Chapter 20

WOOT WOOT well that was a GREAT last chapter right? Hm I wonder how long you guys have waited for this chapter... not really long right? That last chapter seemed like the end lol

Enjoy this trash I like to call writing! Oh right, and P.S I'm really stupid so if I get anything wrong I am sorry

~

Chanyeol looked at the phone in his hand, and he wanted to throw it against the wall or crack it with his own hands and slit Jongdae's throat with the bits.

It was all because of his stupid self, leaving his damn phone for a few moments before it was stolen by the troll: Kim Jongdae.

After all, that was how all this started, that was how he got tangled up in Dara's business, that was how all the lies left his mouth, that was what caused all the tears that Baekhyun shed.

He was angry, so, so angry. But he was also sad. He felt that the sadness would swallow him up like it had done to someone very important to him.

It choked him up, and although he felt like tears were going to surface, they never did. All that was left was the feeling of not being able to do anything, the helplessness, the sorrow, and the knife stabbing pain that throbbed with every one of his heartbeats.

Whenever he saw a glimpse of Baekhyun, he had trouble thinking straight. All that he thought about was of how things might've been different, and it hurt so much.

Earlier that day, he had gotten his phone back from Jongdae when he and Dara threatened to break his camera that they had acquired with quite some difficulty.

So in the end, Dara got 200$ and Chanyeol got his phone back, without even going through the whole bet.

He would've considered this a win, but with the way Jongdae completely ruined everything, getting his phone back wasn't even worth the other shit that happened.

It was the morning of Thursday, and Chanyeol sighed because it was the last day before weekends (they had Friday off). He pulled open his locker and just as it opened, his phone began ringing.

He pulled it out of his pocket and the moment he picked it up, he heard his mom's frantic voice.

"Chanyeol, she needs you."

~

He jumped off the bus and ran into the hospital with heavy steps, panting once he was finally inside.

The nurses recognized him and let him go to the room he's visited more than a dozen times, and before he got into the room, he met with a doctor.

"Chanyeol, this might be the last time that she wakes up..." He explained and Chanyeol nodded, already feeling that terrorizing dread in his stomach. "She might just stay in an unconscious state for another week before she passes on..."

Earlier, Chanyeol had requested that the doctor just told him flat out everything, the facts, and not just beating around the bush.

It just made everything easier.

Chanyeol nodded once more, willing himself not to break down. Not yet. He entered the room and spotted her lying on the bed, feeling his heart stutter.

She was diagnosed with brain cancer months ago, and nothing's been the same. The tumor began to get worse and worse each month that passed, and Chanyeol had once told Junmyeon about this in that classroom. He had cried a lot that day, because the doctors had told him that there wasn't that long of a time left before she would be gone. That day had gotten even worse when everyone had pressured him to tell them what was wrong, but that was the thing, he didn't want them to know. What happened after, with him telling Baekhyun that he had cheated on Dara, was probably what shot straight on the mark of Chanyeol's heart, and he had felt so terrible that day that he didn't even want to breathe anymore.

She now looked so weak, and fragile, and lifeless, and not herself at all. This was the worst he's seen her look, and he knew that only meant one thing.

"Yoora," Chanyeol spoke once he stepped further into the room, stumbling as he got beside her and into the chair. Their parents left the room to talk to the doctor, and they were left in silence.

He grabbed her hand and she turned to him, a small smile on her face.

"Why hello, Chanyeol," she greeted and Chanyeol just felt himself breaking even more that she was still smiling. She turned to look back at the ceiling as she continued talking to Chanyeol about random things.

That was the thing with them, they would never really talk about her condition or about her dying, they just talked about stuff that they did or wanted to do. "I've been sleeping a lot more lately and... It's kind of hard to wake up," she admitted and let out a weak laugh.

Chanyeol just laughed along with her, even if he could feel the tears pricking his eyes. "You're just lazy as usual."

"Excuse me?" She asked, offended- although her tone was far from how she wanted to convey it, instead coming out in a weak state. "I am the most active person that you could meet."

Chanyeol shook his head and tried his best to keep his tears in for her sake, not wanting to let her see him cry. "I am way more active than you, even if I sprained my ankle."

"Oh, right. Mom and dad told me about that, about how you broke your nose like a loser and also somehow sprained your ankle in the process," she stated and Chanyeol faked mad.

"Well, the basketball was thrown on purpose at my face, so I don't think breaking my nose makes me a loser."

She turned to him again and took her hand out of Chanyeol's grasp, patting Chanyeol's head slowly and flattening his hair. "Take care of yourself, okay?"

"Don't say that to me when you should be taking care of yourself," Chanyeol mumbled and her hand dropped out of Chanyeol's hair, going back onto the bed.

"Hey Chanyeol," she called and Chanyeol just nodded at her, indicating that he was listening. "You can cry, if you want to. I won't call you a baby," she reassured and Chanyeol just nodded, his tears still on the brink of escaping. The last time she wakes up...

