Chapter One
I can't believe I got in! Thought Kayla as she stood outside the entrance, it shined under the double moons on Jigu. This Academy is one of the most respected institutions and only the children of the most rich and powerful are accepted.
She moved back some strands of the unruly, curly chestnut hair she had courtesy of her father and started to read the plaque that was written in Ah'Tarian, "Home to the Galaxy's Most Skilled. Where We Shape Their Minds and Powers for the Benefit of All."
Pfft, skilled my ass. The students are nothing but a bunch of spoiled rich kids. They only got in because of who they are not because of what they know.
Kayla stood at the entrance to another world, one that only 'The Academy' could give her. She is one of the first to be accepted from Nah'Bye but knew she wouldn't be the last to be admitted.
Kayla was different from the typical Nah'Byian, she was a one-third Rayian. While she was a half-breed to most, Kayla felt she was lucky to have been born with some of the traits of her deceased mother. Because of her abilities, the Nah'Bye and its people would finally capture the attention of the galaxy showing that power wasn't everything.
Kayla opened the door and walked into the main office; even at this hour it was still open and staff was waiting to assist new students. As she walked into the room and looked around she grew nervous for the first time and wondered how she would be seen. She wished she stood taller than her 5 feet 5 inches, which was considered to be the lower end of a Nah'Byian woman. She had been raised on a peaceful planet that prided itself on its lack of interactions with the rest of the Alliance. The Alliance held under the supreme control of the Ah'Tarians but to be more exact under the Dragonist Clan.
Kayla stopped looking around to stare at what could only be considered a medical wonder, she had one of the most beautiful faces that she'd ever seen, straight vivid red hair with chunks of wheat colored gold, a clear cream like complexion and green eyes that shined like emeralds. She walked forward and forced a smile.
-------
Orchid Sinclair looked up as the small chimes to the office sounded. As they continued to go off she frowned thinking about how much she hated those god awful bells that the president had installed.
She watched with a mixture of disgust, curiosity and disdain as the girl at the door stared around, not believing what she was seeing. A Nah'Byian was standing there looking around, she gazed at her not sure what to think. It was her first time seeing one in the flesh. The Nah'Bye prided themselves on not interacting with off worlders unless necessary. In the vids she saw the females usually had varying shades of brown skin tones from café au lait to dark chocolate, with varying shades of brown, black, red or chestnut colored hair, vivid brown eyes and bodies that were on the ridiculously pudgy side; even though her cousins assured her the pudge was in the right spots.
Clicking her tongue she looked at this Nah'Byian who was wearing The Academy's one piece jumpsuit as if it were an extra skin in bafflement. She knew that was the biggest male size for a freshman they had and she was wearing it like a glove. The suit looked like it would come apart at the seams around her full breasts and hips. The only part that didn't look like it would burst open was around her flat stomach.
Ah'Tarians women prided themselves on their willowy build and the thought of having to wear one of the larger size jumpsuits was a humiliation that would send a woman running to the Rayian plastic surgeons. All the other races followed suit making sure that the women all met the Ah'Tarian standard of beauty. Small frames with breasts that were no larger than a full B, small waist and hips that only had a slight rounding to them. Ah'Tarian women were slim and this female wasn't svelte, she was shaped like one of those old hourglasses the President had on his mantle.
Orchid hated this new arrival immediately. She took in the girl's long hair with light brown and golden red highlights as well as her obvious lack of make-up. She narrowed her eyes at the girl before her spoke. "You must be the new freshman that I've heard so much about. A prodigy from that planet full of unsociable, abilities lacking, back water draikens." She said sarcastically.
She walked forward and forced a smile. "Good evening, my name is Makayla Aubree Ward." She reached into her duffle bag and pulled out her letter of admission and her identification card. "I understand I am to present this so that I can be given my room assignment, class schedule, list of potential activities." She slammed the items on the desk which caused the woman to flinch back. "And I also need my school ID."
Orchid clicked her tongue again as she looked at the girl in front of her and rolled her eyes. Taking the last sealed envelope out of the desk drawer she threw it onto the desk. She watched in amusement as the other girl's brown eyes flashed in anger, but felt a little fear as she saw the golden flames that flashed behind the brown. The act of eye color changes meant a person had above average powers. After a stare down with the worthless bitch Orchid looked away and picked the packet back up.
