Words will never be able to describe the sheer panic one feels when they open their eyes only to realise that they are in a place of unfamiliarity.

For me, this has happened twice.

The first time was a vivid memory from my childhood. I was terrified, to say the least. The last time I was seven. My eyes opened to a bright jarring white light and burnt as they hadn't yet adjusted. There was a searing pain in my left side when I tried to move.

Confused and dazed, all I could do was sit there until help came.

After I settled down and realised I was in no obvious danger, I took in my surroundings and soon realised the bright, white light was the result of a hospital room.

The second time was only hours ago.

The air filled my lungs as if I was breathing for the first time. rushing, like a waterfall bringing life back to my body. Everything was unfamiliar except for the feeling of soft earth beneath my body and the jarringly bright sky that was lit up above me.

Adjusting my position, I sit up further taking in my surroundings. As I attempt to get up, I notice how stiff my joints are as if I had been sleeping for a long amount of time. I brushed this off, simply stretching to bring the movement back to my joints.

As the confusion leaves me, I then feel the fear and panic begin to set in. Shouting from limb to limb and burning throughout me.

This wasn't home.

The hills in the distance were bare, covered in nothing but grass. The sky was a vibrant blue and not a single cloud was visible in the sky. There appeared to be not a single trace of animal or human life. I was not meant to be here, surely. I was meant to be at home with...

I couldn't remember.

Throwing my fist down onto the earth, the fear drains out of me with frustration taking its place. The endless amounts of questions begin to buzz in my mind, similar to the way a swarm of wasps would around their nest.

There was the main one: 'why was I here?'

but several others followed.

Placing my hands on the ground, I push myself up from the ground. Lifting my arms to stretch them, I take in my surroundings from a higher point of view. Much to my dismay, everything was still the same. This dampened my spirits. Somehow I wished that something would happen and I'd wake up in someones arms, only to learn it was just a dream.

I noticed the clothes that I was in were simple, brown shirt and trousers. Shoes fit for running.

I had no clue wether to walk, or wether to stay put however eventually I decided that in the given circumstances a wander around wouldn't hurt me. With every direction being the same, I realise that there is no best way to do this and start moving forwards.

One thing throughout my time walking that struck me as interesting whilst walking was the soil. After all, there are only so many things that I can think about to keep me distracted. The soil was clean, and soft like sand but solid enough to hold me up. It was dry, but covered in a tall thin grass. This was good news, I thought, as that would mean that it had to rain here.

Although I couldn't remember anything about my family or myself, I could recall general imagery and knowledge of Earth. I could not, however, recall a place that held such vast and empty fields. Was I even on Earth?

Pacing my steps, I put one foot in front of the other. After learning that I was in no immediate harm, determination set in. Determination to get out, determination to go home. This was not heaven, this was hell and I had no clue how to get out.

I slow dow, raising my eyes to take in my surroundings again. I hoped that something had changed, that there might be a sign, and fortunately for me I think I was in luck. Although only small and in the distance, in front of me along the horizon line sat a tree. I couldn't make out anything more apart from the fact that the tree lacked leaves. I take a deep breath and continue on my journey forward.

Thirst began to set in, as the sun blazed over my head. As if one bad thing lead to  another the soil looked like it hadn't been rained on for days, maybe even weeks. If this was an experiment it sure was a sick one. This was torture.

The sun remained above me. I had no sense of time, but I knew that the sun would have had to moved a little bit in my time in this place. How I longed for night time, the darkness and the fresh air. My family, my home and a glass of water.

The best I could do was keep moving forward,  the tree was my only hope and I had every intention of reaching it.
