Fire In The Dark
"Are you gay?"
A girl with brown hair and a frilly pink dress walked up to me with Carlos trailing close behind her. He quickly mouthed an apology to me, and I turned to her.
"No, I am not gay. Not that it's any of your business Miss...?"
Her face lit up in realization. "Oh, my name is Audrey, I'm the daughter of Aurora." She flashed me a smile made up of all of her perfect, straight, white, teeth. That smile gave me more goosebumps than the Cheshire Cat.
Of course she's Aurora's daughter. That's probably why she's hitting on me and not Hayden. I sighed and looked at Carlos again. He shrugged and mouthed another apology to me.
"Yeah, I'm Max. And I'm also leaving." I started to walk away, in the direction of where Hayden went, and Audrey grabbed my arm.
My eyes flashed yellow as a huge rush of her fears and secrets ran through my mind at the contact. I yanked my arm from her grip and closed my eyes.
"Where do you think you're going handsome?"
My jaw clenched. "I have a class to get to."
She giggled. It was a sound I never wanted to hear again in this life or any other. "School is out silly. Why don't we go catch a movie together? There's a new one out about this old Shakespeare play, and I've been dying to see it!"
I was this close to fusing her jaw shut forever. I sent Carlos my best "Is she kidding?" look. She was smiling again, as she got a little too close, invading my personal space. I could smell her perfume now, which was like the most toxic smelling flower that existed. The thought that anyone would find this enticing almost made me gag.
Just when I thought I would be trapped going on a date with this bitch, I felt a familiar pair of arms wrap around my waist, and a head rest on my shoulder. About fucking time. Audrey looked like she was about to punch him.
He smiled at her, mocking that sweet smile she gave me earlier. "Hi, I'm Hayden. If you don't mind me asking, why are you hitting on my boyfriend?"
It took her a second, but her face contorted in disgust when she realized that he wasn't kidding. Then she looked at me. "You told me you weren't gay!"
I sent her an evil smirk and leaned into Hayden. "It just so happens that the both of us are bisexual. We just happen to be in a gay relationship." I smiled as Hayden gently kissed my shoulder.
She started yelling. "You freaks! You were leading me on you... you... YOU FAGGOT!!!"
Hayden's arms went slack around me, and I walked up to her personal space. There were a few princes around, who would gladly defend their princess, but they held back at the murderous looks in mine and Hayden's eyes.
The VK's came out, and Carlos explained what happened. They all stood behind me with Hayden.
"Do you know what happened to the last person who said that on the Isle?" One particular prince got really close to Audrey. "Their screams were heard here. So I suggest you take it back before you get hurt."
The prince spoke up. "Are you threatening my girlfriend?"
I looked at him hard, and my eyes started glowing bright yellow. Hayden came up behind me. "You'll know when I make threats. This was a promise."
"You can't threaten me you faggot!" Audrey started to get confident.
I tried to move forward, but Hayden grabbed my arm.
The prince smirked at Hayden. "That's right, hold back your bitch."
That did it. Hayden's eyes started glowing yellow too, and he let go of me and backed away. I stared at the prince. "What's your name?"
"Chad. Son of Cinderella. Why? Are you gonna rat me out to Fairy Godmother?"
I pulled out a Cheshire cat grin, and let out a bone-chilling laugh. "No, I just want to make sure that your gravestone is marked with the right name: Bigoted Asshole Who Doesn't Know How To Keep His Mouth Shut. Right next to Little Miss Bitch."
"Are you threatening to kill us?"
"Oh no, you see, I happen to be on good standing with the Lord of the Underworld, and I know just the place for you two."
"THAT'S ENOUGH!!!" A loud voice echoed through the courtyard. "You cannot just come here and threaten my students." It was Fairy Godmother.
Lonnie decided to step in, which surprised me. "But they were both using very offensive slurs, the action was justified! He didn't do anything!"
"Oh really? Audrey, dear, what did you say?" She looked to Audrey, who put on her best innocent face.
"I told Max to stop hitting on me because I have a boyfriend, but he wouldn't stop. I called him a Jerkface, and he started threatening me and Chad!"
"THAT'S NOT WHAT HAPPENED!!!" All of the people on my side yelled out. I stared at Fairy Godmother, knowing that she wouldn't believe me, or any of the others.
Carlos walked up to Fairy Godmother and explained what happened. She looked shocked and asked Audrey and Chad if it was true, which they denied.
"I'm afraid that I'm going to have to believe my best students. They have never told a lie in the entire time that I've known them. Max-"
I held up my hand. "I know exactly what's going to happen. You're going to send me back to the Isle. I have no problems there. I was happier there than I will ever be here."
Hayden started to protest, but FG held up her hand. He stopped talking, but he sent me a pleading look.
"Are you going to go with me, Hayden?"
He moved forward, but FG held him back. "You will not drag the other students down with you. Based on what I've heard-"
"Based on what you've heard, you should be expelling Audrey and Chad. But, like all of you here, you're just as bigoted as they are. People shouldn't degrade me just because I'm with Hayden. They shouldn't degrade anyone for that. It doesn't matter who we like, as long as we don't hurt anyone."
I lifted my sleeve and showed everyone my self-harm scars. Hayden looked at me with shock written all over his face. He didn't know that I had kept this up. I turned to Audrey and Chad. "This is what happens to people when you talk about them like that. Each one is for a time some asshole called me a faggot, or a freak, or told me that I was unnatural or told me that I shouldn't be alive, or even explicitly told me to kill myself."
I turned to Fairy Godmother. "If I stay, I know that that's going to happen because all of you are scared of anything that hasn't been put into all of your fairy tales. Anything that isn't 'normal' or anything that you find disgusting. You're going to believe the people that you've known for so long because that's what you've been told to do. Despite so many people telling you what they did, you believed them. They have been harassing all of us here, along with anyone that came out as anything but straight. You people call us evil, but at least we hate each other for things we have control over, and not something we were born with."
I looked at Hayden, who was pleading with me not to go, but I had to. Being here was sucking the life out of me. If I stayed any longer... I didn't want to think about it. I looked at the few friends I had made here. Lonnie, Doug, and Jane. They all didn't want me to go. I sent them an apologetic look, then turned to Audrey and Chad.
"I'm going to make sure that the both of you rot in the most horrible part of the underworld. Now, If you'll excuse me, I have some trouble to stir up on the Isle."
I took a deep bow, and jumped into my own shadow, disappearing from Auradon.
When I landed, I wasn't on the Isle. I was in a large cavern with a bunch of empty cages. There was a weird globe on the ground, and a lot of shadows all over the place because of the way the walls were. I looked around for a while, looking for anything that might give me a clue as to where I was.
I heard a voice and melted into a shadow. "Who dares to disturb me in my exile! Who dares to face the boogeyman!"
I calmed when I realized who it was, and walked out of the shadow. He saw me, and also calmed down. "Hey dad, I think it's past time for a reunion."
