Chapter 32

Luke's POV

Some people are like the ocean. Sometimes near, sometimes far, but you always know it will come back. Delilah is my ocean.

Delilah was far, and even though I sometimes doubted the strength of our relationship, she is here. It's just like the ocean's waves returning to the shore.

I hear Delilah breathing beside me when I wake up. The past few nights she has snuck into my room, or I've snuck into hers. I'm pretty sure my parents know, but they haven't said anything.

I slowly turn to face her. She tucks her head into my chest and pulls me towards her gently.

"Morning," I whisper, pushing some hair out of her face.

She smiles, but doesn't say a word.

The sun is shining through the window blinds, casting shadows across the room. There's lines of light plastered across Delilah's face, and she squeezes her eyes tight the second she opens them.

"What are we doing today?" Delilah says quietly, still keeping her eyes shut. She reaches out blindly for me, nearly poking me in the eye. "Oops," she says, giggling. I reach up and hold onto both of her hands.

"I'm taking you to Luna Park, it's a cool amusement park in the city," I tell her. "We haven't gone on a date here yet, so this will be our first official date in Australia!"

She finally opens her eyes and smiles. "That sounds perfect. When will we leave?"

"Closer to when it gets dark. It's better there at night. There's some surprises."

"Oh? Like what?" she asks, propping herself up on her elbow.

"It wouldn't be a surprise if I told you!"

She lays back down abruptly. "You're always surprising me."

"I know, I like to."

I start to get up from the bed, but she holds tightly to my hands.

"Stay here just a little longer." She tugs me back into bed with her.

"You're lucky you're cute, babe," I tell her, kissing her hand, then her shoulder, and finally her cheek.

"Your morning breath isn't so cute," she says, laughing.

"I take back what I said," I pout, turning away from her.

She reaches for me and pulls me around, squeezing my face in the process. "I'm joking," she says, letting me go and hopping out of bed.

Today is Delilah's third day here. We've been hanging out most of the time, since she's been somewhat jet lagged. We also wanted to just be together, since we've been a part for so long.

Now I can turn into a tour guide and bring her to all the places she needs to see. I'm going to pack as much as possible into the next few months.

I was afraid things would be awkward at first. I thought it might feel like we were strangers again. Everything feels the same as when I left, maybe even better. It seems like I always appreciate people more when I'm away from them for a little. I never truly realize how important they are until they're no longer always with me.

Maybe coming back to Australia wasn't all that bad. By being separated, Delilah and I seem to have grown stronger.

"I'm gonna go shower. See ya soon," she says, leaving my room. "Don't miss me too much."

"I'll try."

I stay in my bed for a few minutes. I can hear Delilah humming and singing quietly in the shower. I get a muffin from the kitchen and head back to my room.

Everything in my life has seemed to fall together the past few months instead of fall apart. Delilah is finally here, and she was the last piece I needed to feel complete. Everything feels the way it should and the way I've always hoped for. I never thought I would find someone who made me happy after Delia. Delilah proved me wrong.

A few minutes later, she walks back into my room. Her hair is wrapped in a towel, and all her makeup is in her hands.

"You have better lighting in your room than mine," she says, laughing. She props up a tiny mirror in front of the window and spreads her makeup on the floor. She takes the towel out of her hair, leaving her hair damp and wavy.

I laugh and sit down behind her, resting my head on her shoulder lightly. I push a muffin towards her.

"Thanks!" she says, eating a piece of the muffin before starting her makeup.

"I like when you, uh, I don't really know what it's called. Never mind. I don't wanna sound stupid," I say, feeling my cheeks heat up.

She stops what she's doing and looks at me in the mirror. "Say it, it's okay!"

"When it's, like, glittery on your cheeks and the tip of your nose. Is that a thing?"

She laughs and nods. "It's called highlight."

"Oh, highlight... I like that. I like how you shine when the sun hits it."

She giggles and crinkles her currently un-highlighted nose. "You're so cute." She goes back to putting on her makeup.

While she's putting on makeup, I get ready and change into jeans and a clean shirt.

"No peeking," I say, mimicking Delilah from the other day.

