Chapter One

"Help!" A girl screams while desperately trying to swim to land.

The girl safely makes it to land, but there's still hundreds of kids left, some drowning, some trying to swim to land, and all she can do is watch, not wanting to risk her life.

"Help!" A boy yells, not that far from land, so she helps him out.

The boy is short, with a bowl hair cut. He has brown eyes and hair.

"Thanks a lot, my name's Flute, what's yours?" He says smiling.

"I'm Layla, nice to meet you Flute."

While Layla's helping Flute dry off, another boy approaches them.

"Hey, I'm Simon." A boy who seems to be about their age announces. This boy gives off "a leader" aura.

"Hey Simon, we'll need all the help we can get., I'm Layla," Layla says, helping Flute to his feet.

"Come on, we should start moving, I'll explain more on the way for of what I know."

"But-" but before she can say anything, she's being dragged by Simon, and Flute behind them.

"Where are we going anyways?" Pipes in Flute.

"Here." Simon lets go of Layla's hand and moves some trees aside to uncover a highway.

"What are we gonna do..." Flute asks scared.

"We're gonna jump into someone's truck."

"No, no we're not."

"Yes. We. Are. Right Layla?"

"Um..." Layla looks at Simon then back at the forest behind them, "Shouldn't we help the others who were on the plane?"

"We don't have time Layla! Look, a pickup truck's approaching, ready?"

"Wait!" Someone else interferes, "Wait!" It's a girl, she's dark skinned and round, and she's running over towards the trio.

"Wait! My name's Jay, and I want you to take me with you, me and my new friend too of course."

"Sure Jay, nice to meet you, who's your friend?" Simon asks.

"Wait here." She goes and runs off, and a few minutes later she comes back with a guy with unkept black hair, and also very cute.

"I'm Lyon," He says with a smile.

"Hey Lyon, now we better get moving quick, before we miss another chance." Everyone nods, and when they see the next pickup truck coming in, they all get ready to jump.

First it's Simon, then Jay, then Lyon, then Layla, and now it's Flute's turn. He's running along the highway, and everyone's shouting at him. He attempts to jump, but it's too late, and he jumps in front of the car behind the truck and is run over.

"Flute!" Layla yells.

Everyone's there in shock, but Simon tries to cheer them up, "Don't worry guys, we won't die, we have each other, right?"

Jay kinda nods and tries to smile at him reassuringly, but Lyon is still shocked, and Layla's trying to hold back tears.

"Now I think I have to explain something." Simon says changing his tone to serious.

"Sure, what is it?" Jay asks.

"Well the airplane crash first of all. I don't know much, but we all know that this was supposed to be a "special field trip" right? That some "special people" from different schools get to go somewhere "special"." Everyone nods.

Lyon speaks up, "Yeah I wondered about that, there's nothing really special about me, my grades were particularly bad, and I didn't do anything great really."

"Exactly. My hunch is that we're all test subjects, going to a remote island." Everyone gasps.

Layla says, "Well how can you just assume that?"

"No. I know that's what it is, have any of you read the pamphlet they gave us?" Everyone shakes their head no, "Well that pamphlet said, 'Welcome to Test Island' isn't that reason enough? It also said a lot more than that, it was very specific, if I remember correctly, it said, 'You will all have a lot of fun! You will face a series of obstacles, and you'll have to get past them, can you complete the missions and reach the end? And no getting help! Confront an adult and you will be eliminated, thank you for your time!' So I think there's a goal we have to reach, and if we try to contact anyone other than who was in the flight, then we'll die, simple as that. But the problem is that we don't know our destination."

Once Simon finishes, everyone is shaken, Layla starts sobbing, Jay looks like she's seen a ghost, and Lyon is still trying to process all of this. Simon's trying to comfort Layla, and Lyon speaks up,

"So all we have to do is get to Test Island, right?"

"What?"

"The destination must be that, completing all the tasks, and then we'll head to Test Island, to 'claim our reward' or whatever bull they put up."

"Yeah... yeah I think he's onto something," Jay starts, "But what would the obstacles be?"

Layla, now done sobbing, tries to say, "It's probably to survive, we don't know where we are, for all we know we could be in Asia."

"You're right, but where is Test Island?" Lyon asks.

"It's near Hawaii," Layla answers.

"So then our next mission is to get a map!" Simon announces, which seems to lighten everyone up, knowing that they have a goal.

***

After Simon announced their goal, they all decided to take a nap, while one stays awake for an hour to keep watch.

It's night now, and it's Simon's turn to watch, when the pickup truck finally takes an exit.

He wakes everyone up, and tells them they need to jump off, and so they do, Lyon, then Jay, then Layla, then Simon.

They jumped off at an empty picnic area.

"Lets all rest for a bit here, it looks like no one will find us here, and we'll go exploring in the morning." Simon says.

After a bit of silence, Simon says, "Maybe we should introduce ourselves." And everyone nods.

"I'll go first, my name is Simon, and I went to Vincent Academy in New Jersey, I'm a freshman and I'm 14."

"Vincent Academy? You mean the Vincent Academy, man I'd have to sell a kidney to get in there," says Jay.

"Vincent Academy, isn't that a rich kids school?" Asks Layla.

"Yeah I guess, well moving on, what about you Lyon?"

Lyon grins and says imitating a rich kid, "I'm Lyon the Lost, and I come from Franklin Public School and I am but a lowly eighth grader, who is also just 14."

"Ha ha, very funny, what about you Jay?"

She smiles, "I'm Jay, as you all know, and I also go to Franklin Public School, also an eighth grader, and also 14."

"Oh so you guys were friends even before the crash?" Layla asks.

"No not really, we're just classmates, we never really talked since Lyon was the troublemaker, popular kid, who has nothing more than his looks."

"And what about you Layla?"

"Well, I'm Layla, and I go to Lincoln Public School, I'm also an eighth grader and I'm 14."

"Sweet, so we're all the same age!" Lyon grins.

"Yeah I guess you're right," says Jay.

"Well we should probably go to sleep now," Simon says.

Everyone nods, and they each take a picnic table to lie on its bench, looking up at the glistening stars, as they drift off to sleep.
