Chapter 2: The Trip
Now that two weeks have passed by, I am on my floor packing. I dread the trip ahead and the time I will be there. I pack quite a few books, my iPhone, clothes, and a few other odds and ends. Tomorrow we are leaving. After I finish packing I eat some lunch and then go outside to shoot some hoops.
The next day; We have just eaten breakfast and are now packing the car. The only thing I am excited about is that the people we are visiting live in the woods. I love the outdoors and hope we can go camping in the woods there. That would a little bit make up for not going camping. But it still would not be near as cool as going camping with my best friend. I mean I would be going camping with strangers. I hate meeting new people or strangers.
We all hop in the car and dad starts up the car. We stop at Chloe's so that I can say goodbye. She says a quick goodbye and then runs off to he room to finish packing. When I get in the car I can't help but feel bad for myself. As we pull away who pulls up but Michaela, I guess that is who is going with Chloe. She hops out of the car waves goodbye to her parents and runs inside. The last thing I see is Chloe and Michaela hugging. I feel like I really am being replaced. My heart starts hurting and I try my best not to think about what would happen to me if I was not friends with her. Correction best friends with her. Instead, I think about the long 3 1/2 hour drive we have ahead. And the things to come once we arrive.
Lucky for me we have a DVD player in our car and we watch movies. We drop by Chick-Fil-A. I get a spicy chicken deluxe meal. It is super delicious and I gobble it down really fast. Then we continue watching movies. As I watch the movie, I eat many chips, a chocolate chip cookie, and other snacks. I think I am eating a lot because I am nervous, scared and mad.
After the movie finishes I get on my iPhone and text Chloe, even though I know she will be busy setting up the tent right about now. As this comes to mind sorrow washes over me and questions blur through my mind. And this time I can't get rid of them. What if I come home and Chloe is best friends with Michaela? What if she didn't like me anymore? What if I go back to school and she ignores me? These thoughts and many more thoughts frighten me as I sit there thinking. Dad notices something is wrong and asks, "What's wrong Nat?" He always called me that no matter how much I hate it.
"Nothing," I say trying to hide the fear that stabs at me.
"Ok, but you know if anything is wrong we are here for you and we are concerned when you are."
"Ok dad...thanks," I say although it feels like he is babying me again! I hear dad mumble something, but I can not quite catch what it is. I've never been this mad. Even when I couldn't go to Chloe's birthday party last year or when my brother broke my favorite pocket knife. Yes, I was very angry then, but now the anger is growing so strong I don't know if I can control it. I am angry at dad and mom for making me come. I am angry at Michaela because I feel like she's stealing my best friend. I am angry at Chloe for replacing me and ignoring me. And I am mad at my brother, Sam...well because...I don't know because he just seems to make everything worse and he is just a super annoying brother.
I say very rude things about all of them under my breath, but as I start to say mean things about Chloe I start crying. Soft silent tears fell down my cheek and land on my lap. More thoughts fly through my head but this time about me. How could I be such a bad friend? Chloe can have another friend if she wants. Maybe this trip will somehow show my parents that I have grown up and I am not a baby anymore. I'm 14! Then my brother notices as a tear falls to the floor.
He rudely says, "Natalie's crying, Natalie's crying," and then he starts laughing. It takes all the strength I have to keep myself from slapping him across the face.
My mom turns around and once again treats me like I'm a two-year-old, "ohhhhh honey what's wrong? Is everything alright?"
How stupid is she I'm crying and she is asking if everything is alright? I don't know what to say, but I know ignoring her would not be good. "Ya, mom. Nothing's wrong. I just got something in my eye," I lie.
"Oh sweetie, do you need me to get it out?" She babies me AGAIN.
"No mom I'm fine!" I say a little harsher then I mean.
She turns around and starts talking to dad again and I start another movie. Sam quickly stops laughing and turns his attention to the screen. I sit there watching the movie and trying not to think about anything at all.
At the border, it takes one hour to get through making it a 41/2 hour drive instead of 31/2. I am glad it takes longer, because then we don't get there as soon, but I am really sick of being in the car too. Once we pass the border we get a snack at McDonald's and then we begin the last leg of our journey. Only about 15 more minutes.
17 minutes later we pull into the driveway. And fear shoots up my spine.
