Saving the World

Toothless flew hard and fast toward Berk. His wings ate up the wind, the air sang through his body, granting him speed. He was out of the storm, and he could already hear the roars of captive dragons, though he couldn't see the island yet. Precious minutes ticked by and he drove harder, harder into the wind.

Suddenly, he heard something. Human screaming, not Hiccup, filled with a wild vengeance and accompanied by the clash of metal on metal. The war had begun.

The sky was getting darker, and Toothless used that to cover his entrance into Berk. He ducked behind a stack of barrels and took in the scene. What he saw was complete chaos. Villagers lay dead and dying everywhere, buildings were on fire, and Hiccup-

Toothless gasped. There he is.

Seeing Hiccup hurt so badly in his dream had been horrible, but it felt even worse in the battlefield that Berk had become. He was covered in dried blood and he looked so beaten up that an easy breeze might knock him over. His sight really was gone, it seemed, because he did nothing to defend the island; he just stood there, his breathing tense and uneven. But Toothless did notice that he flinched whenever a Berkian was struck down, even though he couldn't see the battle.

Just as Toothless took a step out of his hiding place toward Hiccup, an unearthly rumble came from Drago's armada, and the Alpha, an enormous Bewilderbeast, rose up out of the water. Dragons everywhere shrieked and wailed as their minds were taken over by the evil creature. Fires that were starting to die off flared back into action as the captive dragons relit the village, sending the villagers into a tizzy.

And then the man himself was there, striding toward Hiccup, his intentions apparent in every step he took. Hiccup heard him coming and stumbled back. Toothless bared his teeth and stalked toward them. This could be his chance to get rid of Drago. If he could get behind him without being noticed, he could go for the throat and have Drago down before he even knew what was happening.

Before he could get there, though, Drago grabbed Hiccup in a choke hold and started talking. "See, Hiccup, this is what happens when the people rebel against the chief. It's also what happens when man goes against nature. Death and destruction everywhere."

"I-I don't . . . understand," Hiccup gasped, and Drago threw him roughly to the ground, using his staff to pin the boy down. "Your so-called 'trained dragon'. It's not natural, what you've done. Now Berk is paying for a mistake that you made."

"You're the reason Toothless is dead!" Hiccup cried out. "You killed off the last of the Night Furies. You killed my friend!"

Wrong, thought Toothless, imagining his parents and newly hatched siblings, even as Drago began kicking Hiccup for his outburst. The Night Furies live on. I promise you that.

"You know," said Drago, glaring down at Hiccup, "I don't think the slaughter this battle is becoming will be enough. I might just have to make an example of one of their own." He grabbed Hiccup by the neck and hauled him upright. "Don't you agree, Hiccup?" His tone was like a blade. Toothless could see what was getting ready to happen. It was now or never, do or die. He ran forward, not caring if he was seen anymore, only knowing that he had to reach Hiccup, protect him.

Drago let go of Hiccup, turned toward the Alpha, and started screaming and throwing his staff around in wide circles. The Alpha approached its master, and at Drago's command, sucked in a big gulp of air, aiming directly at Hiccup. Toothless ran faster, faster. As giant spikes of ice came shooting out of the Bewilderbeast's mouth, Toothless spread his wings and catapulted himself toward Hiccup, shielding him from the blast as much as he could. Ice so thick it was green wrapped around them, dooming both, and the battlefield went silent.

Toothless felt colder than he ever had before. He could see his breath in front of him, and the only reason Hiccup wasn't dead yet was the fact that he was surrounded by Toothless' body heat. Feeling the intense cold sap his strength from him one second at a time, the Night Fury nuzzled his human's face, a final goodbye. But Hiccup was too weak to answer. Toothless felt a stab of helplessness, watching both their lives fading away like this. How was he supposed to defeat Drago and the Alpha now? He couldn't blast his way through two feet of solid ice . . . could he?

When the time comes to protect those you love, you will find a way. Trust yourself.

Toothless found a way.

He sucked in the arctic air, stoking the fire in his belly, breathing deeper and deeper, listening to the Night Furies' signature dive bomb scream as it rose in both pitch and volume, getting louder and higher and louder and higher until finally-

KABOOM!!

The deafening explosion rocked the entire island. Ice flew everywhere and cries of surprise from the humans danced in the air. As the smoke cleared, Toothless made his appearance before the Alpha, glowing plasma blue from nose to tail. He raised his head and roared at the Bewilderbeast, then turned his head to look at Hiccup, who was in equal parts stunned and hopeful, like he wanted to believe it was his best friend standing beside him but he couldn't quite wrap his mind around it. Toothless purred reassuringly, nosing his face, then turned his attention back to the Alpha. With a growl, he leaped up onto one of the ice spikes and roared at the Bewilderbeast, challenging it for the Alphaship. It bellowed back at him, furious.