"I can see you in the corner of my mirror, genius," she says, leaning to the side so I can see my reflection.

I laugh as I put on my shirt.

Delilah stands up off the ground a few minutes later.

"Nice highlight," I tell her, smiling.

"Thanks, I try," she says, flipping her wet hair. "So, how are we getting to the amusement park?"

"Walking."

"Really?! It's that close?" she asks, raising her eyebrows. "You must go there all the time then!"

I laugh. "No, I'm joking, but I appreciate the enthusiasm about walking. It isn't that close. We can take an uber."

"Okay, cool. I can figure out how to drive here at some point. I looked it up, I can drive here. It can't be that hard."

"We can both learn how to drive together," I tell her, laughing.

We leave around 5 o'clock. It takes about 45 minutes to get there, but the drive doesn't feel too long because the driver is so nice.

When he pulls up to the park, Delilah stares out the window.

"That is possibly the creepiest thing I've ever seen," she says, pointing to a sculpture of a giant face that's carved into the entrance.

I laugh as we get out of the car and walk up to the gate.

"I haven't been here for years," I tell her. "We have reservations at 8 o'clock, so we can do whatever you want until then."

"Reservations? Where?" she asks, as we start walking through the park.

"Here."

"What? It's an amusement park?" she says, sounding very confused.

"Yes. I know. You're not afraid of heights, right?"

"No?"

"Okay, good. So, what do you wanna do first?" I ask, avoiding talking about this anymore.

"Luke!"

"Lila."

She rolls her eyes. "I'm not even gonna bother questioning you. You're too good at keeping quiet," she says, laughing.

"Good one," I tell her sarcastically, even though I laugh too.

Delilah chooses to go on the giant slides first. Even when I wasn't extremely tall, I still had a tough time going down the slide. I always seemed to get stuck or go too slow.

"I'm so bad at this," I tell Delilah as we walk up the stairs to get to the top.

She starts laughing. "It's a slide! How are you bad at going down a slide?"

"I don't know, I'm too tall. I barely fit on the sheet they give us, and I always get stuck."

She stops walking and turns around to look at me, still laughing. "You're crazy. We can race to the bottom and see if you're actually bad at going down a slide."

We get to the top, and Delilah looks over at me from her slide.

"Don't get stuck! Ready?" she asks.

I nod.

"Okay, go!"

I watch Delilah start heading down the slide and almost get sidetracked by watching her. I quickly push off, determined not to get stuck on the way down.

Just as I'm going over the first bump, I get stuck. I have to scoot down a few inches and tug the sheet with me. I yell out a few curse words, then realize kids and their parents are surrounding us. I feel my cheeks blush and hear Delilah's laughter ring through the air.

Delilah stands up once she gets to the bottom and looks up at me. There's a huge smile on her face. She waits for me, and I arrive a few seconds after her.

"I heard you get stuck," she says.

"Yeah, so didn't all the mother's with their five year olds."

After that, we play some of the arcade games. I win in basketball because the hoop isn't much taller than me. Delilah picks out a stuffed mouse for the prize.

We go on a rollercoaster, which isn't as fast as I remember. Delilah screams every so often, but it's a quick, quiet scream. With every scream, her grip on my hand gets tighter. It's cute.

I have been thinking about this night for a few weeks. I couldn't wait to bring Delilah here. It's like showing her a piece of my childhood.

This is the last place my parents and I went to as a happy family. I remember the day vividly. We were all so happy. It will always hold so many memories for me.

Today is my first day back here since then. I'm making more happy memories with someone I love.

"It's time to get to the reservations," I tell Delilah when we're done with a few more rides.

She hugs the stuffed mouse close to her. "Alright, lead the way," she says reaching for my hand while still holding the mouse to her chest.

"What do you think we're doing?" I ask her.

She shrugs. "I'm honestly at a loss."

I laugh. "Are you hungry?"

She nods.

"Okay, good."

I walk up to the ferris wheel and stop at the entrance. Delilah nearly walks into me.

"We can go on this after, c'mon," she says.

"The reservation is here."

