Next Generation
The moment of truth had arrived at last. I explained every surge related event that had happened in the last 9 years. However keeping my ability under wraps for so long meant that there really wasn't a whole lot of information to explain and sift through. By the end of my explanation the doctor looked confused, yet intrigued at the same time.
"That's about it doc" I said finishing my explanation
"... okay Ane I would like to perform a simple test" the doctor said turning to my heart monitor "I would like you to demonstrate surge to me".
"Uh okay, but how do you test something like this?" I inquired tilting my head in confusion.
"Well if what you said is true then your heart rate should accelerate" he stated simply as he pulled out a chart and pencil to take notes.
"Alright doc I'll go grade 2"
"By all means I wish to see the full effects of surge" he said as he turned his attention back to the heart monitor.
I surged as hard as I could, gathering all the energy in my body. I felt the energy quickly spread and then focus just over my muscles. The heart rate monitor spiked immediately from a resting rate of 80 to 196. The doctor's eyes widened and his mouth hung slightly ajar as he observed the the fluctuating lines and variables.
"I-how did-I mean wow" he stammered unable to find the words to describe the spectacle he had just witnessed.
"I'm gonna stop now okay!" I questioned looking for any sign of affirmation. All the doctor could do was nod his head ever so slightly. I stopped and the heart monitor returned to normal readings without any delay. I watched as the doctor snapped out of his trance, shaking his head as if he had just awoken from a long daze.
He then, without hesitation, began rapidly jotting down notes on his clipboard. My aunt and I waited in silence as he swiftly wrote down his notes. It took him a solid 2 minutes before he finally put the clipboard down and looked up at me with an expression I couldn't read.
"Son I need to perform an MRI to get a better look at your brain activity" he said not breaking eye contact.
I grew nervous "Hang on don't you have to schedule that, you can't just through me in an MRI can you?" I questioned growing more uneasy by the second.
"Yes doctor I believe my nephew has been through enough today" my aunt chimed in after remaining quite for the entirety of the experiment.
"Ma'am this boy may have supernatural abilities, and it would be beneficial to research and gather as much information as we can, as soon as we can".
I looked to my aunty, and she sighed giving me a small nod "Doctor if you think I need an MRI then by all means give me an MRI" I said with as much confidence as I could muster, hoping he wouldn't be able to see the fear I was attempting to disguise behind my facade.
"In that case we can begin immediately, please follow me" he said standing up. He lead us out into the main hallway of the west wing of the hospital. We followed him down the stainless, ghostly white hallway until we reached a door labeled MRI. He pulled out a set of keys, and after a moment of fumbling around with the ring, found the proper key and jammed it into the key hole. He gave the the shiny metal piece a quick turn, and pushed open the door rapidly, as if he was rushing to get inside before someone saw.
I entered the room and let me tell you that place was cold. I noticed the giant white plated machine in the middle of the room before anything else. The device looked cold and unwelcoming, but I had to do this. The doctor walked to a table next to the machine and picked up a vest.
"Here this is a lead vest, it will protect your body from excess radiation" he said handing my aunt the vest. As the doctor plopped the vest in her arms, she visibly lurched forward and almost fell over. She helped me put the vest on before I was instructed to lay down on the machine's mattress.
As I laid down the mattress felt ice cold. The mattress was uncomfortable and did nothing to calm my nerves. I could feel surge creep into my veins ever so slightly, ready to activate at a moments notice. The doctor and my aunt disappeared from the small, freezing room before reappearing behind a large sheet of glass that looked out into the MRI room.
The doctor started punching in some keys, appearing completely engrossed with the activity. My aunt on the other hand looked nervous, as she fiddled with her fingers in an attempt to take away some of the tension.
I gave her a reassuring smile before the doctor instructed me to lay back down. I laid back on the freezing block these people called a cushion before closing my eyes. I counted down from ten until the doctor's voice penetrated the room.
"Alright Ane the machine is on please begin surging" he said looking nervous yet excited.
"Okay doctor" I said nervously as I relaxed as much as I could. I accelerated the energy flow as much as possible. My body began to tremble, my hands and legs twitched and began to spasm. My body felt invigorated, and refreshed. The lingering pain in my arm disappeared completely.
"My God... Ane your brain it's... altered" the doctor gasped wide eyed, shock clearly displayed in his expression.
"What do you mean altered!?" I exclaimed. I stopped surging and sat up looking at the doctor looking frightened.
"Your evolved... Jesus we didn't know people could- I mean it's not possible, how could you..." he trailed off looking at something on his monitor.
"Doc what are you talking about?" I asked terrified of his answer.
