Chapter 15: A Solution

Your POV

Werewolves transform at the night of a full moon....

The Seer is known for its power to predict the future...

A Succubus's seduce men with their music...

Mermaids have been known to be both gentle and violent...

Sighing to yourself you stopped skim reading the pages only looking at the extravagant ink illustrations in the book you were reading, that was so old and battered the pages were like tissue paper.

It had been just under a month since you had arrived at the safe house and the dull task of research had started once again. It was mainly you and Cream that did the research though, Amy wasn't about much sending messages too and from the Hunter Society and getting new info. And Shadow tended to keep to himself, although you always saw him at least once a day.

Some times he'd be dusted with snow having just gone to the village to feed. And if you had a conversation was a different matter, and if you did it would always concern whether or not you and Cream were any closer to finding a solution. Which you were trying to find sat in one of the sitting rooms reading a book on mythical creatures from the library.

A click of the door made you look up though as Cream prettily stepped in.

"Have you had any luck?" she asked sweetly taking a seat next to you.

You had to admit that having Cream for company certainly lightened up the place keeping it at least a little cheery.

"No, but I've got more books if you want to help." you said gesturing to the small pile on the coffee table in front of you.

"Of course." she smiled.

Grabbing a book she too started to read away.

"Which book are you reading?" she asked.

"Um the earliest edition of how to identify supernatural creatures. So far I haven't come across any creatures that look like regular mobians, are immortal and have increased healing abilities." you said showing her the front cover.

"OK, then I'll look for those things too." she nodded.

"Did you just talk to Amy right now?" you wondered.

"Yes."

"Any news?"

"Only that they haven't found any traces of Scourge or Fiona, it's as if they've completely disappeared into thin air." she said in a sad tone.

Over the month you had been here both research and the Society's attempts to find Scourge, Fiona and his informant had failed. So here you were, reading books and waiting for any news.

"But don't worry they'll find him sure enough, and I bet one of my mothers famous strawberry short cakes that we'll find something useful in these books." Cream said optimistically.

"Okay you're on." you chuckled lightly.

As the pair of you carried on reading with notebooks and pens at your sides in case you found anything worth noting you on instinct, despite not knowing its origins anymore, held your cross.

"You always hold your cross when your reading, it must be really special to you." she smiled.

But you hesitated in giving a reply.

"it was special, but now I'm not so sure anymore..."

Cream's POV

~Later that day~

I had to stand on tip toes as I tried to reach the top shelf of the airing cupboard, why do I have to be so short? I was about to try one more time when a hand grabbed the blanket I had been trying to reach.

"Here you go."

I saw it was Shadow who had grabbed it for me.

"Thank you Mr Shadow." I thanked taking it.

"Why do you need that? Are you cold?" he asked.

"No I'm fine." I smiled shaking my head.

But I continued knowing he wanted to know why, his usual practical sense.

"It's because Miss (Y/N) has fallen asleep as we carried on our research, she seems really tired at the moment as I've noticed over the past few weeks she's had black marks under her eyes. This is about the third time she's fallen asleep and I didn't want her to be cold." I explained.

Mr Shadow gave a nod of his head in understanding before walking off to somewhere else. I too made a move and went back to Miss (Y/N).

Third Person's POV

After that a new form of routine started to develop over the space of two weeks. Where ever Cream and (Y/N) continued to research, whether it be the library, (Y/N)'s bedroom or one of the sitting rooms, (Y/N) always managed to doze off.

She'd seem enthusiastic enough towards the research but come the time of evening her head would start to nod, and she would eventually fall asleep. Which Cream took as her cue to grab another blanket.

(Y/N) would wake up little more than an hour later and claim she was fine, but then when Cream went to bed (Y/N) would stay awake long into the night researching by herself. As she was taking any chance she could to try and find a solution to stop being such a trouble to the entire Hunter Society.

But this would lead to (Y/N) being very tired throughout the days.

Most of the time when Cream went to grab a blanket Shadow was around to pass it to her, but come the end of the first week he moved the blankets to a lower shelf. But every time he saw Cream walk into whatever room they were researching in he found it alarming how often (Y/N) was falling asleep.

Until he finally figured out by himself, (Y/N) slept better when she knew someone was there.

Your POV

"You're going to the village tonight?"

"Yes, me and mother are visiting a friend there." Cream replied obviously happy.

This was news to you, it was coming up to two months since you had been here, still no closer to finding a solution, but this was Cream's first mention of leaving the safe house.

"It's best we go tonight as there's a full moon, but don't worry Amy will be guarding the grounds and Shadow will be down here in case you need anything." Cream reassured you.

"Alright that's fine, but you make sure to have fun." you said.

"I promise!" she chirped.

Shortly after Cream left with Vanilla leaving you alone. You wondered where Shadow was but already knew he most likely would just wait in his room unless you needed anything. Knowing how you were going to spend your night you headed straight to the library.

