11: Secrets

"A-Andrea?" Heath stammered,"U-uh, we were just leaving."

"Wrong locker room," Poppy said, smiling brightly.

Andrea nodded, eyeing him.

He gladly allowed Poppy to drag him out of the room but they were stopped before they could make their escape.

"Hey, do you either of you know who messed with my bag?" she asked, gesturing towards it,"It was in a state when I found it."

They shook their heads rapidly.

"Oh," she said, her smile drooping,"I see. Well, I'll find out soon, I hope."

Heath felt a twinge of guilt, but ignored it. She'd had drugs in that bag.

"Oh and Heath?" Andrea said,"Um... Brandon said that you wanted to talk to me after school?"

Poppy's head turned so quickly that he was surprised it didn't pop off her neck and roll onto the floor. Her eyes were narrowed and they darted from Heath to Andrea.

"Uh, yeah," he said, nodding,"Tell Brandon thanks." He had almost forgotten to ask Andrea about the house.

She smiled brightly and turned away to put the small bag into her locker.

Poppy raised an eyebrow and as Heath left the corridor, she stayed behind for a few minutes. He wondered what she was doing with Andrea but had enough faith in her not to spy or eavesdrop (was it eavesdropping if he was listening to someone's thoughts?) on her.

When she came out of the locker room however, he couldn't help himself. "Why'd you stay behind?" he asked.

"Private stuff," she said, grinning and winking.

He frowned, unable to find a good response to that.

He couldn't help but theorize about whatever the private thing could be throughout all his lessons. He could barely focus on anything but it, which resulted in his teachers becoming even more frustrated with him.

He was positive he'd been yelled at a minimum of six times in the last three classes. Four of the six times were in Ms. Allen's class who dragged him out of his thoughts by slamming a ruler down on his table and threatening him with detention.

Poppy didn't bring it up at all, frustrating Heath but he knew he'd done the same with her about the reason he and his parents hated supers. So he just didn't bother to ask.

When school came to an end, he was so buried in his thoughts on what the secret was that he almost forgot to meet Andrea. Truth be told, he did forget but Andrea found him just before he left.

"Hello Heath!" she called, beaming,"Over here."

He said goodbye to Poppy who eyed her suspiciously for a moment before leaving. He walked swiftly over to Andrea, who held out her pretty, delicate hand and led him outside, to the back of the school.

"Brandon said it was private," she explained,"If it's really private, I can find somewhere more remote and turn us invisible."

"No, this is fine," he said quickly, disliking the idea of being invisible.

"So, what is it?" she asked, folding her arms.

"Um... I'm just wondering, did you see Caleb or anything on the day he... you know," he said, getting straight to the point.

She shook her head. "No," she said, but her panicking thoughts told a different story.

"Oh. Do you live near or, well, use any abandoned houses?" he asked, feeling as though he may have caught the killer at last. He wasn't sure if it was so great if Andrea was the killer.

She shook her head, her calm expression contrasting her wild thoughts. An image of small house with the white paint peeling off of it flashed through her mind."Is that all?" she asked, her eyes flitting towards the way they'd came while she wrung her fingers.

He nodded. "Thanks," he said, nodding. The corners of his mouth tilted downwards, ever so slightly.

Now he had a lot of evidence pointing towards Andrea. He didn't want her to be the killer. He'd have to check out the house first, to determine whether she'd actually killed his brother. And why did she do it? Was it jealousy of Sarah? She was Caleb's ex after all and if he remembered correctly, he'd dumped her.

He was still contemplating the newfound evidence at dinner time, causing him to eat more slowly. He wished he'd sped up soon enough, when his mother broke into conversation.

"Heath?" she said, smiling over it him.

He nodded once and ever-so slightly.

"Doctor Orsen said they've gotten in the drugs that will help stop using your powers, at last," she continued, her eyes sparkling with joy he hadn't seen in a while,"Isn't that excellent? They'll be sending them over soon."

"I'm thrilled," he snarled, picking up the unfinished dinner and slamming it into the sink. He didn't want to try out those drugs at all. Least of all for his parents.

His father opened his mouth, presumably to tell him to be polite but was interrupted by his wife putting her head in her hands and instead went to comfort her.

Heath forgot quickly about the newfound evidence and spent the rest of the day questioning what he had done to deserve this. Why had the world decided it was fun to pick on him?

Maybe it was because of Caleb. Maybe the world thought it was right to dump all this stuff onto him because he had been so jealous of his older brother.

He wasn't sure how he managed to sleep that night, between his raw fury at the world and his guilt from the jealous thoughts he'd had about his deceased brother.

