The first time I met Zavien, was quite literally the scariest day of my life.
It was very hot and my hair was plastered against my forehead and I wanted to just go home and sleep. My boss was in the corner, making phone calls, gesturing with his hands. I wondered what exactly it was he was doing, what he was talking about.
The little diner was empty, despite turning the sign to open. Normally, one or two would have come in by now but it was quiet and silent. Almost eerie. Not knowing what to do, I switched on the speakers and decided to play music. Making it low enough for my boss to make his phone call in peace.
In the kitchen, Madan was whistling along with the song, he wasn't cooking as well but he had this small smirk. Madan was a six foot one man, with brown hair and sharp green eyes. He had to be one of the most handsome people I have ever met in my life. The door to the diner opened and two women walked in and took a seat. One of them was a dark skinned woman, her hair cropped low and dyed blonde. The other woman had long red hair and was so smiley.
"Hi. May I take your order?"
The blonde woman was barely smiling but she did place an order for two bacon cheeseburgers and two diet coke. I told Madan and watched him pack up the order, he placed the burger on a medium sized plate and then I was heading out with two trays.
Once I had given them their food, I went back to the counter. I was so bored. Bored out of my mind and I just wanted to go home. Eat good food, watch tv and sleep. I didn't want to be here and I didn't even feel like I had energy or even interest in being here.
The clouds had darkened and I found myself wishing I was outside, it would be being under the rain. It has been a while. Lightning flashed and then there was a loud booming sound of thunder. The door was pushed open and three men walked in. They went straight to where my boss was sitting by the window. My brow furrowed as I stared at them. The two girls were still chatting and eating.
"What are you looking at?" Madan asked as he came over to stand by my side.
"That doesn't look right." I said, nodding to the scene in front of me. My boss slides over a piece of paper and I found myself wondering what exactly it was that he was doing with these men. They don't look like nice people. They looked mean and menacing.
"No, it doesn't." Madan replied.
"I wonder what he's doing. They don't look like nice people." I sighed and Madan nudged my shoulder with his.
"Don't worry about them."
"But they're scary people."
"You are protected." Madan said, nudging me again. He's smiling at me and there's this glint in his eyes. I wondered if he was in with my boss and knew what he was doing. Actually, I didn't want to know. I don't want to know.
There was a loud shout from where my boss was and one of the three men stood up, pulled out a gun and my eyes widened. A scream rose up to my throat but I didn't cry out. My hands were shaking, my heart was beating fast. What the fuck should I do? What the fuck was happening?
It felt like my heart was trying to slam right out of my chest and run away.
"This isn't how I conduct my business!" the man with the gun yelled.
My boss quickly got out of his seat and fell to his knees. He was actually crying, I could see how red his face was from here. Madan pulled me behind him and I stayed there, wanting to look away, clench my eyes shut tightly but at the same time I couldn't look away.
The blonde haired woman got up from her seat, the sound so loud that it drags everyone's attention.
"You're making too much noise." The blonde woman said, a droll expression on her face.
One of the men got up from his seat and made his way to the blonde woman, he grabbed her by her neck and I found myself running past Madan. I grabbed the man by his shirt, pulling him away from the woman.
I was panting. I was scared but he was about to hit a lady.
"Who the fuck do you think you are?" the man asked as he pulls out his gun and aimed it at me.
"Please. . . let us just go." I begged, trying my best not to cry. My heart was beating faster. I should have gone home earlier and now I will die here, in this deadbeat diner. Killed by these. . .dangerous men.
Madan was staring at the scene, his brow slightly raised but he was leaning against the counter, looking calm. The red haired woman got up from her seat and headed for the door, pulling it open. It felt like everything went still, time, air, everything. Standing there, at the door was a mountain of a man.
The man at the door was a tall man, dark hair cropped low, and he was in a form fitting all black suit, hand tucked into his pocket and shiny watch wrapped around his wrist. He stepped into the room and I just could not look away.
The man who had pointed the gun at me looked very pale.
"I don't like it when people like to touch my things." the man said, his voice loud, deep and clear as he stepped into the room. "and I hate it when people try to steal what belongs to me." the man said. In the blink of an eye, the blonde woman had grabbed the assailant by his neck. I closed my eyes, not wanting to see what would happen.
I silently prayed I was going to be fine. That I would somehow be told to leave now.