There were already a couple of books laid out on the desk you had been sat at, even after two months all this research had been for nothing. But there wasn't much else you could do to help. So you took a seat reading for the 100th time about supernatural beings.

As you did you thought of how much a nuisance you were being to so many people. Everyone at the safe house for a start, and then all those at the Hunter Society trying to track down Scourge and Fiona. Yes they're criminals but surely the Society wouldn't be hunting for them as hard as they were if you weren't involved.

So many people, Cream just giving the perfect example, had put all their lives on hold just to help you. And all you could do was flick through books. But you were determined to find any solution, even if that meant.....

Shadow's POV

Flicking over the most recent reports that had been sent I allowed myself to give a heavy sigh. All slight leads we all thought we had on Scourge constantly turned out to be fake yet it was easy to tell he was playing a game with us.

And he was enjoying it.

I was slowly getting more frustrated as no matter what anyone did we were no closer to finding a solution to this whole predicament. Even with me and Amy sending messages to the Society to help find Scourge and (Y/N) and Cream researching 24/7.

I myself had taken it upon myself to carry out whatever research I could when I could in between guarding the grounds and going to the village to feed and communicating with the Society. But nothing seemed to be helping.

"I'll look at those in more detail later..."

Tossing the reports aside I left my room to see what (Y/N) was currently doing. However when I glanced in the sitting room she wasn't, nor was she in her bedroom. My search came to an end when I reached the library.

She was sat at the desk her head resting on a book, asleep.

I gave a breathy sigh. I was aware that she was struggling to sleep and it looked like I'd have to be the one to say something about it, seeming though Cream is too polite to. So stepping up to the desk I lightly grabbed her shoulder and gave it a gentle shake.

In a sudden jolting movement she sat up harshly taking a hold of my wrist. Her swift movements slightly startled me and she looked up at me clearly not fully awake, panting a tiny bit her eyes widened when she realised it was me.

"S-sorry..." she said timidly letting go of my wrist.

She then glanced back at the books on the desk.

"What's that matter?" she asked making conversation.

"I think it's clear enough." I said.

"I was just resting my eyes." she defended herself pretending to go back to her books.

"Of course you were."

A silence fell as she refused to make eye contact.

"If you're struggling to sleep we can't help you unless you tell us." I started.

"I'm fine." she brushed off my concern.

"I'm sure you are with you falling asleep in front of Cream for the past two weeks."

Still refusing to look at me she sat there still and silent.

"(Y/N) circumstances at the problem are unpredictable, we might have to transport you to another safe house in a matter of weeks for all we know. And that would require you to be in the best of health." I said loosing me patience.

(Y/N) stayed still for a matter of seconds before giving a heavy sigh and turning to face me simply saying:

"Nightmares."

"Nightmares?"

"Yes they go in a pattern. One night I dream of my mum in a forest and then the next night I have a nightmare about the night my parents were killed and when Scourge tried to take me. And then the next night I dream of my mum again, they used to progress but they don't any more. It's always the same dreams." She explained.

I admit it's not all that surprising. If I could dream then I dare say I too would be plagued with nightmares of the past.

"Is that it? Nightmares?" I asked.

She hesitated before adding.

"I've also been staying up late to complete more research, and..." She trailed off.

"And?" I pushed her.

"I-I find it easier to sleep knowing someone else is there. I shared a bedroom with over ten girls until I was 16 so I'm used not being alone." She confessed her gaze fixed on the floor.

That was certainly understandable.

"Would it help if I were perhaps stand outside your door at night?" I suggested.

"I c-couldn't ask that if you." She refused with a slight blush.

"It's no added chore for me as I don't require sleep." I reassured her.

This seemed to surprise and confuse her.

"You don't sleep?" She asked.

"No. I am not like other vampires who require sleep, if and when I sleep it is of my own choice." I explained.

"Oh..." Was her simple reply.

"So would that help?" I asked returning to the original question.

"Y-yes, it would help a lot. Thank you."

Your POV

~Next day~

"I'm back Miss (Y/N)!"

Looking up from the book you had been reading, for leisure rather than research, you saw Cream slipping into your room.

"Cream! Did you have fun visiting your friend?" You asked happily.

As you were currently on an all time high having slept properly for the first time in weeks, and that combined with seeing Cream was the cherry on top.

"Yes I did, my mothers friend was very happy to see us." She beamed.

"Glad to hear it." You smiled.

"Would you like to do more research?"

"Yep, just give me a minute though and I'll meet you in the library."

"Ok!"

Cream then slipped back out of the room and as soon as the door was shut you let out a sigh of relief. Pulling a book from under a pillow you had quickly hidden you thanked Chaos she hadn't seen what you were reading. So before leaving the room you slid the book into a draw in your dresser.

And with that you left the book titled: Ways to Kill Supernatural Beings.
