Chapter 9

Guys omg I'm free~ that French thing is finally over! Even if I failed miserably, it's over, YAY 😌

~

Baekhyun's heart was beating at an incredible speed, and he was surprised it didn't burst right then and there.

He was keeping count of the score in his head, not bothering to look at the red numbers on the screen, too indulged in playing.

It wasn't hard keeping count of the scores either because it seemed that the two teams had found a rhythm.

The Ravens would get two points, but then KNK would steal them back which in turn would make Baekhyun's team fight for them again and the cycle continued that way until each team had over twenty-five points.

Baekhyun wiped at the sweat on his forehead, chugging down his water that he had brought along with him. He took a seat on the bench and took long, deep breaths, letting his mind wander for just a second.

After having that weird breakdown and having Chanyeol calm him down, he had been a bit antsy the entire first half of the game. But after Xiumin talked to him a bit, he just sucked it up and played like if he didn't, Chanyeol would kill him—which could actually happen because everyone knew how serious their captain was about basketball.

The small player watched his team get more points and lose more points to the other team, wondering when it would stop.

His eyes flicked to the digital clock on the wall and saw that they had fifteen minutes left of this grueling back and forth game.

Although it was tiring and made Baekhyun feel like he'd stress all his hair off, he was still having quite some fun and didn't actually want it to end.

Baekhyun rested on the bench for five more minutes until Chanyeol called for subs, causing Baekhyun to stand up and get back onto the court, passing by Sehun on the way.

10 minutes...

The scores were 34-34, and Baekhyun knew there would be countless overtimes if they didn't kick up their game somehow.

He tried to think of something- anything to somehow get their team up by at least two baskets. He knew for one that Jihun was the best at shooting, getting shots that were almost three-pointers every time.

Maybe if Baekhyun could somehow stop him...

Baekhyun shook his head, knowing it was a very bad idea, because compared to that guy, Baekhyun was this short little stick with googly eyes stuck on with dollar store glue.

He sighed as he ran to the other side, watching Xiumin take up the ball. His hands were itching to touch the ball somehow, but he knew that if he got it he'd fumble or get it stolen in the next minute, regardless of when he got the ball.

Although, it seemed as though Xiumin didn't care because, in the next moment, the ball came flying in Baekhyun's direction.

Baekhyun panicked for a second before he put 'getting the ball' ahead of everything else.

He ducked under one of Youjin's arms when the taller was preoccupied in looking at the ball, continuing on to jump in front of him.

The ball was high over Baekhyun's head but when he jumped and reached for it with his dainty fingers, he managed to grab onto it with the smallest grip.

The moment he landed, he took off as if his life depended on it, dodging the people who got in his way.

Baekhyun faked doing a layup, anticipating getting blocked.

When he did get blocked like he expected, he passed it to Chanyeol who was now free.

Taking that chance, Chanyeol did a layup—a real one this time, getting it in perfectly as usual.

Baekhyun mentally cheered, but he became worried when Chanyeol asked the referee for a few minutes and walked up to Baekhyun with a look he's seen many times.

"Alright Baekhyun, I have an idea."

"That's never good..." Baekhyun muttered but Chanyeol just rolled his eyes.

"You're going to block Jihun and I'll take your check, Youjin or whatever," Chanyeol explained and Baekhyun furrowed his eyebrows.

"But why would we do that? You're taller than me so you can obviously block him better..."

Chanyeol sighed and tried to make this quick, knowing that they had to play very soon. "I hate to admit it but you're faster than me and I have realized that Jihun is much quicker than me. I know this will work so please, take my check."

Baekhyun felt a grin slipping on his face, flipping his imaginary hair. "Alright, if you had to beg then I'll do it."

Chanyeol scoffed but began to smile also, going back over to their side and telling the referee that they can start again.

The game began again except, this time, Baekhyun is placed with someone completely different. Youjin tried blocking him again but Chanyeol stopped him, leaving Baekhyun with Jihun.

Currently, Jihun has the ball and is slowly advancing, his eyes examining every possible outcome of his actions. Baekhyun sort of regretted accepting what Chanyeol had proposed, but it was too late to back away.

Baekhyun clenched and unclenched his fist nervously, waiting for the other to do something.

He saw the quick movement of Jihun's foot before the taller of the two dashes, catching Baekhyun off guard.

Baekhyun barely had a chance to catch up, understanding what Chanyeol meant when he said Jihun was fast.

Baekhyun scantily caught up to him, making sure not to foul yet another person. Baekhyun successfully made him to stop in his tracks, causing Jihun to hold the ball in his hands.

Jihun looked around for someone to pass it to, but every time he tried,  his vision would be blocked by the palm of Baekhyun's hand, the midget trying not to let him get a chance.