"Boss. . ."
That was Madan's voice. It was so surprising, that my eyes just snapped open. Madan was still leaning against the counter and I was just so confused and tired.
"If you're going to shoot me, please just do it now and get it over with."
Everyone turned to me and I just crumpled to the ground. The boss turns to me and then he turns back to the scene.
"Put them to sleep."
I watched lethargically, as Madan pulled out a gun and shot. All four men crumple to the ground and I just let out the breath that I didn't know I was holding. I was still on the ground as Madan and the girls moved closer to where their boss was seated.
"Clean this up, the cars are outside. We will deal with it when we get home." the man said. If this was another scenario and at another time, I would have focused on how attractive he looked and sounded.
Madan and the two girls grabbed a body, hefting it over their shoulder. Fuck, just how strong were they. Didn't even bat lash. Once they were gone, it was just me and their boss. Everything that had happened seemed like a scene out of a movie.
"C-can I go now?" I asked. I should probably call the police and tell them what had happened.
The boss turns to me, leaning forwards, his elbows resting on his thighs, hands clasped together as he stares at me.
"What is your name?" he asked and my lips parted in shock as I stared at him.
"I am not telling you that."
His eyebrow raised as he stared at me. "Are you wearing contacts?"
"No." I get this question a lot and it shocks people to find out that this was my actual eye color.
"Your eyes are purple."
"I know." I said, still sitting on the ground. The last thing I wanted to do was piss this man off. I didn't know who he was but he exudes power. The way he spoke, the way he walked, how he held himself. If I tell him my name, it would be easier for him to find me. Oh god, I couldn't even report this to the police, he would find me.
"Your name." he ordered and I huffed. Was he expecting another type of reaction from me?
"No. . . "
"Move closer." he said, his words coming out as a command. Before I knew it, I got on my hands and knees and crawled over to where he was. I got on my knees, my butt resting on the back of my feet. There was a tick in his jaw as he stared at me, almost like he was assessing me. The door opens and the blonde woman comes back and picks up the final man, tossing him over her shoulder.
"Were you hurt during the conflict?" he asked and I shook my head. "Use your words." he said, hand on the back of my neck and squeezing. It felt like tingles shoot through my body, I was so caught off guard that I let out a loud gasp at the feeling. When I looked at him, his expression wasn't stoic, but I just couldn't explain what it was.
"No, I wasn't."
"That's good. I apologize for the scare." he said and then he was standing, heading right for the door without looking back. "I'll see you later, Nuri." he said, pulling the door open and stepping out. I gaped at the door.
He already knew my name. Fuck, was he joking? What was his deal? Had he been playing around? Actually, this is not my damn business. I should just quickly get out of here. I quickly rushed over to the employee's room and grabbed my phone and wallet and practically sprinted out.
When I had gotten outside, there was no car, no bus. It was like they had vanished into thin air. I let out a sigh and ran my fingers through my hair, my entire body shaking in what felt almost like relief. I quickly walked over to the bus stop and waited. I didn't have enough money to take a taxi home.
It doesn't take long for the bus. I got on and headed right for the back, resting my head against the window. It was none of my business but I found myself thinking about it. Madan had been working at the diner with me for two months and I actually thought we had been getting closer, like friends. But it turns out he was working for . . . argh! No! Bad Nuri!
It was scary what had happened but I could still remember that man's face. The man in the suit. The boss man. No. I am not going to think about it. I was lied to and deceived for months by someone I thought was a friend and now I am alone and in need of a new job now.
When I got down from the bus, I got stir-fry noodles from the Indonesian place down the street. I lived in an apartment building but on the ground floor. I gave the security man outside a wave as I walked into the building, heading right for my door.
Once I was inside, I placed the food on the table and went to the bathroom, taking off my clothes and pushing them into the hamper. I wonder if I should burn it. Maybe they're the reason for all the bad things that happened.
I took a piss and had a quick shower, hot enough for the bathroom to fog up, like I wanted to scrub the fear I had felt off my skin. I toweled off as I walked to my little drawers, pulling on boxers and a grey shirt. I walked over to the mirror and stared at myself. Taking in my wavy dark hair, purple eyes, bow lips, lithe frame.
I wasn't going to think about it.
I wasn't going to think about him.
I will just move on with life. Just like how I had been doing.