"What's going on?" Toothless heard Hiccup ask.

"He's challenging the Alpha!" a girl exclaimed.

"Keep our defenses at the ready," said a man's deep voice.

Toothless began firing at the Bewilderbeast. Two shots, three, four. He jumped into the air to avoid one of the creature's massive tusks as it tried to scrape him off of the ice spike and kept on blasting. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the captive dragons shake their heads vigorously and hover in the air. The Alpha's power over them was weakening. Toothless darted back to Hiccup and called for the other dragons. Everyone, come! Come fight with me! Every single one surged forward to join him in the fight.

"Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no! No!" Drago shouted, running toward the Bewilderbeast. "Fight back! Fight him, you worthless creature! Destroy him!" The Bewilderbeast only moaned, as if to say, "Don't get mad at me! You try fighting something that keeps trying to blast your face off!"

Toothless continued to keep the Alpha at bay until Drago was standing on its head, still yelling at it to fight, and he was almost out of firepower. That was okay. He had backup.

"Face it, Drago," one of the villagers shouted. "You've lost! Let this end!"

"Never!" Drago declared. "Come on!" He lifted his staff and the Bewilderbeast charged. Toothless lowered his head and signaled the other dragons to prepare their fire. Then he aimed his last blast at the Alpha.

The other dragons began shooting at the Bewilderbeast's face, a barrage of dragon fire, intense and unrelenting. Someone called for catapults, and huge boulders started flying from Berk's shores at the enemy. Toothless stared down his opponent, waiting for his fire to charge back up.

"FIGHT!!" Drago was still screaming. The Alpha just stood there, absorbing the blows until they stopped. Then it reared up on its hind legs, mouth gaping open, about to freeze Toothless again. But before it could do so, Toothless fired an extra powerful blast at it. Smoke billowed and the Alpha threw his head up, screeching as one of its tusks fell to the ground. The Alpha stumbled back, moaning confusedly. Toothless threw his wings wide and roared his victory to the skies. He sealed the deal with a fierce snort. I am the Alpha now. Get out of here!

The Bewilderbeast bowed its head, defeated and humiliated, then dove into the sea headfirst, disappearing below the waves. As for Drago, hitting the water at that height was like slamming into solid rock from 80 feet up, and Toothless could smell his blood from where he stood. As he turned toward the now cheering Berkians, he allowed himself to feel just the slightest bit happy about it.

The rest of the dragons were landing and Toothless sat beside Hiccup with his tail wrapped loosely around the boy's feet. One of the dragons landed directly in front of him, made eye contact for a moment, then lowered his head in submission before the Alpha. The other dragons followed suit while the Berkians looked on in awe.

I did it, Toothless realized suddenly, the full gravity of the moment hitting him like a ton of bricks. I defeated Drago and the Bewilderbeast, kept Hiccup safe, freed the dragons, just like my father said I would. Even when I thought I couldn't do it, when I thought I could never be strong enough, I still did it.

This really is my destiny.

Sensing that Hiccup was still a tad confused about what was going on, and knowing that he'd recognize his voice, Toothless lifted his head and roared with joy for all the world to hear and know that a Night Fury had become Alpha, and that the dragons of Berk were his to command, and his to defend. Other voices joined in, each declaring their own freedom and undisputed loyalty to the new Alpha.

The girl Toothless had seen in the pond in his dream ran up to Hiccup and threw her arms around him, gently but still fairly exploding with glee. Hiccup tentatively embraced her, not quite sure who it was. His grip firmed a little when she started speaking. "We won! We won!" she kept squealing over and over again.

"Toothless?" Hiccup asked, only half paying attention to her. Toothless came over and purred right next to the boy's ear, so there was no mistaking who the owner of the voice was. Overcome with emotion, Hiccup stepped forward, tears of joy already making trails down his face, and embraced his friend. Toothless' head was so wide, Hiccup couldn't really get his arms around it, but no matter. Boy and dragon were together again, and everything was the way it should be.

Toothless licked Hiccup's cheek, getting a little too close to his eyes. Hiccup jerked away, half smiling, and said, "I appreciate the effort, bud, but you are not licking my eyes."

"Ew," murmured the girl, and Toothless copied a human noise he'd heard before that seemed to mean the same thing. "Rrrrrrmmmmmmm-blech!" Both Hiccup and the girl started laughing uncontrollably. Toothless relished the almost musical sound, unable to remember the last time he'd heard his human laugh like that. It felt good. It felt right.