"Here!" She held it out to Kayla, she couldn't believe that she lost a stare down to a worthless fat half-breed that needed stones and mumblings to activate her powers. Orchid also needed those same amulets and spells but she knew that her powers tested stronger than this bitches. She, Orchid, tested at 53% while the Nah'Byian tested at 48%. Under normal circumstances neither would be in The Academy of Elite, as to enter the person's powers needed to be at 70%, they also had to be able to use their abilities without spells or amulets. Orchid's parents made a large donation to bump her up on the list in front of other qualified candidates that went to other Academy locations. The only reason Kayla was there is because the ruling council wanted to make moves to conquer a new planet...peacefully.
--------
Kayla, tried to hide her smirk as she took the papers from her. She looked down at the official seal that resembled a snarling dragon and started to walk away to read what was inside. She'd really wanted to send that bitch flying behind the desk back there. She had remembered at the last moment that when she'd been tested for her powers that she had held back. This made it seem like her abilities were useless without spells or amulets like Orchid's work when in reality all she needed to do was simply wave her hand fit simple spells.
She opened the door and ran directly into a very hard, chiseled body. Looking up at the owner she wondered if she would get the same treatment she received from the tongue clicking cosmetic beauty. What she saw took her breath away.
Standing in front of her had to be the finest specimen that the universe had ever created. She knew from reviewing the school's manual that he was a second year, he was wearing a dark green and silver uniform, and from the silver toned pins on his blazer he was one of the top 10 students in his class. He was staring back at her with the most beautiful blue eyes. It was like looking into the midnight sky on a starless night, the moon was somewhere shining making the blue look breathtaking but it couldn't be seen. He had a straight narrow nose that turned up just a little at the tip and it sat above lips that looked like they should be kissed all day, every day, nonstop. His lips were a pale pink that she wanted to make red with deep hot kisses, a thought she'd never had before. His hair was a golden wheat color that made her think of the fields at home, the fields she knew were coveted by the Alliance.
I need to look away. Kayla thought to herself so she pulled her eyes from his face and down to the chest she just crashed into. Her friends all thought that non-Nah'Byian guys had bird chest but there is nothing small or weak about the pecs she just crashed into. His frame was smaller than a Nah'Byian male but he seemed just as solidly built as they are. For a second she wanted to run her hands on his stomach to see if it was just as hard as his chest. But she looked away towards where people were sitting and noticed they were all looking.
"I-I-I apologize. I didn't see you." Kayla stuttered to the Adonis standing in front of her. She looked back up at his face to judge if he would except her apologize or if he was furious and hateful like the girl behind her?
-------
Lucas Sinclair was walking from the mathematics adviser's office, he'd just left some of his friends to check on Orchid to see if she needed anything, she'd been at the front office all day and now was waiting for the last admittance, before he headed back to his rooms for the night. While he was waving goodbye to Jacob Lawson he felt something crash into him. When he looked down from his 6'3 height he saw a girl with tight long curly chestnut hair and creamy skin the color of his favorite caramel treat. He could tell she was staring at him and he decided that he'd take this opportunity to stare, too. When she looked back down he took that opportunity to look at what he could only call a lush and full body. He wished the women of his planet...of the alliance would realize that not all man liked that "willowy, and slender body" look. Breasts on a twig didn't look sexy at all.
He gazed at her cute button nose and soft, brown eyes that looked like she'd just woken up. Then he took in her naturally pink, full lips stuck in a pout and wondered if she would accept a kiss like all the other girls at The Academy. He was Lucas Sinclair, his family name's preceded him wherever he went. Every female no matter how young or old tripped over themselves to get into his good graces and if lucky into his bed.
"You clumsy cow!" Orchid's face was a molten red as she glared coming from behind the desk to confront Kayla. "How dare you touch him," she continued to scream once she stood less than a foot from Kayla.
Because of her banshee loud voice, everyone continued to turn and stare at the scene.
Kayla and Lucas looked at her as she screeched. Kayla stood wide eyed in shock and Lucas stared ahead expressionlessly.
Kayla sighed, exhaustively, as she looked down again at her packet. It had been a very long ride to get to the planet of Jigu and she hadn't slept in almost 2 days because of her excitement. She didn't feel like being bothered by some crazy, prejudiced Ah'Tarian that obviously had a superiority complex.
Rolling her eyes mentally she plastered a fake smile back on her face and turned back to the guy she just ran into and in her most bubbly voice said loudly; "I'm sorry that I crashed into you in my excitement! Please accept my apology as I'm gonna leave now." With that she walked around the god's gift to women and exited the main office.