Every second mattered to him now, and he didn't want to waste it crying.

He didn't want to cry, because if she didn't cry, he wouldn't cry.

"Can I tell you a secret?" She asked and Chanyeol just grabbed her hand again, giving her a smile. She took in a deep breath, as if what she was going to say was physically difficult... And maybe it was, but Chanyeol didn't know. "It's hard to smile all the time."

Her statement slapped Chanyeol in the face, because oh, how he knew what she meant.

Chanyeol nodded his head and the next time he blinked, his vision was cleared of the water. He tried to pretend they weren't there sliding down his cheeks, and he scolded himself for doing exactly what he didn't want to do. "I know it is, so you don't have to pretend," he replied and she laughed, much different than how she usually laughed, it was solemn, and void of emotion.

"Can I tell you another secret?" She questioned and Chanyeol just nodded again. He noticed that her voice wavered and the look on her face was different than what he usually saw. She bit her bottom lip to try to stop it from quivering, and Chanyeol felt like he was ripping apart when he saw the fresh tears in her eyes. "I don't want to die," she whispered, the words disappearing into the air.

More tears slipped down his cheeks and he tried to get them to stop, but he couldn't.

"I don't want you to die either," Chanyeol admitted and looked down, trying to hide his face. He felt her squeeze his hand and he just grabbed her hand with both hands now, not ready to let go...

Honestly, he didn't know if he was ever going to be ready to let go.

"Hey, let it all out, noona's here for you."

Chanyeol chuckled and hiccuped, bringing her hand up and putting it onto his forehead, somehow trying even further to hide his face. "That's gross, considering that it's coming from you who's also crying."

She laughed and god, how can she still laugh when she's the one who's going to die? "I guess we're both there for each other then."

Chanyeol shook his head—more tears. "You're going to leave me, like everyone else."

"Now, who's left you? Tell me their names so I can beat them up."

Byun Baekhyun— "Just everyone. They finally realized how pathetic I am."

"You're not pathetic, Chanyeol. I know you know that, because I know it so well... Who was that dumb boy who saved me from ferrets when I was clearly the older one? And then that boy also became obsessed with the animal that attacked me," she recalled and at the memories, Chanyeol just cried harder. "Look at how well you've grown up..."

"Yoora, don't leave me, p-please," he begged and she laughed- why is she laughing so much?

"I'm tired, Chanyeol... So tired. And I'm going to leave, somewhere far away. Maybe New York, because then I can eat some top quality cheesecake."

"Why?" He asked.

"Why? Well of course... I have to leave if I want to fulfill my dreams."

He could hear that she was getting more tired, and he brought her arm down, putting it back onto the bed. She was now closing her eyes, but he knew she was still awake, at least for now.

"Why would you go and fulfill your dreams when all you're going to do is break my own dreams?" Chanyeol asked and she tsked.

"Yah, don't be so selfish.... What are your dreams, anyways?"

He could tell that he was losing her, and he wanted to yell at her not to fall asleep, at least not for another month. But with the peaceful look on her face, he couldn't even bring himself to raise his voice. He tried to calm his tears before he spoke, because he knew that if he spoke now, he'd be a mess.

"I—My dreams are to become the greatest basketball player in the world, with my sister as a news reporter who always talks about me proudly. My parents would still own their restaurants and work in the same place, except business would be booming because of my fame.  Everyone would know my name, and they'd also know my sister's. My sister would be married to someone charming that she met in University, and I'd have my own lover at my side. Sometimes we'd go out for dinner and just talk about what's going on in ours lives, we'd talk about how... How happy we are a-and about how we'd plan our anniversaries."

"Hmm, that's nice," she hummed and her breathing was evening out. He was now crying nonstop, each sob wracking through his body.

"We'd be the happiest family in the world, and we'd n-never ever leave each other's side for too long."

She mumbled something incoherent and Chanyeol knew only a few seconds were left. "I love you, Yoora," he said quickly but surely, knowing nothing else was true. "I don't think I can go on without you, actually, I know I can't go on without you. I can't do this without you. Please, p-please don't go." He was crying much too loud for his likings, and he was sure his parents could hear him, but he didn't care. All he cared about was how Yoora wasn't replying, how she looked so peaceful but he knew that it was, in fact, the opposite. "I didn't get to do so many things with you, I never got to beat you in the new cake fest this year, I never got to see your first boyfriend, I never got to see you walk down the aisle with your arm around our dad's, I never got to do anything!" All he got was silence and he choked up, not able to say anything else.

He waited, and waited, and waited...

But she didn't wake up. No matter what he did, praying, shaking her lightly, calling her dumb names and insults... She didn't wake up.

He rested his forehead on her arm and just cried for a long time, even after their parents came back into the room, and even after his phone began ringing for a long time.

Before he knew it, he went to sleep, dreaming about Yoora and things that he knew were only dreams that could never come true.

Not anymore.