Jihun attempted to pass it to someone else but Baekhyun intercepts, taking the ball in his hands.

Without another thought, Baekhyun passed the ball over to Jongin who went down the court in a flash, scoring an easy point.

Baekhyun wanted to yell in joy when he noticed they're four points ahead, exactly what he wanted from the beginning.

If he kept this up, they'd win and advance, one step closer to getting to the finals.

4 minutes left...

Chanyeol called for subs and told Baekhyun to stay on, telling him that he just had to keep playing like how he was.

Baekhyun nodded and took a drink out of his water bottle before getting back into position.

His heart felt like it was going to burst out of his chest when Jihun began with the ball again, standing just behind half line.

All he knew was that he couldn't let them take any more points. No matter what.

Jihun began dribbling the ball past him and Baekhyun tried to follow but someone came up from behind him and screened him, causing him stop in his tracks.

While trying to get past the other guy, he saw Jihun getting ready to shoot.

"Someone block him!" Baekhyun exclaimed and Sehun ran towards Jihun.

Sehun was a few seconds late when Jihun threw the ball into the air, making a perfect rainbow.

The person who had previously screened Baek stopped and Baekhyun watched the ball go in the net, creating a satisfying 'swish' noise.

The players on the bench groaned but even though it was a bad thing, Baekhyun felt amusement rise in him when he heard his teammates.

"Alright, let's take it back!" Baekhyun hollered and to his surprise, no one had any smart remarks and instead they just cheered with him.

... Even if Baekhyun said this, they still had troubles getting points.

There was now one minute left and Baekhyun felt uneasy. If the other team even scored one basket, they'd have to do an overtime and things could get messy.

Baekhyun guarded Jihun as if he were some top criminal, making sure there was not one second where he wasn't touching the other player. Of course, he never pushed or grabbed onto Jihun because it would end up very bad.

Currently, Inseong had the ball and he was looking around for someone to pass it to.

Baekhyun saw the time tick by slowly, 40 seconds left.

"Jihun!" Inseong exclaimed and Baekhyun looked behind him just in case to make sure his check was still there.

The moment he stared at him, Jihun took off. Baekhyun chased after him like a cat to a mouse, never letting himself be more than a half a meter away.

Before he even knew what was happening, his feet fell out from underneath him and he landed on his side, his head slamming onto the ground painfully.

While Baekhyun was groaning on the ground, Jihun was running away with the ball, heading closer to the net every second.

Baekhyun opened his eyes, blinking a few times before his vision focused on the ball leaving Jihun's hands.

The pain was replaced with anxiousness as he watched the ball get closer to the net, feeling everything go slow-mo.

Baekhyun felt so useless on the floor but all he could do at the moment was hold his breath and watch the ball fly in the air. He knew he should get up but his body didn't want to listen to him.

The ball kissed the rim of the net and Baekhyun almost had a heart attack when it spun in circles, doing at least two full circles.

Baekhyun let out a sigh of relief and joy when the ball tipped the other way and began falling on top of the other countless basketball players all waiting underneath the net.

The ball was taken by Sehun and the color haired boy just stood there holding it, waiting for five seconds.

The buzzer sounded and Baekhyun finally found the will to stand up slowly, smiling to himself when he saw all his teammates running to each other and cheering, giving out high fives and compliments.

The small player was tempted to go and laugh in Youjin's face, but he reconsidered it when Chanyeol's boisterous laughter was heard over everyone else's.

Just being with my team is enough...

While laughing, Chanyeol turned and locked eyes with Baekhyun, smiling at him before gesturing for him to join the small circle they made in the middle of the gym.

Baekhyun smiled even wider and began jogging to his friends. Just as he made it to them, his head began to throb again and he fell forwards.

"Woah," Chanyeol said as he caught Baekhyun's arm, pulling him up before he fell on the ground. "Do I always have to catch you when you're falling?" Chanyeol asked and Baekhyun let out a weak laugh. Baekhyun recomposed himself but even then, Chanyeol didn't let go of his arm.

"You're just always conveniently there when I fall. Too bad you weren't there when I fell during the game," he stated and Chanyeol rolled his eyes.

"Well fine then. I'll be there whenever you fall alright?"

"Right. Because that's possible." Now it was Baekhyun's turn to roll his eyes but Chanyeol just looked at him intensely.

"No, I'm serious. Whenever you fall, I'll pick you up or catch you."

Baekhyun grinned at Chanyeol before punching his arm lightly, taking his words as a joke. "You promise?" He asked and Chanyeol nodded.

"I promise."

"You better keep your promise!"

"I will."