"Ane your brain has developed small sub sections of your subconscious allowing you to control your subconscious nervous system responses" he stated in awe "Furthermore you can control the electricity in your nervous system, which basically means you can enhance all of your physical abilities".
"What are you saying?" I asked my fear replaced with interest.
"Ane your electrokenetic". he said composing himself "That amber in your eyes is electricity, and your enhanced strength comes from you intensifying the voltage in your nervous system. When you get angry you hormones mixed with adrenaline push you body into overdrive, and allows you to generate and sustain a higher level of nervous system enhancement. This also means that you could..." he trailed off again before spinning on his heels and exiting the room.
He ripped open the door and came to my side in an instant. He then took my arm and yanked it out of the sling in one swift movement.
"OW- wait why doesn't that hurt?" I inquired puzzled at the lack of excruciating pain coursing through my forearm.
"Your body can under go hyper regeneration as a result of you pushing your bodies natural abilities beyond their limit" he said a hint of smile played at his lips.
"I wow-what happens to me now?" I questioned not knowing what to do now that I got the answers I needed.
"Train your abilities, practice control, and do some good" he said looking me dead in the eye.
"What good can I do?" I asked bewildered "Oh I get it I could totally become a super hero and run around in a jump suit with my tighty whitey's pulled over my crotch like all the other generic heroes" I stated sarcastically.
"Well son you've got the name, and you have the power, now all you need is the costume and the motivation" He said smiling.
"Ahem!" we jumped as we looked for the source of the disgruntled noise. Aunty stood at the door way looking, completely, unamused. "I hope your not filling my nephews head with any dangerous ideas" she said raising an eyebrow, glaring at the doctor.
He visibly shrunk back before helping me take my vest off. He cleared me to leave, and after filling out some paper work, allowed me to be on my way home. I went up to my room as soon as I entered the 2 story home. You see my aunty was a widow and therefore was the bread winner of the house. She was independent and had a lot of spunk so instead of a getting a job as a waitress or clerk, she got a job as a medical consultant.
She had a lot of experience under her belt which in turn resulted in a high salary that allowed her to easily support the two of us. I swiftly opened my room, which was located at the end of the hall on the second floor. The dark blue walls greeted me as I stood in the doorway. They reminded me of Kacy's beau- I shook the thought out of my head. A light pink blush tinged my cheeks.
I walked over to my my queen sized bed plopping down on the edge of the mattress. The sheets, and covers were the same deep blue as the walls. I laid down and closed my eyes thinking about everything that happened today.
I nearly ended up killing a kid, I figured out how surge worked, Kacy might be like me, and I recovered from a fractured forearm in just a few hours. I groaned when I heard a buzzing noise from my phone. I had received a message from an unknown number. I opened it and to my surprise it was from Kacy. How did she get my number?
I felt a smile creep it's way onto my face as I read the message.
"Hey Ane it's Kacy I asked your councilor for your number since well you know... Anyways I just thought that I'd check up on you. I know we just meet each other, but from what I can tell I'm your only friend so I've taken it upon myself to ensure your safety. Text me back when you get this!"
"Hey Kacy it's Ane I'm fine thanks for checking on me" I sent the text making the message half assed as I was exhausted. Before I could even put my phone down however I received another message.
"OMG your okay! Thank goodness I was so worried. What happened to you?"
I decided to see if I could get her to admit she could surge. After seeing that relay race I was fairly certain she was like me, but I had to be sure. I didn't need my assumptions to come back and bite me in the butt.
"I don't know I just lost control. I felt so much anger and hate that I just lashed out. I feel weird you know? Like I'm different from everyone else. You know what I mean?"
She responded almost immediately
"Aw it's okay I'm here for you and... I know what it's like to feel different. To feel like there's something about you that separates you from everyone else, and not necessarily in a good way. Oh I'm sorry I got really deep there- look I've got homework to do I'll text you later".
"Alright ttyl" I shot her the message before plugging in my phone charger and placing my phone back on the night stand next to my bed.
I smiled
She may not have known it, but Kacy had just confirmed all my suspicions
to be continued...
Hey guys I hope you enjoyed the new chapter. I know two in one day what are the odds? Anyways this chapter is dedicated to @bookwormsarah as she keeps nagging me about updating this book.
If you could be so kind as to vote and comment I would greatly appreciate it.
Also check out bookwormsarah's stories and one shots. Believe me you won't be disappointed she's almost as good a writer as she is a friend (which is amazing).
What do you guy's think about surge now huh?
Did you expect it to be electrokenisis or something else?
Anyways I'm going to stop taking up your oh so valuable time (note the sarcasm x3 I'm just kidding by the way) and get going. I hope you were entertained peace out
