Chapter 3

That night, I had this dream. A childhood memory that involved Sofia and me at the beach. During happier times when Sofia and I were on better terms. Back when Calix was still here with us.

It started off with a caramel haired girl with sweet little features holding the hand of a big cyan eyed girl with raven hair. When she was at least three inches taller than me.

We both had matching white ribbons on our hair and white summer dresses on. Sofia had a big smile brimming with enthusiasm as she took my three-year-old self's hand reassuringly.

"Calm down, it's just water, it won't hurt you." She cooed, leading me further within the water whilst I clutched a shell in my left hand.

The water splashed my ankles as I shrieked out of fear. "No! It's cold!" I complained, nearly crushing Sofia's hand.

"Ouch! Don't hurt me! Look, it's alright." She guided me further, dipping her little toe in the water.

"It's so blue." I gasped joyfully at the water, letting it soak my little fingers with no care in the world.

"It is, isn't it?" Sofia mused, treading me carefully through the water. She held me close in a motherly fashion as the water got a little deeper.

"Hey Sofie, mama and papa said feet length only! Come back!" Seven-year-old Calix shouted to us.

"Alright Calix, tell mama and papa we're coming!"

"Don't take long then!" Calix warned. Sofia turned to me.

"Come on Lisslotte, let's go." She said, taking my hand firmly.

My three-year-old self pouted silently. "Aw, I was hoping to stay in the water for a little longer." I glumly whined, slumping my little shoulders.

Sofia's eyes filled with empathy. "We understand the water is fun to go in but papa says when your older, you will get to go a little further."

"But papa always says that," I whined, still not satisfied.

Sofia's doe eyes looked intently into mine. "Aw, don't be like that."

"Tell you what..." Her eyes glimmered. "Someday when I am sixteen and you are thirteen, we could go as far as our hearts desire." Sofia put out her pinkie finger.

"Pinkie promise?"

I reluctantly took out my pinkie.

"Pinkie promise."

Sofia smiled sweetly. "I knew you would." She proceeded to lead me further out the water. "Let's go, Calix's waiting." She said.

I heard the cheery voices and laughter as we walked together to our family. But amidst the childlike laughter, a more stern voice interrupted my dream and gratingly repeated my name.

"Liselotte, wake up."
