Chapter 26

Chapter 26

"I killed him," I mumbled before rolling the pages and turning around to the next page. The silence was thick when I told Wayne who I had killed. Meeting with his eyes, I quickly added, "He wasn't a good guy and he had molested quite a few women around the city. I wasn't comfortable in living with a rapist and my motherly instincts were acting up, therefore, the need to kill."

"You created a whole mess." He sighed and then shook his head in disappointment. His eyes lowered to the next image of a young, teenage boy. "What about him?"

"No, I didn't kill him!" I said, speaking the truth.

Over the past hour, we had gone through different deaths that happened in the city under Thomas' ruling while I was living there. I managed to find most of the men I had killed out of anger and spite but the rest murders weren't on me.

"Are you sure?"

"He's a young, teenage boy. I wouldn't kill him." My lashes flickered and I gawked at Wayne in disbelief to even think that I would kill an innocent child.

When I left town and fled to the city, I had an unfamiliar urge to kill the wrongdoers and I had managed to kill quite a lot of men during my stay there. It was the only reason why Thomas kidnapped me and threatened me.

I didn't regret killing any of them, not even Thomas. They deserved whatever they got.

"Well, I suppose that does it." He folded the papers and collected them before placing them over another bundle. "I hope you don't go around killing anyone here." He returned his attention to me and said.

I scoffed and then waved my hand, "Of course, I wouldn't kill anyone—" then, I thought about it. "Until they harm me." I smiled at him.

A frown fell over his face, "I'm here to protect you. You don't need to kill anyone." He said, walking away from the table and coming around to near me. His hand stretched, reaching my hair before he pulled a few strands of my hair behind my ear. "I'm your mate."

"Yes."

I accepted him, regardless of our differences but for some reason, I couldn't accept him fully, until I was aware of every bit detail of his one year without me. I wanted to know what all he had done and what secrets he hid from me.

So, I began, "How's the pack doing? I went over to the hills a few days ago and it's beautiful. I see you've changed a lot of things." I questioned him, slowly as he drifted back to the couch.

We were still inside his lavish, old-style office, making up things and spending the day together to learn about each other. I had told him all that I had done, where I had stayed, the neighbor next door, the little boy I played with, and the people I had killed. There were only a couple of details I had left out but asides from that, Wayne knew everything else.

It was his chance now.

"It's good. They actually see me as an Alpha now, especially when there is no one else to control me. I have full control of the town and everything works out the way I want it to work out." He explained, a bit of concern on his face. I suppose it was because of the past few years had been hard on him as the Alpha of the pack.

The Omegas were always separated from the rest of the pack but when I went over to the hills, I could finally see that they had settled down with whatever had been given to them.

"What did you do over the year? How did you gain their trust?" I asked, leaning against the desk and folding my leg across the other one.

"Threats and punishments," He grinned while his eyes spread through my body. "It always works."

My jaw dropped. Really? "Not on me." I replied with confidence.

"Mhm." He cleared his throat before looking away with a smug grin over his face.

I rolled my eyes. I guess there was something about an Alpha's threats that forced us to bend to his rules.

A few seconds of silence passed by before he stood up from the couch and headed to me. "Let's go. I'll drop you home." He offered, his hand stretched out to me.

"I don't want to go home."

"I can't leave you here, Clara. Go home, have some food and get some rest. There will be a lot more to do tomorrow morning." He said, taking my hand and forcing me to walk along with him.

Something told me that he didn't want to continue the conversation any further. I could tell from the way he was reacting that he was hiding something from me.

"So, what's the secret?" I whispered in his ears when getting inside the elevator.

His shoulders were taut and his eyes were fixated on the little monitor at the corner indicating which floor we were going in. "What secret?" No emotion crossed his face but I knew he was hiding something.

"I know you are keeping some secret, Wayne or you wouldn't be hosting galas and events every other weekend around here." I stood near to his shoulders, my head leveling with it while I tried to pull the secret out of him.

"It's simply for collecting donations, Clara." He replied.

I strained back at the mirror of the elevator, "Liar."

He turned around and placed his hands on my hips while his mischief smirk curled over his lips, "Why would I ever lie to you?"

"Because you can," I pouted, "Just tell me. I promise I won't tell anyone. It will be our little secret." I continued to pester him until he would speak up but he had a stronger hold than I had thought.

He uttered nothing, "If there was anything, you would've been informed about it but there is nothing, kitten." He smiled as his hands continued to race across my hips and to my lower.

The ding echoed in the elevator and it opened. I took in a deep breath and then walked out of the elevator. Wayne followed me outside till we reached the parking of the building. Giving him the silent treatment, I got inside the car quietly and didn't utter another word as he drove me back to the house.

"Clara." He tried to call out my name a couple of times but I didn't look at him nor gave in.

He was hiding something. I knew it. My wolf knew it and I wanted to know what it was.

"Alright, tell me, what do you want to know?" He asked, parking the car outside of his house and locking the doors from the inside.

"Whatever you're hiding." I stated. "The gala is tomorrow so whatever it is, I will know and I don't want to hear it from anyone else so please, tell me." I gave him another chance before the weekend came by.

He laughed a little before grabbing my hand and stretching, "There is nothing." He repeated.

"Liar."

"It's just work, Clara. Nothing more. I promise." He said, his tone softer. Pulling my hand, he kissed it and then unlocked the car doors before switching off the engine. "Let's go."

I peered at him the entire time as we walked inside the house and were greeted by Nora. She was preparing for dinner in the kitchen. After seeing her, I worked my way back into my room to hop for a shower but before showering, I wanted something else.

Something Wayne had promised me.

"Remember what you said at the office..." I trailed off while running my hands down his face and over his shoulders.

He circled his hands around my wrists and pulled them away. "Not now, Clara."

"Why not?"

"It's—I'm just not feeling it." His eyes wandered around the room while he spoke to me. Doubt and confusion spread over his face.

I furrowed my brows and retorted, "What?" I started, "You're not feeling it? So you don't want to fuck me?"

"I do—it's just that—" His words were jumbling quite a lot. He sounded as if he was going to break down about something. "Just not right now."

"Why not?" I remained confused.

Did he not enjoy it with me anymore? Was he not attracted to me? Did he not find me alluring anymore? What was it?

The numerous questions running in my head wanted answers, quickly.

"We can watch a movie or something else. I—I am just not—I don't know how to say it to you." He stuttered while his hands reached for me.

I pushed his hands aside as disappointment tore through me. I felt as if he had ripped something out of me by rejecting me. It was the first time ever he had done it and I didn't know what to feel exactly.

"I got you." I nodded and then turned around to leave the room.

He grabbed my hand and pulled me back to his embrace, "No. Don't get angry on this. I didn't mean to hurt you."

"Well, you did!" I exclaimed, pushing him off once more.

"I'm just protecting you, Clara." He snapped.

"From what?" I yelled louder as a nerve in my head throbbed in agony. I couldn't believe anything that was leaving from his mouth. I shuffled back from him whilst my brows collected. "From what?" I repeated, my voice lower than a whisper.

"I just don't want you to go through it all again. I just want us to take this slow." When he spoke, I could read through his lies. I always could.

So I scoffed and then laughed it away. He wasn't concerned about making me go through the past again. I could tell it from his eyes and from his nervous breathing.

"Are you serious?"

"Clara..." He took a step closer.

"No, you're just fucking lying to me. You don't want me to go through the same pain, then wrap your dick for all I care. I won't get pregnant!" I exclaimed.

"It's not like that." He shook his head, clearly hiding something behind.

"Leave it." I walked out of the room before the argument was going to get any worse.
