Chapter 13
One of the soldiers who were out for patrol runs towards us, seemingly scared out of his mind.
Etan and I get up frantically. The soldier shouts. "They're coming! Get out now! Everyone! We are under attack!"
My eyes widen. "We have to run!" Etan turns to the house. In a few seconds, everyone's awake and outside.
Amber is at the front of the group looking around wildly, trying to decide what the right thing to do is. "If we fight them like this we'll lose," She mutters to herself lowly but being close to her I hear it. "Everyone head out! We can't risk a fight like this and we can't all be together, that would just be an easy catch for them. Each one of you has to head in a different direction. No one pairs up. Try to save yourself and if you do we'll meet in the center of Mora in a few days. Go!"
We all start running. I lose sight of everyone as I head in the woods. I've always been a slow runner but I hope I can get out before it's too late.
I did notice though that a few people stayed back with Amber and the other soldiers who had arrived not long before the first. They're going to fight to buy us time to escape I think.
I run for ten minutes before I can't anymore. I have no water. I don't even have anything to shield me from the night air. I'm still wearing the same clothes I wore before the attack last night. My hair is still kind of wet from when I showered earlier tonight and the wind blowing hard makes me feel even colder.
Maybe I should take cover? The sky is cloudy, no stars to be seen, and it seems like it's going to rain and I really need a shelter for the night.
I look around as I breathe heavily searching for somewhere to hide from both the attackers and the rain.
I shiver as the wind blows harder. I find a tree with a big enough hole in its trunk that I can crawl through.
It's full of dirt and insects I've never seen in my life, but it has to do. I sit up, pulling myself in a tight ball. The wind doesn't bother me here but it's still cold. I close my eyes, just for a second. For one little second and then I'll be on full alert.
Before I know it I'm asleep.
It doesn't even seem that long when I hear footsteps outside of my little trunk and my eyes burst open in alarm. I crawl carefully to the opening but try to stay in the shadows.
The footsteps get closer and I hear someone groaning. Soon the figure of a soldier fills my vision. He staggers forward, holding his hip as if in pain. His eyes are half closed and soon they close completely and as his foot hits a rock, he stumbles forward and onto the ground. He doesn't get back up.
I gasp. Should I help him? Is this a trap? Is he one of us or of the enemy? Who cares! He's Human and I should help him.
I get ready to crawl back out of the trunk but then I pause. Is he Human?
I shake my head. He's a living and breathing creature and deserves help! But what if he's on the enemy's side and as soon as he gets better he turns me in?
His breathing slows down and I can see blood dripping out from where he had been holding with his hand. His blood is red. He's Human.
I blow out a breath and get out in the open. The wind immediately blows in my face, making my head hurt.
I walk to the fallen soldier and turn him on his back. His eyes are closed and brows furrowed. I take a look at his injury but the wind keeps blowing my hair in my face and the fallen shivers from the cold.
I immediately understand that I need to find proper shelter. He wouldn't fit in the tree trunk anyway.
I look around, not even knowing where to start looking. Whatever I do, I need to do it fast because his heartbeats are slowing down.
In the distance, I make up the shape of a really small cabin. Now with the sun starting to rise, I can definitely see better. I put one of the soldier's arms around my shoulder and help him stand up. He's dead weight but I manage to get him to the cabin.
I try the door handle but find it locked. I break the window on the door using a rock. I might regret that later but right now I don't care. I stick my hand in and open the lock, pushing the door open. I drag the fallen in and locate the nearest bedroom. I put him on the bed and take off his heavy boots.
Now I can take a look at his injury. I find a pair of scissors and the light switch. Luckily they both work.
I search for any weapons that could be on him before taking off his jacket and cutting open his shirt. The sight of blood almost makes me throw up but I hold it in. I need to help him before doing anything else.
Somehow I manage to find pure alcohol in this small cabin. I'm not really sure what I'm doing. I remember Mother doing it to Father when he came back from a hunting trip, almost bleeding to death. Mother had to tend to his wound herself because calling an ambulance would take so much time, which Father didn't exactly have. I was really young though so I don't remember it well.
I'm the soldier's only hope so I better not mess this up.
I put some alcohol on a cloth and put it on the wound. I've already cleaned the dried blood around it with a washcloth. The soldier thrashes and cries out in pain in his sleep. I definitely earned a few bruises while trying to hold him down. He's too strong for his own good.
It takes longer than I expected to clean the wound completely. When I finally see the gashes running from his stomach to his hip bone the first thing that comes to my mind is: Werewolf. The long gashes seem like claw marks. They're not as deep as I thought they would be from all the blood but he still needs stitches, much to my misfortune.
