Chapter 5

Graysen peered out into the water, waiting for her to emerge once again.

Nothing happened.

He sat on the side of the water, refusing to enter to icy trap. There was not a single ripple in the cool water, no sign of the teenager which had just entered its depths. Graysen glanced down at his phone. She had been gone for a minute now. Panic slowly began to invade Graysen as he realized she wasn't coming back up. She committed suicide... because of me. Tears threatened to fall, though he pushed them back, refusing them. He pulled off his shirt, muscles tensing as he sprinted towards the lake, diving into the depths. Sucking in a quick breath of air, Graysen dove beneath the surface, reaching out blindly for the girl. The water seemed empty, barren of who he was searching for.

Unable to stand not breathing anymore, he had to swim to the top. When he reached the surface, he sputtered out, gasping for hair. Unable to hold back, tears began to spill down his face. I killed her. As he knees began to weaken, he lost hope. She's gone. The tall boy dropped to the ground, staring blankly out at the water. Its my fault.... Again.

Silence filled the lake, the only sound was the muffled sobbing of the despairing boy on the sandy side of the body of water. Slowly, a pale figure came into view, floating on the surface of the water face up. Wiping the tears from his eyes, his vision cleared, allowing him to spot her. Leaping off of the ground, he dashed towards the water, ignoring the sting as he submerged himself. Graysen moved his limbs, letting his instincts take over to reach the girl as quickly as possible. When he at last reached her side, he scooped her up in his arms, lifting her above the dark expanse. Her lips were a dark blue, her skin the color of snow on the ground. Heart constraining, the boy swam back to shore with her cradled in his shaky arms.

When they reached the shore seconds later, he dropped her down onto the ground. Positioning her so that she was laying on the ground, he began to pump frantically on her chest, pleading silently for her to wake up. The tears had been replaced with potent fear that the girl in front of him was going to die. Suicide or not, he didn't want to witness a death. Examining her, he still didn't see any signs of life. Clenching his fists into his hands, he began to blow into her mouth, trying desperately to revive someone for the first time. Wet hair hung in front of his eyes as he waited for a response. Slowly, the hope that he had restored, diminished. Feeling empty, he sat still next to her silently. He watched the way her hair curled beneath her, the way the moonlight seemed to capture her beauty.

She will never find out if I do this. Slowly, he reached out a pale hand, brushing away the hair from her eyes. Feeling a tear slip down his cheek, he brushed a hand through her hair, feeling the way it flowed, seemingly flawless. Just as he was about to reach out yet again to trace the line of her freezing jaw, she began to cough. Jumping back in surprise, Graysen watched her in fear. Alex's eyes shot open, bloodshot and dilated as she frantically looked around before finally zoning in on Graysen flushing red next to her.

Her voice was shaky, damaged from the screaming she had done underwater. "What happened?"

Over the next few months, Alex spent her time hanging out with Devan in school and watching for signs of Graysen in the daytime, only to find nothing. Devan would laugh without remorse, without the underlying guilt held in his eyes. No dark jokes were spoken, no hint of hurt when she would tease him, no signs of distrust. Nothing that even resembled Graysen. Devan was truly a different person, a person full of excitement. It seemed that every day he was full of things to laugh about, full of things to brag about.

On the other hand, Alex visited Graysen almost every night, sneaking out of her bedroom as to avoid her parents' watchful eyes. She would slip out the window, heading over to his house. She and Graysen would talk until he disappeared, leaving her kind boyfriend in his wake. Graysen would tell her about his day, occasionally letting a blissful laugh ring out, which was scarce. When he laughed, it was an incredible sound. His vibrant eyes would crinkle with elation and he would laugh fully, seemingly with his whole being.

The door opened wide, revealing the person in front of her in a tank top and sweatpants. He loomed there, watching her. "Alexandra."

Alex nodded at him, "Gray."

His cold eyes seemed to instantly warm at the nickname as he opened the door for her to enter. The sweet scent of cookies wafted through the small house. Frowning at the usual atmosphere, Alex turned to look up at Graysen. He began towards the kitchen, pausing to wave her forwards along with him. Slowly, she followed forward, entering the kitchen. Graysen strolled over to the chair, pulling it away from the table and gesturing for her to sit down in it. Confusion filled the girl as she took the seat, sitting down across from him. In the center of the table sat a plate of cookies, fresh and gooey.

Glancing up at him almost guiltily, Alex reached across the table, taking a cookie from the plate. She bit into it, wincing at the scorching quality. He examined her expression, watching carefully for any distaste. Alex took another hesitant bite, chewing the cooler bit slowly. At the melting taste, her eyes light up. She shoved the whole cookie into her mouth before awkwardly lifting her gaze to spot Graysen staring down at her, a hint of amusement clear on his features. At the awkward twist of the boy's mouth, she got an idea. Reaching across the table for another cookie, she tore off a small piece, launching it right into his slightly open mouth.

When the sweet landed in his mouth, Graysen jerked back startled. After a tense pause between the two, Graysen also grabbed a cookie, tearing off a bigger chunk and tossing it at her forehead. Alex's laugh rang out as she threw yet another piece at the boy which was instantly returned. A small smile slipped over Graysen as he lost himself in the childish game.
