Chapter 18
[recap]
"Are you sure you're alright, Neville?" I asked, searching his face for traces of fear or worry. He weakly smiled at me, but said nothing.
We sat like that for what seemed like hours before he came in.

-Ron-
Ernie Macmillan strolled in, an expression of deep concern on his face.
"What happened?" he questioned, cocking his head to the side and kneeling next to Ginny.
"She's fine, we already had her looked at." Harry piped up in what seemed like a defensive manner as Ernie tried to hold her hand for a pulse.
"Oh," he simply replied. He didn't seem to have anything else to say, but powerfully slapped me on the back saying, "It might have happened one of these days,"
Is he being serious? This is his idea of comfort? Yeah, Hufflepuff...
I gave him a look to show that it mattered, but he didn't seem to notice. I glanced at all of them, trying to read their emotions.
Luna was the pacifist, calmly looking around at the world as if it were a rainbow.
Neville had that abandoned chipmunk sort of boyish look, but he had grown out of it slightly. He seemed worried, biting at his fingernails like his life depended on it.
Harry looked like his best friend was dying, which was sort of offensive to me, firstly because she wasn't even close to dying, and secondly because I was his best friend who was in perfectly good health.
Hermione no longer showed any emotion, and a book had appeared randomly for her to read. Of course, it was 'Hogwarts, A History'.
And as for Ernie, he seemed completely nonchalant and carefree.
It was then that I noticed another figure here, besides Ernie.
Malfoy was lurking in the corner of the room, casually looking around and at the ceiling, making no noise and showing no emotion.
I was enraged. Malfoy had no right to show up and just stand there like some fat cow while my only sister was in danger. It was probably him, too, and he probably came here just to gloat.
And I wouldn't stand for it.
"What are you doing here, Malfoy? Get away from my sister!" I sneered indignantly. Malfoy shot me a look, and Hermione's gaze jolted up from her book. She looked alarmed as Malfoy was the one to saunter over to me.
"Is there a problem, Weasel? I thought we were room buddies." he replied, clearly not shaken by me.
"It's not my fault your hearing bloody voices all the time." I muttered under my breath, making sure he heard.
Ernie left quietly.
"As far as I'm concerned, all of us are." Malfoy said coldly. He shoved his hands in his pockets and looked quite bored. Harry gave me a shut-up-and-duel-him look.
No, Ronald.
Mum's voice echoed in my head.
Just leave him be, not worth the trouble...
Another voice was in my head.
You know he deserves it. Just give him a little duel. Show him what your made of. Show him to stay away. Far away.
On instinct, my hand flew to my pocket, where my wand was. I slowly lifted it out and held it high.
"You and me, Malfoy." I challenged. Hermione came bursting in between us as Malfoy withdrew his wand.
"Is this really necessary? I mean, Ginny's fine, right? No need to fight," she nervously laughed.
"No, maybe the Weasel is right for once." Malfoy said with his infamous scowl.
Ginny flinched, before her eyes fluttered open and she ninja kicked the air. "Nooooo!" she screamed. "I WON'T!" Her eyes met Harry's. She stood up quietly and brushed herself off with her hands. "Oh, err...sorry, Harry." She turned to Malfoy and I. "And what are you doing?"
"I could ask the same," Malfoy growled. "Practically knocked out for two hours and ninja kicking air." Ginny glared at him in response.
"We're going to duel..." I answered.
"And why is that?" Ginny proudly stated.
"Well..."
"Exactly, now stop with this funny business since we're all on the same side--"
That was when Malfoy launched the first spell. The killing curse. At me.
I barely had time to react as I dodged it. Ginny was practically baring her teeth as she whipped out her wand and started to hex him. I didn't know too many destructive spells myself, but I threw in the occasional 'Incendio', which did nothing, though it made him flinch. Neville and Luna had left at the mere sight of a fight.
I wouldn't admit to myself that Malfoy could actually duel. He stood for himself, and occasionally shot spells at Harry, who at the moment was an innocent bystander. This caused Harry to spring into action, while Hermione seemed near tears again as she chose no side. Of course, she was probably the most effective one with spells and in duels, so Malfoy held up longer.
