Beginning Training
He got woken up in the morning by the Blind Man though. Having the nightmares again and being startled awake he shot off a fireball. The Old Man dodged it easily enough, but he was forced to extinguish it before it hit another man - standing in the doorway - in his face.
The other man stepped into the room as if unfazed by what just happened. He came to join The Blind man at his bedside. Trying to shake off sleep he rubbed his eyes and sighed at the two quiet men.
"Okay, since you aren't saying anything I'll ask... Who are you and why are you here?" He mumbled at the man just staring down at him.
"It seems you weren't pulling my leg, Henry. He really does have quite pure magic. It surprises me this kid is a survivor of Lough, are you sure this course is wise?" He asked The Old Man ignoring him completely as if he hadn't said a single word.
"Hey! I'm right here you know and why the hell would you tell him about that? Who is this man?" he asked again getting a bit mad. They were ignoring him, talking about him as if he weren't sitting right there. Most importantly he told the Old Guy that stuff in confidence and he was upset he'd share that information so casually.
"Take it easy, Idiot, it was the only way I could persuade him to come here and to teach you. You wanted to learn didn't you?" The Old Man - who was apparently named Henry - said calmly. Understanding what he was saying, he nodded and sighed.
"Fine, as long as he doesn't tell anyone else about me, then I guess I'll deal with it. So what exactly will you be teaching me?" He asked and the man let out a chuckle. He got the feeling he wasn't going to like this training much, if at all.
"Well, since it seems your mind is broken, we'll have to start with you facing your past. Come with me, your training starts now. By the way, I'm Shin Adams, teacher in martial arts and a former Knight," Shin said as Henry threw him a pair of his pants.
"Pardon me for saying this, but you seem kind of young to be a former Knight. If you don't mind me asking, Sir, why did you quit?" he asked Shin as he got dressed.
"It's a long story, but how about a question for a question? Why haven't you told anyone about Lough? You are the very last survivor after all. Why now, what made you wait so long to speak up?" he asked him in return. Way to deflect the question and that's more than one question back.
"I - I was a kid and I was always looking over my shoulders, afraid that if anyone knew who I was that those corrupt Knights and Guards would come after me and finish the job. As for why now? Well, I'm still scared of that happening, however, I've been getting better at controlling my powers.
On top of that Henry is pushing me to get answers and to get those people put away. I honestly have no intention to join the Knights, but I do want to learn to protect myself and those close to me," He answered honestly. That's when he realized he considered The Old Man and Leo his dear friends.
"Hmm, You have a good heart and I was worried you might be driven by some dark feelings of revenge, but it seems I was wrong. However, your fear of the past is still weighing you down. Fear is an asset in battle, but you cannot let it take control of you or stop you in your tracks. Your throwing that fireball earlier showed me that you cannot control your fear yet.
That is why we'll be starting your training off with meditation and reliving your nightmares. It definitely won't be easy for you, you will relive that night over and over again. Do you still want to continue?" Shin asked him looking really serious.
He hesitated to respond to Shin's question. He knew it was important so he doesn't hurt anyone by accident or otherwise, but could he handle reliving that night over and over? He can already barely sleep and relives it every night. So how exactly is reliving it more going to help him? Still he's willing to give it a try at least.
"I will give it a shot. Though I should warn you, Fire isn't the only element I control. I can use the four basic elements; Fire, Water, Earth, and Air," He said to Shin in response.
"Do not worry about my safety, but thanks for the heads up. The four basic elements, huh? That's pretty impressive. Have you tried using the fifth element, Spirit?" Shin asked him and he shook his head.
Shrugging Shin said that was an idea for another time and had him sit on a large, flat, rock. Following his instructions he took a meditating position and closed his eyes. As he sat there listening to the sounds of the forest around them, he tried to focus on the day of the Massacre. He had to jump right into the memories he'd much rather forget and it wasn't going to be easy going back there.
They had been sitting at the dinner table, his parents, his older sister, and himself. When they heard the screams start they all froze. His father went to the window to look. When he turned to tell them all what was happening they all saw the fear on his face. They knew instantly it was bad. His father then explained what was happening.
Knights and Guards were yanking people from their homes and killing them, then they proceeded to raid the houses and then set them ablaze. It was too late for them to run, so his father told his sister and him to hide. Just as they were doing what he said they heard the sound of the front door being broken down. He heard the clanking of armor and the sounds of a struggle.
A gunshot rang out and he heard his mother scream for them to stop. It was quite for a while after his Mother's screams stopped. Until he heard his sister scream. He wasn't sure if she had been found or if she ran to help their parents. Another gunshot, his sister's screams and cries went silent.
