Chapter 30
Luke's POV
Today is the day.
A few more hours and Delilah will be with me.
Months turned to days and days turned to hours. All the days have been crossed off my calendar. I can't believe it's actually here. Soon I'll be able to see her in real life, not just through a screen. I get goosebumps just thinking about it.
"Everything has to be perfect," I tell Calum. He's helping me do some last minute cleaning of my room so it's not a total disaster when Delilah comes.
Calum picks up a shirt from my bedroom floor and throws it in the hamper. "It'll be fine. She'll still like you regardless."
"I know, I just want everything to be fantastic."
"It will be fantastic!"
"What if she doesn't like me anymore?"
Calum laughs. "She's probably thinking the same thing about you. Plus, she wouldn't fly here if she didn't still have feelings for you. I promise everything will be just how you left off."
I run my hands through my hair and take a deep breath. "I really hope so."
Calum tosses a piece of trash at me. "No negative thoughts! Positive thinking!"
I laugh and continue cleaning.
I didn't think I would get this nervous. It's Delilah. She knows me better than anyone. I shouldn't be so nervous. I think it's a mixture of excitement, nerves, and being impatient. I just want her here already. I don't want to wait any longer. The longer I wait, the more anxious I get. Time is ticking, and she's getting closer every second. Soon the distance will be broken and time will no longer matter because she'll be with me.
A few minutes later, I tuck a pair of shoes into my closet, finishing up cleaning. My room is the cleanest it has been since before I left. I had forgotten what color my carpet even was.
"Are we done?" Calum asks, looking around. "Looks pretty good if you ask me."
"Yeah, this is as good as it's gonna get." I check the time on my phone. It's less than two hours until Delilah's flight lands. I'm about 45 minutes from the airport. "Should we soon?"
Calum shrugs. "Sure. There's usually traffic on the way there."
I stress eat some cereal, even though I'm not hungry. I brush my teeth and check my hair nervously in the mirror.
"Are you ready now?" I hear Calum call down the hall. He's been sitting on the couch while I get ready to leave.
"Yeah, just a sec."
I let my parents know that we're leaving. I walk around the house one more time to make sure everything is how I want it. Calum and I decorated a little earlier. We put a "Welcome to Australia" sign (which we had to make because unfortunately that isn't sold anywhere) and some balloons around the house. I want her to feel as comfortable as possible.
I slowly walk out the door, taking one last look around.
"Luke, everything is fine," Calum says, shutting the door.
"Okay, okay. You're right. It's fine. I'm fine. Everything is fine."
Calum laughs and shakes his head. "Are you sure about that?"
I shake my head and shrug. I get into the car and anxiously tap the armrest.
Calum gets into the driver's seat and puts his hand on top of mine to stop the tapping.
"Relax."
I nod and nervously bite my lip.
"First stop is getting flowers," I tell Calum.
"Yep, let's get going," Calum says, starting the car and driving.
Calum looks for a CD he keeps in his car. He made a playlist of songs I don't dislike, don't get nervous from, or have any sort of emotional attachment to. He plays it whenever I'm in the car. He puts it into the CD slot and the familiar songs begin to play.
When we get to the flower shop, I have no idea what to get. The florist asks me what the occasion is.
"My girlfriend is visiting, we're picking her up from the airport," I tell her.
"How sweet! What about some roses?"
I shake my head. I've never liked roses. "I want something that says 'I missed you so much and I'm so happy you're here.' Roses are a sad flower, they're always at funerals."
The florist laughs. "Well, that's quite a lot for flowers to say, now isn't it? What's her favorite color?"
"Wait- She likes daisies. Do you have daisies?"
"Right over there," she says, pointing to a section of the store.
I see daisies in all different colors, and I decide on light pink ones. I think she would like those the best.
The florist wishes us luck and she hopes that Delilah will love the flowers. I feel my cheeks blush as we walk out.
"Loosen your grip on the flowers,"Calum says as we're driving to the airport.
I look down and notice that I'm tightly gripping the flowers. I hadn't even noticed. I can't tell how nervous I actually am at this point. It doesn't seem like this is actually happening, and I feel like I'm in a daze. I barely notice the butterflies in my stomach because I'm overthinking what is going to happen at the airport. It's going to be the first time I've seen Delilah in months, I don't want anything to go wrong. I think about all the possible scenarios as we drive.
Delilah could be different. She could be totally the same. A lot can happen in a few months. I've missed out on so many new memories with her. During her time here, I'll have to make up for those lost moments and make tons of new memories with her.
The planes in the sky start to look larger, which means we're getting close to the airport. I see some runways in the distance and the entrance to some terminals. We're almost there.
"This is actually happening," I whisper. I take a deep breath. "She's gonna be here."
"What terminal is it again?" Calum asks.
"Terminal B. Flight 232." I've had it memorized all week.