"Hermione, are you bloody crazy? Come here and help!" I nearly yelled as she crouched on the floor, seeming miles below. She only continued to sob.
Ginny seemed grim, and I figured she knew why Hermione was crying. "Hermione, come on," Ginny said with an edge in her voice. I guessed this was some sort of girl language, for sure enough, Hermione pulled herself up and grabbed her wand.
But she didn't come and join us. She joined Malfoy. I watched in awe as she sided with him, though she didn't fire any spells at us, which I was thankful for. But what was she doing with a bloody Malfoy?
"I suppose this settles it," Hermione tersely provided as she stood there. She teared away from my glance, and I knew there was hurt in my eyes. Sure, it sounded like child's play, but one small thing can have a ripple effect. But besides, Hermione liked me, right? Right.
I could tell Ginny knew something, for it looked like she was blushing and giggling madly. She never giggled, unless she fangirled or knew something. I silently prayed that it was the latter.
Since Ginny was fine, everyone seemed pretty relaxed-for the most part. Hermione was holding her book in a death grip all the while; Ginny was slightly leaning on Harry and holding his hand. I slowly inched over to them, sensing I was making things awkward for them and silently praising myself.
"Hey mate," I slipped in between them, creating an unusually large gap. Ginny looked furious, but I ignored her. "What are you up to?"
"Oh...err...hi, Ron." Harry looked slightly annoyed, but made no effort to make me move.
"Harry was just telling me about what it's like with the Muggles, weren't you Harry?" Ginny prided with a slight grin.
"Oh yeah," Harry said. (A/N: if you remember how he said it in POB to Aunt Marge when she asked if he was being beat up/whipped then that's how he said it)
I rolled my eyes. "Yeah, because Harry cares so much about those stupid Dursleys." Nevertheless, I inched out of the space between them, still reminding myself to keep a close watch on them.
"Well," Hermione finally spoke, "I suppose we should head back." Ginny promptly nodded, and we all walked out while Draco lingered.
I decided to pay no mind to it and followed out the last person, which was Hermione.
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
-Draco-
I waited until everyone had left. Ron had glared at me, but he apparently decided against figuring out what I was doing.
Once I made sure that everyone was gone, I felt for the familiar spot on the wall. Again, I checked to make sure no one was watching.
There was no one, but I felt strange, like there was someone.
I turned back to the wall, where a portion had opened to make a sort of box-like door. I slipped inside and made sure to shut it behind me so it resealed and went back to looking like an original wall.
I glanced around me. The Slytherin house colors adorned almost everything visible, and the sleek furniture mimicked that of the Malfoy Manor. It all disgusted me, really, but Father insisted that it was made. The real purpose was unknown to me; Father said he would tell me when I proved I was worthy. And I had no choice but to do so.
I flopped down into a broad, brown leather recliner, which had a green and gray blanket nestled in it; it wasn't the cozy kind either, the blanket was made of the horrible scratchy wool that was supposed to be comfortable.
The hideout was placed in the Gryffindor area, since the Slytherin's would be too obvious.
I sat there, thinking about everything. I knew I would have to betray everyone eventually, and this false security wouldn't last long. I felt bad, since some of them were being so nice to me, while I knew who it was that was causing them their agony.
But I couldn't stop now. At least, I didn't think I could. It was too risky, and the truth could cost me my life, and my family. I couldn't stand it.
I jumped up from my seat and ran into the next room. Like the past one, it was lavishly decorated, giving me a feeling of disgust and loathing.
There was an orb floating around in this room, strangely teetering about in an odd fashion. I grabbed onto it, using my skill as the Slytherin Seeker. I didn't have much time for Quidditch these days, but every once in a while I would take my old broom and fly around the school; this was done in the dead of night.
I inspected the orb closely, and noticed that it resembled a Golden Snitch. Suddenly, words floated across the object. They read, 'Caught your attention, didn't I?'
I smirked; it sounded like something I would say. I only nodded my head a bit, but wondered about the orb, and how it knew anything about me. The orb flinched in my hand; it now read, 'Don't you remember me?'
I immediately dropped the orb.
No. It couldn't be.