"Lets go, the other knights are bound to see the smoke. We can't be here when they do," a man with a ruggedly deep voice said.
"Yeah, I know. There doesn't seem to be anything worth taking here anyway. Hold on, this picture, I think there is another child here," another man said.
"Forget about it, set the fire. It should kill him even if we don't," The deep voiced man said and then it went silent. Too scared to move at first he staid in hiding. The temperature slowly started to rise as did the smoke. Knowing there was no way out and seeing the flickering light of the fire through the cracks he started to cry and curled into a ball. No one was coming to save him, his family, the whole village was dead.
It was hot, excruciatingly hot and he couldn't breathe either. However, that's when his fire abilities activated. As the flames started to engulf the room they bent and curved around him and took on a dome like shape. At first he was in awe and didn't know what was happening, but eventually realized that he was the cause of it.
With that small amount of hope he got up and made his way out of his burning home. He saw three flaming bodies as he passed the living room and felt more tears fall, but he had to get out, he had to survive. Someday - Someday he will tell everyone what really happened tonight.
Once out he relaxed a little and his fire barrier dissipated. He was tired and exhausted, but the sound of more Knights coming forced him to keep going. He ran into the woods and continued running until his legs gave out and he lost consciousness.
Shin shook him awake and he glanced around confused and lightheaded. He really did get pulled into his past again. Sighing Shin told him he really needed to control his fear. That's when he noticed the scorched grass all around them. Oops.
"What - What happened?" He asked Shin wanting to know exactly what he did.
"A few minutes after you started fire started building up around you. It got stronger and stronger. I had to use my water magic to keep it at bay," he said and he even looked a bit worn down, must have been difficult for him to try and hold it. Sighing he apologized and admitted he wasn't even aware he was doing it. He then asked Shin how he could control himself even while unconscious.
"You have to get used to your past and control your fear, otherwise there is no telling what damage you can cause in your sleep. That's why I brought you all the way out here for this training. Now lets try again," Shin replied.
They tried over and over again. Each and every time his powers went haywire. At some points Shin even said his wind magic made an appearance too. They eventually called it a day and he sighed. He's exhausted and just wasn't getting how he can control his fear, when fear was what he felt back then. When you're sleeping you have no awareness of what your body is doing, so how can he separate his past fear from affecting his physical self?
"I'm exhausted, I never expected this to be so hard. Isn't there any advice you can give me that'll make this easier?" He asked Shin once they got back to Henry's place.
"Hmm, the only thing I can think of to say, that'll be any use to you is probably that you should try viewing things from a different perspective," was all he gave in answer. Of course he asked what he meant by perspective, but Shin refused to elaborate.
They all ate a late lunch and he was glad to relax a little bit. After eating he remembered Leo, excused himself, and headed to their spot. He found the boy asleep under one of the trees with a book at his side. Another thing that caught his attention was the wooden sword at the boys hip. He wondered if the kid had been practicing or if he just wanted to show it to him.
Careful not to wake him he picked the boy and his book up and carried him home. Leo woke up about halfway there and mumbled an apology. He didn't really mind so he told him not to worry about it. Of course he apologized for being so late to meet him and the boy told him not to worry about it.
When they got back to the old church building the head lady that ran it scolded Leo again. He gently put Leo down and handed him his book.
"It's your sister that is coming here to visit. The least you could do is help out with the cleanup and chores. We have to make this place look at least a little bit hospitable and prepare stuff for a decent meal," the woman rambled clearly not even noticing him at all. Rubbing his eyes Leo apologized over and over as she continued rambling about all the things that needed to get done.
"I apologize for keeping him, I'll try to borrow him less often the next couple of days," he said trying to take some of the blame off Leo. After all the boy was out in the woods waiting for him. She waved off his apology and asked if he'd like to come in for a bit. He hesitated, but the kids inside insisted he stay and play some games with them.
After a little while of playing the kids all got back to their chores and he felt a wash of sadness wash over him. He remembered playing many of those same games with his older sister. Lost in thought he hadn't noticed Leo sit next to him. When he did notice the boy he jumped a little in surprise. Leo picking up on his mood asked him what was wrong. He decided to share a little bit of his past with the boy, it was only fair.
"Well, I was just remembering how my older sister and I used to play like that all the time. I lost her and my parents in a fire, mich like you did," he said and Leo looked up at him. "So if you need to talk to someone, I may be able to help you, if only a little," he added and patted the kid's head. Leo made a face and gently swatted his hand away. Laughing he stood from where he was sitting and sighed. He'd better get back home soon.