Lucas watched as she walked away happy she didn't have her fire blue blazer that would have obstructed her curves, all she had now was her blue jumpsuit. Her back was just as lovely as her front and the front was really nice.
Running his hand through his hair he rolled his eyes at his cousin. "Orchid," he started exasperated by his long day and now he had to speak to her about her attitude to the young woman that just left. He walked towards her with a slight smile, "I know you are on edge because this is your final year at The Academy and you are getting married to further secure the family's alliance with the Valox Nation. Don't take it out on the Nah'Byian. We need her, and her people, to tell her father how wonderful the Alliance is when she goes home.'
Orchid stood with her mouth open in disbelief "I don't believe what I'm hearing from you Lucas! That thing could barely be called a woman and you want to try to make nice with her." In a fit of rage, Orchid poked her already pouty red lip out further and started to take a defensive stance looking away from him. I'm not making friends with none any of those sniveling, cowardly backwater people. Orchid's thoughts were clear on her face and easy for Lucas to read.
Lucas continued more firmly as he saw she was not going to bow to his whims, "More Nah'Byians will be coming before you are through here and you need to make them all feel more welcomed. You are a Sinclair through your mother. If we have to talk about this again...." He grabbed her face. Orchid cried out softly in pain at the grip but Lucas didn't care as long as she was looking him in the eye, "I will make sure that you regret defying me."
Lucas watched Orchid's eyes widen and saw the fear in her eyes as he felt the change. His midnight blue eyes started to pale to glacier blue. Small sounds left her throat and he could feel her mouth trying to open against his hand. He smiled when he felt her body try to move away from him. He knew it was because she saw his teeth. Only the purest Ah'Tarians of the highest order had fangs. All Ah'Tarians had powers, ranging from 10% to 100%, but only the strongest, those with powers in the 95% range had fangs. Lucas's lineage could be traced back to the time that the Ah'Tarians ruled the underworld on Earth and were called vampires, witches, warlocks and werewolves, plainly spoken: monsters. Ah'Tarians were the things earthlings thought went bump in the night.
Lucas was staring at his cousin and he had the overwhelming thought of breaking her jaw by crushing it in his hand. He knew she'd be better by tomorrow thanks to her ability to heal but he decided against it. The room wasn't empty. There were a few Ah'Tarians, Valoxes and Rayians sitting off to the side making small talk. He looked around the room to see that they were all hard pressed not to be staring at what was going on by the door.
Lucas released her and gave her a warm and friendly smile. He knew they were too far away to hear what was said or to see his eyes change but they definitely would have noticed if he crushed her jaw in his hand. They would have heard it and witnessed the devastation of it. They definitely would have spread the word of his cruelty.
With a smile that didn't reach his once again midnight blue eyes he said in an overly loud voice, "Let me walk you to your room."
--------
Orchid knew that she was in trouble all because she expressed her dislike of that fat cow and she knew she had best get out of trouble. The last thing she wanted was for Lucas to take his frustration out on her, her blood still ran cold when she thought about what he did to her his freshman year. Even with her quick healing abilities she was unable to go to classes for a week after she asked him about a test he didn't do well on. She did not ever want to get on her cousin's bad side ever again.
She managed a smile and said, "I have a lot of paper work that needs to be completed and filed." She prayed to the gods he didn't offer to wait for her. As a last resort she added, "I also need to finish typing up some papers for Mr. Manning." When she saw that he was just staring she was ready to plead with him to go to his room and leave her to her work.
Orchid was close to tears and knew that she was reaching for excuses for him not to walk her to her room. She was afraid that she'd receive more punishment and he was slightly amused as he watched her eyes tear up and listened to the plea in her voice.
Shrugging, Lucas finally responded in a cold whisper for her ears only, "Seems like you have a lot to do. Let me not keep you any further." She was relieved as she visibly relaxed and her smile started to look more genuine. In a louder more friendly voice for all in the room to hear, "Sorry you have so much more stuff to do! Talk to you later, cuz! I've got to go find Jacob." With that he turned on his highly polished black boot heel and left.
Orchid watched as Lucas walked away from the front office and continued to watch as he exited the main building. She let out a sigh and wondered to herself how her wonderful, caring and loving aunt that was always full of laughter and her intelligent and handsome uncle could have had such a twisted and sadistic son. She quelled a shudder that was trying to run up her spine and hurried back to her desk. With all the people in the room watching she needed to get back to the made up work she had to complete. The office needed to close as it was now after 22:00 and she had classes tomorrow.
