Chapter One: The She-Wolf
Storm
"Sir, we just spotted an unknown wolf at the perimeter. Should we take action?" One of my most trusted officers called me on the phone, asking about the wolf that has been skirting around our land. I hadn't taken any action purely because while the wolf was nosing around, she was female. I could tell that much.
I had only gotten slightly close to her before she bolted. Her coat was reddish with black marks on her left ear, and both of her front feet matched with two black socks. A large splotch of white could be seen in the center of her chest. The only patch of white I could see. There was no doubt that she was beautiful.
Hoping that she would leave on her own, I didn't feel the need to try and engage her. She wasn't doing any harm. Now I had to take action, if my men noticed that I had let her go things wouldn't be good. They would think that I was getting soft. That was not an option.
"No, I will go out, and see what we have first. Then if I need you, I will call." I was planning on telling her to go home, but that wasn't exactly what I got. He replied with a yes sir, and I ended the call.
I walked out toward where she was sighted, but I couldn't find her. Anywhere. Glad she had gone home; I began the trek back to the house. Then I heard something in the brush. Peeking around a tree I finally found her. She was sleeping soundly. Her tail curled around her body, and the tip covered her nose.
Silently I went over to kneel by her. Now at close examination I could see blood matted in her fur, and mud caked all over her body. The blood seemed to be coming from various cuts on her body. I saw that her right front foot was resting at an awkward angle. At another glance, I realized that it was broken.
Moving to pick her up, she was dead weight. I called Officer John and he said that he would be right over to help me. When I asked him to keep it a secret he instantly agreed. I knew by the question in his voice he would ask me about it later.
He arrived quickly and thankfully she was still asleep. She looked malnourished so that didn't surprise me much. That meant that she wouldn't be able to shift until after she got some very needed nutrients. First she would need medical attention for her leg. I would clean her when we got to the medical wing.
We set her down on one of the beds, and I thanked him. John went to go on border control, leaving me to scour the area for a towel and soap. I located both and a bowl to fill with water. Filling it and coating the rag with soap I was beginning to rid her of the dirt covering her fur when she moved. Her head lifted up, eyes seeming blurred from sleep. Then she met my eyes, and flipped.
She leaped off of the table, and turned back on me growling. The limp when she walked was terrible. I knew it had to be painful. But, her teeth were bared in a snarl as she stared me in the eyes.
She was something else. Challenging me with those eyes and her aggressive stance caused the rise of my own wolf. However, I found that it wasn't in a hostile manner, but was still a demanding one. He wanted her to submit to him.
He wouldn't take no for an answer; however, it seemed that she wouldn't either. I held him back, not wanting to cause further damage to her.
"Come here. Right now." Pointedly jabbing a finger toward my feet. I let some of my power leak into my voice. Not as much as an alpha, but second best. The guard was the wolves protecting the alpha so they had to be in top shape.
Her ears dropped to flatten on her head, but she came forward regardless. Happy I had made progress I smiled smugly and waited for her to arrive at my feet. However, when I knelt to pick her up when she was slightly closer she growled in warning. Her teeth showing threateningly.
"Stop." I commanded, thinking that she would do as I said. "Come closer." Snapping harshly, I thought that that would be the only way to make her do what I pleased. It had worked previously.
She walked closer, and I was mentally rewarding myself. It was then I realized that she wasn't walking. She was running at me full speed. That was my last sight besides the floor before she locked her jaws around my forearm.
