Chapter 3 : Be Safe
Shadow's pov
When will those crooks learn? I gave a frustrated sigh as I watched the scene in front of me of Fiona chasing some kid down the corridor of the orphanage. I then waited on the roof top with my arms crossed waiting for them to eventually come out of the building. Good thing I actually wore a coat tonight as it's particularly chilly.
A month ago this girls parents had been killed by a vampire and she was taken into care, but there was a big debate as to where she was going to go. So she ended up in this orphanage which teaches children straight away to fear vampires and always wear a silver cross. But neither hunter nor vampire had whispered a word as to why this girl was so widely coveted. Either way I was here under the simple orders to keep an eye on Scourge. He was the usual trouble maker giving all us vampires a bad name. A tip off had informed us that he was going to try and take the girl tonight along with the usual gang of Fiona, Sleuth and Dargo.
Soon enough they came out dashing over the rooftops Scourge carrying the girl. I didn't hesitate to give into the chase. Scourge was at the front, Fiona close behind with Dago and Sleuth bringing up the rear. I attacked Sleuth first I prepared to attack and he only realised my presence a second too late before I whacked him right on the back of the neck knocking him out, he stumbled back a couple of paces before falling off the roof. Unfortunately that wouldn't be nearly enough to kill the bastard.
But Drago was quick to catch on.
"Watch out! It's the trai-
He was cut off by me grabbing him by the scruff of his neck and throwing him off the roof, with a bit of luck he'll be knocked out by the fall and out of my way. As my attention returned to Scourge and Fiona they only ran faster. But after a couple of seconds Fiona ground to a sudden halt and turned to face me bringing out her chain and ball.
"Go on! Get outta here!" she yelled at Scourge.
He didn't need to be told twice.
Fiona got ready standing in a battle stance glaring at me.
"Come on! Give me your best shot!" she yelled.
She then made the first move in attempt to hit me with her ball swinging it at my head. I ducked and easily avoided the attack. The ball went straight over me and made a huge dent on the roof as it collided with the concrete. I took my chance to grab the chain but Fiona quickly caught on and released her grip knowing that I would have most likely pulled her towards me and kicked her, but she wasted time by immediately jumping in the air ready to kick me. I blocked it with both arms in front of my face and took the chance to grab her by the leg and throw against the wall against a higher building.
"Is that good enough for you?" I asked rhetorically.
I then picked up her chain and ball and threw it at her stomach and my ears caught the sound of a couple of ribs cracking. That should keep her down for a few minuets. I couldn't waste any more time on her.
Once again I was quick on Scourge's tail. He soon noticed me though.
"Ah can't you just fuck off traitor?" he asked looking back at me.
Wrong move. When he looked to face where he was going again I had already sped in front of him. I took satisfaction in the quick face he made realising his stupid mistake, right before I punched him in the face. I was satisfied to feel the bones of his nose crack under my fist and hear that sweet 'crunch'. The force of my punch threw off his balance and he ended up falling off the roof.
I wasn't worried about the kid though. If all the rumours about her were true then Scourge shouldn't hesitate to do something decent and use himself as a shield to protect the kid. I heard him give a groan as he collided with the ground, I then made little effort of jumping off the roof and down into the alleyway in which he landed. It was ended so I was blocking his only exit, although if he was desperate enough then he'd easily be able to scale the walls. I looked down at him as he stood up holding the kid close not a scratch on her (F/C) skin.
I took a step towards him but he flicked out a knife and held it to the girls throat.
"Take one more step and dolly's done for." he said giving a smirk thinking he had won.
I didn't waste my breath. He'd just saved the kid from being hurt he wasn't about to go and slit her throat. So using my enhanced speed I kicked a near by rubbish bin at him and he was forced to take the knife away from the girl as he used his free arm to shield himself and then kid. I ran over and slapped the knife out of his hand which fell to the ground with a clatter, then taking his moment of confusion I kicked both of his legs making him fall to the ground. As he fell I snatched the girl from his arms who was still like a lifeless doll. Scourge landed on his chest but before he could get up I stomped down on his back and I heard the snapping of his spine.
"Ahhhh!" he yelled in pain.
"Well at least I won't have to worry about you for a couple of weeks." I said.
"Y-you bastard!" he choked out through his mouth filled with blood.