"What?" She stands on her tiptoes and looks over my shoulder to see more of the ferris wheel. "Wait? We're eating in the ferris wheel car?" she asks.

I nod. "Is that something you'd like to do?"

"Definitely! That's so cool!" She smiles widely and squeezes my hand tightly.

At this ferris wheel, people can reserve a car and have dinner inside. I think it will be really cool to try with Delilah. It will give us a great view of Sydney and be an interesting experience. I made the reservations over a month ago. Hopefully this will be as good as it seems and live up to my expectations. I've never done this before.

We have to wait at the entrance until an empty car reaches the bottom. Delilah places the stuffed mouse on the ground because she's afraid it will fall out of the car.

Once we're in the car, Delilah holds tightly onto my hand. She barely moves.

"Delilah, you can move, don't worry," I tell her.

"What if it rocks too far and everything falls out? Or I fall out?"

I put my arm around her shoulders and pull her closer to me. "I'm right here. It's fine," I reassure her. "Plus, it's like being in a cage. There's no way you can fall out, it's safe."

I have to admit that I'm somewhat nervous too. I haven't been on a ferris wheel for many years. Being much taller makes the car sway more. It is very large though, so there's plenty of room, even though it seemed bigger when I was younger.

After a few minutes, we get comfortable and stop worrying about every movement we make. We order our meals and slowly make our way around the ferris wheel while we wait.

Delilah makes small circles in the palm of my hand while she admires all of Sydney.

"Which do you like more? Maine or Australia?" she asks, turning to look at me.

I shrug. "There's good things about both. I have best friends here and there. I have a parent here and there. Well, they're both here right now. Each place hold different memories, too. It's like my life is split between the two places."

Delilah leans her head on my shoulder. "It's definitely much more pretty here. I love looking out at all the lights reflecting into the water. The accents are nice, too."

"I like your accent. An australian accent isn't anything cool for me."

"I miss you when you're in Australia," she says quietly.

"I know. But you're here now, and that's all that matters."

The waiter brings us our food after some time. Once the ferris wheel starts to turn again, I realize I need something.

"I forgot to ask for tomato sauce!" I say, sighing. "Now I have to wait until we get back to the bottom."

"Toe- MAY- toe," Delilah says laughing.

"Toe- MAH- toe," I tell her.

She laughs again. "Why do you need tomato sauce? You have a hamburger and fries."

"Yeah, exactly."

"Tomato sauce is for pasta."

"Oh, right," I say laughing, "You call it ketchup."

"Oh, I never knew that we call it different things!" She reaches for one of my french fries and takes a bite. "This would be much better with tomato sauce," she says, trying to talk in an Australian accent.

"You sound British," I tell her.

The ferris wheel stops for a few minutes when we get to the top.

"I got spaghetti just so we could do one thing," Delilah says, smiling widely.

"You're kidding," I say, already knowing what she's going to say.

"You know you want to," she says, widening her eyes.

I roll my eyes. "Only because it's with you," I tell her.

Delilah lightly pinches a piece of spaghetti and puts one end in my mouth and the other in hers. The spaghetti breaks before we get too close to one another. I think all of our laughing made it break.

Once Delilah finishes chewing, she quickly kisses me.

"We can pretend it worked," she whispers against my lips. She's still lightly laughing.

Delilah has some sauce on her chin, and I gently wipe it off with my thumb.

I'm looking over a beautiful city with the most beautiful girl. I couldn't ask for a better day with a better person.

When someone brings out the best in you, that's how you know they're someone to keep close. I have never had someone make me feel so happy about myself and life. Knowing that Delilah is mine makes everyday a little better than the last.

I always have something to look forward to, whether it's something as simple as hearing her tell me a story or going out somewhere, like the top of a ferris wheel. Any day spent with her is a good day.

Delilah reaches for both of my hands. "Thanks for being so amazing all the time. I can't believe I'm actually here with you. Today was really great." She says exactly what I'm thinking.

I smile. "No need to thank me."

She hugs my gently, but it slightly rocks the car. Delilah squeezes me tightly, then relaxes.

"That scared me!" she says, not letting go of me.

"I'm right here. I'll always be here."
