as he rapidly raced through possibilities as to how this could have happened, he hadn't let her out of his sight apart from when she was with Scourge. But he could think of no poison that made a mortal react as violently as this.
But what if what Scourge said was true, and she wasn't mortal anymore... could that be why she was in agony right now?
A long shrill rip then cut through Shadows thoughts as (Y/N) tore the gag with her bared fangs.
"Vanilla she bit through the gag!" Sally warned.
"Cream we need more cloth!" Vanilla called.
Still shaken up Cream hesitated but just as (Y/N) was about to injure herself she bit into something soft yet solid. Shadow subtly winced as (Y/N)'s fangs dug into his wrist, blood gushing out.
"Shadow!" Sally exclaimed.
"Vanilla she needs a sedative, if she is immortal now she'll be fine!" Shadow instructed ignoring the fact his wrist had replaced the gag.
"Okay hold her as still as you can." Vanilla said holding another injection.
"It hurts, it hurts..."
Shadow was able to hold her still just long enough for Vanilla to administer the sedative. Her sobs started to dye down until eventually she was able to rest.
Your POV
There were voices, shouting voices everywhere. And the only thing you were aware of was an immense amount of pain, it felt as though you were burning all over, like something was rushing around your body inflicting pain at every cell.
The next thing you knew your mouth was filled with an iron taste, before you eventually felt yourself slipping away. Gratified for relief.
There was that same lullaby again.
Your mother was humming it enjoying the water under the moon and starlit sky. That tune was comforting, it reminded you of times when you weren't scared, when you weren't in pain. Not like now.
Carrying on the sweet melody she turned to face you and you saw her young face for a second time. She was young and beautiful. That same face of curiosity, and then it turned into a slight smirk. As if teasing.
"So the rumors are true..."
But that voice, it wasn't hers. It came from behind. What rumors? And whose voice was that?
That was your last thought as you slipped away again.
Shadows's POV
"Aconite?" Sally asked.
"Yes, from the symptoms you described (Y/N) suffering from before I administered the anti-poison I can only suspect that she was poisoned by Aconite." Vanilla nodded.
Once Vanilla was assured (Y/N) would be fine Cream stayed with her to watch her as we three discussed what had just happened. However by now I could once again smell the blood. But I was thankfully able to put it out my mind.
However what I just witnessed and the amount of pain she had been in. That was something I too was trying to suppress the memory of. Trying and failing.
"But how was she even poisoned in the first place?" Sally asked.
"Cream told me that when (Y/N) arrived she had small scabs and bruises on her arms curtsy of Scourge, my assumption is that he laced his finger tips with poison. And the poison wouldn't take effect until the scabs healed." Vanilla hypothesized.
"That certainly makes sense." Sally thought out loud.
"However scabs as small as that take about a weeks to heal, where as (Y/N)'s healed within a matter of hours. Plus Aconite is the most fatal poison known to man, yet (Y/N) miraculously survived, which I'm afraid proves-
"That (Y/N) really is immortal." I finished the sentence.
"Yes." Vanilla said sadly.
"I'm willing to bet that Scourge poisoned (Y/N) just to prove he wasn't messing with us, the sick bastard." Sally grumbled.
"But what I cannot work out is why her body had to go through such strain in order to heal." Vanilla wondered.
"I've seen it before." I interjected.
"What?" Sally asked.
"We vampires heal easy as everyone knows, but you also know we aren't the only supernatural beings out there. But other supernatural beings that can self heal have to go through several thousand times as much pain which was inflicted on them." I explained.
Over my many centuries of living I have met a wide variety of other supernatural beings. And I saw several times many immortals who weren't vampires going through unimaginable amounts of pain to heal.
"So (Y/N) is a supernatural being, but not a vampire. This could help us find out what she is." Sally said.
I gave a small nod in answer.
"If you'll excuse me I'm going to inform Chuck that everything is alright now. Shadow would you check on Cream for me? She was understandably shaken up." Vanilla asked me.
"Of course." I answered.
Vanilla then headed upwards to the ground level as I walked to (Y/N)'s room. Opening the door Cream was sat on a chair besides then bed reading a book on her lap. And (Y/N) was still sleeping, although judging from her expression it was anything but a peaceful slumber.
I gently tapped Cream's shoulder to get her attention, and glancing at the book it was about supernatural creatures. She was trying to help by researching.
"Mr Shadow how is your wrist?" Cream asked straight away putting the book aside.
"Its fine thank you, your mother insisted on bandaging it up for me although it will be healed by tomorrow." I reassured her.
"Good." she said with a small smile.
"How is she?" I asked.
"She keeps twitching, but at least she's not screaming anymore. I didn't like her being in that much pain." she said sadly her ears dropping.
"Well she's fine now, why don't you go and see your mother? She's worried about you, I'll watch over her." I offered.
Cream hesitated before giving a tiny nod.
"Okay, thank you Mr Shadow."
She then quiet left the room.
Taking Cream's seat she had taken her book with her. most likely to carry on trying to help. Leaving me with my thoughts. Gazing at (Y/N) she twitched every now and again, clearly not resting peacefully.
She was just as innocent as her...
I promised myself I wouldn't get any closer to her and yet here I was, I even volunteered to stay at the safe house with her.
I could no longer tell myself the lie that I was merely following orders. No now, I was repaying a long overdue debt.