Just as Calum and I are walking into the airport, I get a text from Delilah saying that her flight just landed. Her flight is somewhat early. I instantly feel my heart start to race. She is in Australia. She is somewhere close to me. Soon she will be with me. My insides feel like the fizzy bubbles on top of soda.
"She landed!" I tell Calum.
We walk to the exit she'll be coming out of. There's only a few other people around. I wish I could run through the doors right now and go find her. I can't wait much longer. I walk close to the doors so I can be right there when Delilah walks out.
"Meeting someone special?" a man next to me asks. He looks at the flowers suspiciously.
"My girlfriend."
"Is she coming back from a trip?" he asks.
"Uh, she actually lives in America. I haven't seen her for a few months."
"Oh... Uh... Good luck."
"Thanks?"
What do I need luck for? Everyone keeps wishing me luck. It's making me more nervous.
My phone vibrates with another text from Delilah. It says she just got her bags and she's on her way out.
"She's on her way. Oh my God. Does my hair look okay?" I ask Calum frantically.
I can hear my heart pounding in my chest. I really hope no one else can hear it.
"Yes, Luke. Deep breaths." He laughs.
I hold tightly onto the flowers. My hands are getting sweaty from the tight grip, so I wipe them on my pants. I also have a small sign with Delilah's name on it. It's like the signs that are always in movies when drivers pick people up. I've never actually seen someone with one in an airport.
I see a group of people walking towards the door. I try to see Delilah, but I can't find her yet. As the group gets closer, I can make her out. She notices me at the same time I notice her, and she quickens her pace. I feel my heart drop at the sight of her. This is actually happening.
Once she passes the exit line, she lets go of her bags and runs over to me. I quickly hand Calum the sign and flowers.
Delilah doesn't say anything, she hugs me tightly. Relief washes over me the second her arms wrap around me. She doesn't even need to say anything. We both know how we feel about each other. All my doubts are erased.
Delilah is here. I'm holding her in my arms, and I never want to let her go. She's actually here.
"I missed you so much," she says finally, her voice muffled by my shoulder.
I squeeze her tighter. "You have no idea how much I missed you."
I let go of her and finally look at her.
She's smiling softly and looking up at me happily. She's the same Delilah. This is the same girl I left in Maine. I had nothing to be nervous about. All my worries leave, it's just Delilah and me. That's all that matters. She's all that matters.
I smile and hug her again.
"I can't believe this," I mumble. "You're actually here. With me. Us. Together." I'm so overwhelmed that I can't think of anything to say. I'm flooding with happiness and excitement.
Images of what we've done and what we will do play through my mind. I think about our first date, our first kiss, the day we first met. I think about what's to come. There's so many memories to be made the next few months.
I kiss her cheek a couple of times and kiss her lips quickly before her smile breaks it. I forgot how it felt to kiss her. I missed her more than I thought. I want to just keep hugging and kissing her. I don't want to ever stop, like if I do, she'll be gone. I'll wake up from this dream, and she won't really be here.
She holds onto both of my hands and smiles widely. I get butterflies when our fingers intertwine, just like I did the first time. Her familiar hand still fits perfectly in mine. It feels like I never even let go.
"You're actually tan," she says, laughing.
"Your hair is longer," I tell her, tugging at the ends of her hair.
Calum clears his throat.
"Calum!" Delilah says, giving Calum a hug too.
Calum gives the flowers back to me.
"These are for you," I tell Delilah.
"They're beautiful! I love daisies! The sign is cute too," she says, pointing to the sign that Calum is still holding.
"I love you a bunch. Get it. It's a bunch of daisies."
She smiles and holds the daisies close to her. "Have you been waiting to say that?"
"Yes," I tell her, laughing. "I do love you though."
"I love you too," she says, giggling.
I look down into her brown eyes. Those same brown eyes that I first hated. Now I love them, the way they light up when she's happy, like right now. I've been waiting months to be able to look into those eyes again. I feel like this is all a dream, and I should be waking up soon.
The last time I saw her eyes, they were filled with tears. I was leaving her at the airport, which was harder than I imagined it would be. For months, I've been picturing her sad eyes, they were an image I couldn't erase. But now there are no tears, just happiness.
Delilah is here, and everything feels right. I wish I could be this happy all the time.
I squeeze her hand and start walking to the parking lot.
"Wait, your bags!" I say, quickly turning around.
"Got 'em," Calum says, laughing. "Don't worry about me, I got everything."
I take one of the bags from Calum. "At least one of us is fully aware of everything right now. All I care about is you," I say, turning to Delilah.
She blushes and reaches for my free hand.
"Welcome to Australia," I tell her as we take our first steps outside.
She stops walking and wraps her arms around me.
"I feel like I'm finally home."
YAY THEY'RE TOGETHER AT LAST IT'S ONLY TAKEN ME 273859475 MONTHS
