Chapter 1: First Day

Samantha woke with start.

"Samantha, this is the last time I am calling you!", her mother yelled from down stairs. Samantha groaned. Her head still hurt, like all the other times she woke up from that nightmare. Samantha looked in the mirror. Samantha had just turned fourteen that summer, the year her family moved to Utah. Her brown hair glowed in the morning sun. The only unusual thing about her appearance was that her eyes were a stunning blue. Samantha looked in the mirror one more time, then started getting ready for school.

' Why do I keep having that dream?' Samantha kept thinking as she grabbed her backpack, 'Is there a meaning to this?'. Samantha ran down the stairs and collided with her father.

"Sorry dad!" Samantha cried as she looked at the glass and the orange juice on her dad's shirt.

"Here let me help you!" said Samantha

"No need." said her dad in a sarcastic tone. "I have a million of these shirts."

"Glad to see you finally woke up Samantha." her mother said in a bored tone.

"Sorry," Samantha said, "Was in the middle of a very elaborate dream."

"Let me guess. It had a boy in it."

"Dad!" Samantha cried aghast.

"Do you want toast or pancakes?" her mother asked, "And please don't yell at your father like that."

"I'll take the toast, since I'm in a rush." Samantha said timidly.

The kitchen went quiet except for the beep of the toaster. Samantha couldn't stop thinking about her dream.

"Samantha," her mother said in a questioning tone, "Do you remember all the school work you did this summer?"

"Yeah. I worked my butt off."

"Well I sent it to your new school and they are offering a tutoring course, so I thought that it was perfect for you."

"Why did you not tell me about this mom?" Samantha asked. Her mother set the toast down in front of her.

"I thought it was the best for you." said her mother sympathetically.

Samantha could not believe her mother. She finished her toast, rather hurriedly. Samantha heard the rumble of a bus.

"Got to go!" yelled Samantha.

"Bye Sam!" her dad yelled.

"Text me to tell me if your a tutor!" her mother reminded her. Samantha grabbed her backpack and headed out the door. The bus stopped abruptly in front of Samantha.

"Are you Samantha Perkins?" the bus driver asked.

"Yes." Samantha said unsurely.

"Well welcome aboard and find a seat. I'm Mr. Thomas and will be you bus driver until you graduate!"

Samantha felt the bus move so she quickly tried to find a seat. She decided to sit down next to a girl with dark brown hair, headphones, and gorgeous green eyes.

"Hello," Samantha said timidly, "My name is Samantha Perkins. What's yours?"

"Hi, Samantha!", said the girl a little too enthusiastically, "My name is Grace Sparrow." The girls instantly bonded. Sharing stories about their summer adventures. Then Samantha started talking about the homework load and that is where Grace stopped her.

"There is nothing wrong with doing extra homework." said Grace.

"But when your mom tries to surprise you and sets you up," Samantha said angrily.

"What do you mean tries to set you up'?" asked Grace. Samantha then told Grace about what her mom had told her this morning.

"Is there anything wrong to being a tutor?" asked Samantha.

"No," said Grace, "I have friends who became tutors this year. They'll be able to show you around."

The bus stopped in front of Seaside High school. Samantha starred in awe about how big the High School was.

"Impressed?" asked Grace as she starred at Samantha. Samantha could only nod. The two, new friends, walked into the High School when Grace stopped Samantha.

"Hey, maybe I should give you my phone number, just in case you get lost." Grace said in a sarcastic tone.

"Ha ha." said Samantha but she nodded and accepted the phone number. After the exchange of phone numbers, the two new friends walked up to the front desk.

"Hi Ms. Daisy," said Grace cheerfully.

"Hi girls." replied Ms. Daisy equally as cheerful. "What can I help you with?"

"Um... I just had a question," Samantha said nervously, but she knew there was no turning back.

"I was just wondering if you got the school work my mom turned in?"

"Yes"

"So would that mean I'm a tutor?"

"Let me go check in the back." Ms. Daisy said quickly and walked off.

"Hey I just realized something," said Grace.

"What?"

"Your last name is Perkins, as in the famous Dr. Perkins!"

"Well yeah, he's my dad." Samantha replied very proud.

"Oh." The girls stood there in silence as Ms. Daisy walked up.

"Good news Samantha," she said, "You are a tutor!" Samantha starred with her mouth open.

"What?" asked Samantha.

"Here is your lock," said Ms. Daisy completely ignoring Samantha's confused look. "and here is your new schedule. It has your locker numbers on there."

"But I don't know where to go."

"I'll show her where it is" piped in Grace. The two girls thanked Ms. Daisy and walked in silence to the Tutor hallway.

"Here we are." said Grace five minutes later.

"Thanks."

"Remember if you need anything, I'll send someone over." Samantha could only nod. As Grace walked away, Samantha started putting things in her locker. She was trying to debate which side she wanted her lock on. She finally decided to put her special lock, that only she could open with a scan of her thumb print, on her second locker with her book bag and lunchbox on it. As she was finishing up, two hands grabbed her and shoved her inside her locker. She heard the door slam and a lock click. Samantha started freaking out.

"Please, let me out," she pleaded but the people who shoved her into her locker completely ignored her. Samantha started crying, but she then remembered that she had Grace's phone number.

"Remember if you need anything, I'll send someone over." Samantha remembered. Samantha pulled out her phone and texted a plea for help.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Grace was sketching. That's what she did when she was bored. Grace was doodling a true loves kiss when she felt her phone vibrate. Looking to see if the teacher was looking, Grace pulled out her phone and examined the text. Grace quickly responded to Samantha. She then looked up and texted Peter.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Samantha felt her phone vibrate in her pocket. She wiped away her tears and pulled out her phone and read her text.

"Don't worry, I'm on my way!"