I had no sympathy for him, he's sick the way he carelessly kidnaps helpless children like prey. With that I turned around and left him there.
Third person's pov
Once out of the alley way the black hedgehog took a second to look at the child under the light of a near by street lamp. She was still however under the influence of Scourge's powers so remained still. The small girl with her blank expression couldn't help but bring painful memories to Shadow as he remembered another young girl who he once knew, who was just as venerable, just as helpless.
Giving a small shake of his head he decided that it would be best to break the seal on her mind after he had returned her home to the orphanage. So quiet ironically he moved with grace but skill like a shadow in the night, taking care not to cross paths with the other vampires he had previously fought. No doubt after tonight the sister would be warned and a law passed to protect the child from any other possible attacks.
Meanwhile a very distraught women was frantically looking around the house for the lost child having discovered her disappearance. Her old worn hair was in a messy pony tail and several strands had fallen out showing just how fast the women had been running around the house. She then eventually made her way to the kitchen but found no relief. She stopped panting for breath and placed her hand up to her head almost crying fearing for the young girl, but her head turned up to the door way leading to another room in the house as she heard gradual foot steps approaching.
She stood in silence waiting for the figure to appear but she felt both fear and relief as she saw a dark black and red hedgehog walk into the room a sleeping child in his arms. With no hesitation the sister went straight to the male taking the child out of his arms.
"Oh (Y/N) my dear child." she said clutching the child close.
She then looked at Shadow her eyes full of appreciation.
"Thank you so much for returning her to me." she said looking lovingly at the child.
Shadow stayed quiet as the sister wondered if he was going to speak or not.
"A small group of vampires attempted to taker her. One of those vampires had the ability to influence emotions and so he placed a seal on her mind but I broke it, she shouldn't remember much of this event. But I dare say you've gathered that she is no normal child." Shadow said in his monotone voice.
"I am well aware of her abilities. That is why I have gone to such extents to protect her, but it seems it was not enough." the sister said sadly.
She took a moment before turning back towards Shadow.
"Thank you ever so much, and I can tell that your vampire." the sister said.
Shadow couldn't help but give a slight look of surprise. He had gone on the assumption that the staff of this orphanage feared vampires and were just teaching the children to follow in their steps.
"Do not fear as we don't fear vampires here but this orphanage has many children who have witnessed vampire attacks, (Y/N) included, so we simply aim to teach them to protect themselves but we do have several members of staff who are vampires who usually patrol the grounds at night but with it being a full moon this precaution was not seen as necessary. But I thank you again for you returning her to us." the sister said looking up at Shadow and giving him a kind smile.
She then looked down at (Y/N) again but when she next looked up Shadow was gone.
Your pov
Your eyes begin to lazily open as you were aware of someone carrying you, scared that it was the green hedgehog you started to kick and throw your arms a little until you heard a soft voice.
"There there (Y/N) it's alright."
You heart screamed in pure joy as you looked upon the sister's tender face as she held you in her warm arms.
"Your safe now." she said smiling.
You gave a sigh out of relief and snuggled into the sister but then you started to recall what had happened you remembered the four vampires but then a fifth figure came into your mind as you remembered the person who you assumed who had brought you home. You can remember being able to move your body again and before you went back to sleep you caught sight of a red and black hedgehog, but the image in your head was blurred as it happened so fast.
"Are the vampires gone?" you asked the sister.
"Yes (Y/N) there gone, but it was a nice, kind vampire that brought you home." the sister said.
"You mean the red and black one?" you asked.
"Yes sweet heart that was him." the sister said glad that you weren't heading to fearing vampires.
The sister then opened the door to the girls bedroom and tucked you under your covers before leaving you to go to sleep.
~The next morning~
You woke up with a start bolting right up straight looking around the room scared that you wold be some where else. But thankfully you were met with the light snores of all the other girls who had not woken up yet. Looking at the clock you had about an hour before it was time to get up but as you were about to lie down you hand brushed against something cold and smooth.
Looking down there on you mattress next to your pillow was your silver cross. 'How!?' you thought as you picked it up. You were sure that it had fallen down the floorboards. But as you inspected the cross on the back of it was a red engraving which spelled two simple words. As you read them you could only assume that it was the good vampire who had left your cross behind.
'Be safe'