Thankfully, the next day was a  better one, which he was relieved by.

Poppy was determined to get Heath to show her his powers and smacked him twice on the head with her boot in an attempt 'to beat it out'.

"I can't do it! See! Once off thing!" he insisted, narrowly dodging the wild boot.

"Show me! Show me! Show me!" she said, smacking him in the bum with it, since it was getting hard to hit the head with his constant moving.

"Fine!" he said, his voice verging on a scream,"I'll try!"

"Poppy one, Heath zero," she said, grinning. She pulled a bag out of her pocket and placed it on the ground in front of him. "Now, do your magic, Mr. Heathcliff."

He rolled his eyes and stared intensely at the bag. He tried to use hand gestures to get it move. He sighed, lay back and groaned.

"I give up. See, I told you it was a once off thing!"

"Try again," she said, moving it closer to him,"Maybe you just gotta stop trying so hard? Do, or do not. There is no try."

He groaned and sat up. "It's not the Force, Poppy."

"You never know," she responded, winking.

He took a deep breath and focused on levitating the bag. Once again, nothing happened.

"How'd you do it the first time?" Poppy asked, leaning her head on her hand.

"I was extremely angry," he muttered, glaring at the bag.

"Um... I could beat you up? Or slap you?" she suggested,"Maybe then that would get you angry?"

"No," he said, sighing,"I don't think that'll work."

"Maybe we could ask other supers how they learned how to use their powers?" she said, looking around as if she could pick out the supers.

"No, I don't think that'll wo-" he said, but was interrupted by Poppy slapping him.

"What was that for?" he snapped, rubbing his cheek and glaring at her.

She stared at the unmoving bag, looking disappointed. "It didn't work." Suddenly her face lit up. "I got an idea."

She grabbed the bag and stood up. "You know what's in this bag?" she asked, an evil grin that made Heath uncomfortable etched onto her face.

He shook his head, feeling confused.

"That ring you stole. If it fall out of the bag, everyone will know you stole it," she said, opening the bag while she spoke.

"Wait, wha-?" he started, eyes widening. What if someone realised it was Ms. Allen's missing ring?

"All you have to do," she interrupted,"Is catch it. But you can only do it using your power."

"This is stupid," he said, heart hammering in his chest and eyes narrowed. He went to get up but Poppy dropped the bag.

It seemed to fall in slow motion, contrasting his heartbeat, which sped up. He reached out for it but Poppy had anticipated that and dove at him, pushing his arms behind his back. He didn't bother focusing on trying to lift it with his brain, instead he acted like it was an extra arm to catch the falling object.

He fell to the ground, the impact causing his head to ring. He didn't notice it over the volume of Poppy's victorious laughter.

"Hah!" she yelled,"It worked!"

Heath stared at the floating bag, and let out a breath he hadn't realised he'd been holding.

"Make it spin," she said, plonking down in front of him.

He grinned and did as she said, enjoying the feeling of exercising the ability that had been unused for so long.

"Hey, Heath," she said, pulling locker keys out of her pocket,"Catch!"

He barely caught the keys in time, but managed to make them float into the air as well.

She laughed, clapping her hands together as though she was a entertained toddler. "Ooh, ooh," she said, glancing around before gesturing to a group of loud people,"Make them float towards them."

He narrowed his eyes and made them float slowly towards the group, trying to ignore Poppy's giggling while he focused.

The group stared at the floating locker keys and bag with wide eyes. "The f*ck is that?" a girl asked. The boy next to her didn't reply.

Heath had made the two items move towards him, causing the guy to race off, screaming while the bag and keys followed him.

Poppy laughed loudly, rolling all over the ground and he couldn't help but grin. He made the objects return to him after the guy had gotten into a corner.

They floated around, turning and making clumsy patterns while Poppy threw grass up for him to catch. Soon, however, he began dropping objects and he decided that was enough to carry.

He snorted when he made the bag move towards one of the younger students, who just stared at it, eyes wide.

"Sh*t, you're so mean," Poppy said, smiling while she gasped for breath.

"Not really," he said, becoming defensive,"Just having fun. It's not actually hurting..." He trailed off, dropping the bag, keys and grass to the ground when he saw Andrea and Angelina staring at him.

"What? What is it?" Poppy asked, trying to control her giggles.

"Let's go," he muttered, climbing to his feet.

He hoped neither of them would tell Brandon and Sarah or Ms. Allen (she'd probably tell his parents), but it seemed likely that they would. If they did...

Well he hoped he'd be able to get away before anything got too severe.