I either need to stitch him up or I need to find someone to do it. We're probably miles from the closest city and even if I make it in time, or if I'm lucky enough to find someone on the road, there is no guarantee that they're on our side. That means I... need to wake him up to stitch himself up. Yup. No other option.
I shake him a few times and shout at him to wake up but he doesn't. The only response I get is a low groan, almost like a growl.
I sigh. I need to act fast. If I don't do something now he might lose so much blood he would go into a coma or something.
I quickly search the cabin for supplies and it takes longer than I would've wanted to find them. I set everything on the bedside table and get to work.
I've never done this before and I definitely am not a surgeon so this will be hard. I sit next to the fallen soldier and decide on what to do next.
My face pales. Fallen. Thank Sekuum there are no Fallen Angels in Imperium. It'll be funny to call the soldier that though.
I have already found a needle and thread in a first aid kit and all that remains is to use them to stitch him up.
The wound is still bleeding and I'm really scared. What if I make it worse? I wish I knew how to do this.
I take a deep breath to calm myself down but instead, the metallic scent of blood fills my nose and I gag. Maybe I shouldn't have done that.
I notice the rise and fall of his chest has slowed down a little bit and I panic. I'm running out of time.
Well, it's now or never.
I don't know how I made through the whole thing without fainting but as I tie the end of the thread and cut off the excess I squeal at all the blood on my hands. I clean all the blood around the wound as quickly as possible and get him to sit up with his body at a weird angle. I need to dress the wound though so I keep him sitting straight up with one arm while using the other arm to tie the bandages I found in a first-aid kit around him.
When I make sure everything is good, I lay him back down and run to the bathroom.
I hurriedly try to wash the blood off my hands but it doesn't go away, not completely. It still sticks under my fingernails and no matter what I do I can't get it out. I almost start sobbing at that.
I leave the bathroom and set everything back in place before looking for clothes in the closet in the bedroom. I pick the clothes closest to my size and head back to the bathroom.
I take a quick shower, afraid that if I leave the fallen for too long he'll wake up. I dress up after drying myself and put my hair up in a towel to dry. I also find a pair of boots and slip them on. They're a little big but they'll do.
I check up on the fallen and see that he's still sleeping. His breathing has turned back to normal so I sigh in relief. That was a close call.
I go back into the living room and notice the sun has already risen. I yawn. I really need to sleep.
I settle on the couch and slowly close my eyes.
Just for a few minutes.
I don't know how long I sleep but I wake up to a pressure on my throat. I blink a few times before frowning at the person in front of me.
It's the fallen, looking at me with wild, angry eyes. His hands are on my throat as if trying to strangle me. I immediately try to push him off me but he's too strong.
"Who are you and why did you bring me here?" He shouts at me.
I try to answer but all that comes out of my mouth are muffled sounds due to his strong hold on my throat.
I frown at him and point at his hands. He narrows his eyes at me but loosens his hold.
I cough as I take a deep breath before responding. "My name is Evin. I brought you here because you were injured and you just passed out in the middle of the woods." His eyes widen in something I would call recognition and lets go of my throat.
I instantly sit up. "Who are you?"
He frowns and sits beside me on the couch. "You saved me without knowing who I was?"
I raise an eyebrow. "What was I supposed to do? Leave you to die?"
He rolls his eyes. "Adam. My name is Adam," He breathes as if he hasn't heard his name in a long time.
His voice is awfully familiar.
"Is there something to eat in this place?" I shrug. I didn't really check.
He gets up and heads to the kitchen. After opening and closing different cabinets he finally picks something up. "Is this edible?" He shows the package to me.
I get closer and look at the package. It's past its expiration date.
I snatch it from his hand and he waits patiently as I analyze it. In the end, I make up my mind and tear it open, putting a piece of the unrecognizable thing in my mouth. It's supposed to be crackers but it surely doesn't look like it. It tastes ok though, I guess.
I shrug at him. "It's probably fine."
He looks at it and then picks up a piece. He sniffs it, cringing before he sees my raised eyebrows and puts it in his mouth. He doesn't even chew; he just swallows it whole before cringing again. I almost laugh at him.
I shake my head and walk to the couch with the packet in hand. But his voice interrupts my movements.
"We need to go. It's not safe here."
I frown and turn back to look at him. The alarm in his eyes doesn't leave my notice so I nod.
I quickly finish eating the crackers. Then I find a backpack. It's small but it'll do. I fill it with food and two bottles of water. Then I find a jacket and slip it on.
By the time I'm finished the fallen is already showered and dressed in clean clothes and ready to go.
We both head to the door but I turn to him before we could leave the cabin.
I made sure to take some first-aid kit supplies too for when he needs to change his bandages too. I'm sure I took everything we need.
After that we both leave, boots crunching on the broken pieces of glass on the way out.
