chapter five
Bryce was worrying. The walkers were almost bursting out of the church and Cas had disappeared. It was then that the others returned. A large fire engine crashed into the porch of the church, stopping the walkers from ever getting out.
And Bryce suddenly wished Cas was there. Yes he had been gone ten minutes and yes they had known each other for a small amount of time, but he had gotten used to the boy, and now... He hoped he would be okay.
Abraham and the others exited the vehicle, Tara looking around expectantly.
"Where's Cas?" She asked, her hopeful smile dimming. Bryce didn't want to be the one to tell her, but the others were conveniently busy with greeted the rest of the group.
"He saw something, over there and ran." Bryce answered, the expression on her face said it all, Cas was in danger.
"Where is everyone?" Bryce looked up at this question.
"They found Beth, she's in a hospital in Atlanta." Michonne announced, Bryce zoned out after that, he walked to the edge of the woods, looking for Cas.
The group got ready to go, but Bryce didn't like the fact that they were just going to leave Cas out there alone. "We'll come back, but we have to get the rest of the group." Michonne told him, he shook his head.
"We can't leave him!" Cas yelled, Tara came up to him, looking upset.
"Bryce we have to go, we'll come back and look for him, we will." She said, Bryce agreed and got into the fire truck without looking back.

They returned to the church, setting up camp, Beth hadn't made it and they had buried her. It had been two days, with no sign of Cas, and Daryl had taken it upon himself to find him.
He returned four hours later, with a limp body in his arms, Tara ran over to him at once.
"What happened?" Rick asked, cool, collected and commanding as always. Daryl told him what he had gotten from Cas. What Cas had seen was someone who had been following him for a long time, waiting for revenge. Worried that he would hurt the group, Cas had ran, the person following. A chase had resulted in a fight, and Cas had almost been killed, had Daryl not found them. Cas had collapsed from exhaustion minutes later.
"Is he going to be okay?" Tara asked. Daryl nodded.
"Kids tough, been through worse. He'll be fine. Should wake up tomorrow." Daryl told them, he lay Cas down by the fire and sat down beside him.
"Who was following him?" Rick asked. Daryl sighed.
"Some creep from terminus, I took care of him though." He seemed proud of that fact, just like he seemed to have become somewhat protective over Cas, they must have had to fight together, or something else must have happened, a fact Bryce hypothesized to Tara later.
"At least he's safe. I don't care how he got back, as long as he's alive." She responded, before lying down stubbornly. "Get some sleep Bryce." She added. Bryce sighed and lay down, but whatever sleep he could have had, was taken from him when he awoke to screams.
He sat up to see Cas sobbing in Ricks arms, the man trying to calm him down before any walkers came. "Hey, you're okay. You're okay." Rick couldn't say 'safe' he and Cas both knew it wasn't true. Cas began to calm down a bit.
"What happened?" Tara asked Rick, who looked at her, concern on his face.
"Night terror." He replied, before going back to attempting to calm Cas down.
"He doesn't get night terrors, he hasn't since he first left Woodbury and came to our camp." Tara said with a frown. Bryce gave her a comforting smile.
"He'll be okay." He tried. "Although I think he still gets bad dreams. But not that bad." He added. She sighed and buried her head in her hands.
"I've failed as a mother." She cried. He patted her on the back awkwardly.
"I hope you're joking."
"Of course I am, but I did promise to protect him, to look after him, and I've failed." She responded despairing.
Cas had finally calmed down and was asleep, tired out again, Rick stood up and offered Daryl a hand, pulling him up too.
"I'm going to check the perimeter." He explained, they understood his fear. Tara shuffled over to Cas as soon as Rick had disappeared into the darkness. The others had fallen asleep again.
"Hey buddy. I'm here now." She whispered gently, brushing his hair away from his eyes. He didn't respond, although she didn't seem that surprised by it.
It was then Bryce remembered about the cut on Cas' torso, he checked it, but it wasn't infected anymore, although it hadn't healed. Bryce felt a stab of pride. He had helped someone.
"How did he get that?" Tara asked, she seemed not to like that Cas did not tell her everything. Perhaps he used to and that was why.
"Something about a crazy guy he met, who tried to kill him." Bryce answered, remembering the story Cas had told him.
"He was alone too long." She sighed, "he's all I have, my sister and niece killed when Brian attacked the prison, my father before that. He may not be blood, but he is family." Bryce smiled at her, although he was violent and not always friendly, Cas did have some charm and Bryce was curious about him.
"I know he's rude, but he's never had a proper family, he ran away a couple years before the apocolypse and... well he's only sixteen now, imagine how old he was then." She continued, Bryce wasn't sure why she was telling him all of this, but it was clear she needed to get it off her chest, so he listened to her, learning a surprising amount about both Cas and Tara, and finally feeling like he fit in a little bit.