Samantha sighed with relief. Grace coming to help meant that she would bring a teacher and those boys will surely be gone. Samantha started to cry, happy tears, because she that she would be saved.

"Hey," yelled a very unfamiliar voice. "Why would you do that?"

"To give some appreciation for our nerd gang." replied one of the bullies. Samantha was shocked. She was getting help from nerds? Samantha cried even harder. This time not happy tears.

"Why don't we see who is the best?" said another voice. "Bronze vs. brains?"

"What's the prize?" asked the bully in an interested tone.

"The prize is the person in the locker." replied the voice.

"Deal." the bully said cracking his knuckles in the process. Samantha tried to see what was going on, but it was impossible. She then heard a thud to her left and to her right. Samantha heard a click from her lock and the locker was opened.

"Sorry about that." said a boy with green eyes and blonde hair. He helped Samantha out of the locker.

"Wait," said one of the guys with a blue t-shirt on. "This isn't Grace."

"Maybe she got her hair done this summer?" said the boy with green eyes.

"I think you are mistaken," said Samantha. "My name is Samantha Perkins." The boys starred in awe.

"What?" asked Samantha, looking over her shoulder.

"Your last name-I mean-are you related to the famous Dr. Perkins?" asked another boy in a black t-shirt.

"Yeah, he's my dad." replied Samantha. The boys starred at her in shock.

"Sorry," said the boy with green eyes. "I forgot my manners. My name is Peter. This is my brother John." the boy in the blue t-shirt waved. "Finally, this is Rez." Peter said pointing to the boy in the black t-shirt. Samantha waved and blushed. She thought that they were all cute boys, but Peter stood out with his blonde hair and green eyes.

"Shall we escort Ms. Perkins to the room," asked John. The boys jumped at the mention of this, but agreed.

The boys lead Samantha into a room. When they stepped into the room, Samantha stopped at the sight. The room seemed to glow gold. The chairs shined in the spotlight, and the tables were so clean that you could see your reflection in it. Samantha stared in awe.

"Pretty isn't it?" asked Peter. Samantha could only nod.

"Mr. Zeus," said Rez. "We have a new tutor." Mr. Zeus put down the news paper he was holding. Samantha noticed that it had a picture of her fathers latest invention on it with a picture of her family.

"Rez, Peter, John, do you realize who you just brought in here?" asked Mr. Zeus. But before any of them could respond a voice came on over the intercom.

"Mr. Zeus."

"Yes."

"May I see Samantha, Peter, John, and Rez in the office?"

"Sure"

"Thanks." There was dead silence. Peter headed to the door, but he was stopped.

"Let me pass through John."

"No." The brothers started arguing, but Samantha was no help. She was in her own shock. 'Why do I have to go to the office on my first day!' As this thought pondered through Samantha's mind, she heard a yell that jolted her back to reality.

"Stop it!" yelled Rez. The boys stared at him in shock. Apparently he did not talk a lot.

"Let's just head down to the office and see what they want." said Rez and headed out the door. The brothers looked at each other with apologetic expressions, then followed Rez. Samantha looked at Mr. Zeus then followed the boys out the door.

There was silence for awhile as they walked down the hall.

"Peter."

"Yeah, John"

"What if we get detention, does that mean we can't go and get ice cream after school today?" Before Peter could answer, Samantha said, "You guys go and get ice cream after school?"

"Yeah, but only on the first day." replied John.

"Would you like to come?" asked Peter. Samantha was shocked. She had never been asked to do anything with boys because her father was too over protective.

"Yeah let me just text my mom really fast." Samantha turned away and texted her mom. She left out that she would be going with a group of boys. After finishing the text, Samantha headed back towards the boys and they continued walking to the office.

After awhile Samantha felt her phone vibrate in her pocket. She pulled it out and saw the reply.

'R u going with boys?' Samantha felt her stomach sink. She knew if she told her parents that it would be an automatic no.

'No there are no boys' Samantha replied. She knew once her parents found out that she would be grounded from ever dating a boy.

"So can you go?" asked John.

"Yeah." said Samantha.

"Great." said Peter. The group turned a corner and there was the office.

"Mr. Brown is waiting for you in is office." said Ms. Daisy. The four sat down in the chairs next to the principal's office. After a moment of silence, except for the printer, the two bullies-who had shoved Samantha into her locker- came out, closely followed by Mr. Brown.

Mr. Brown saw Samantha and the three boys sitting there in total silence. Samantha looked like she was about to cry. John looked pale in the face. Rez looked like he might pass out and Peter looked straight ahead.

"Can you four please come in?" asked Mr. Brown. Samantha got up and motioned to the boys to follow her. The four of them trooped into the office, closely followed behind Mr. Brown.

"Mr. Brown, this is not Samantha's fault," started John, but Mr. Brown held his hand up to silence him.

"Why do I have you four in my office on the first day?" asked Mr. Brown. Nobody looked up. Nobody said anything, until Samantha said, "It's none of their fault, it's mine." Everyone stared. How could the new girl have caused any harm.

"Oh?" said Mr. Brown in a very confused tone. Samantha told him about what happened when she first got on the bus to getting summoned to the office, with the boys popping in.

"The two stories I have heard today match up, but you guys were more cooperative." said Mr. Brown. "I almost thought that I would have to bring in my helper."

"Your helper?" asked Peter. Mr. Brown made a summon. Then out of nowhere, Grace popped out of existence.

"Whoa!" said Samantha and Rez. Grace bowed a couple times then turned to Samantha.

"What are you doing in here your first day?" asked Grace. Samantha retold her story-the shorter version-then said, "How'd you do that?"

"Do what?" asked Grace.

"Disappear then reappear." said Peter.

"Oh." said Grace. Grace looked down then started to talk about how her father was a magician and she had been practicing in the art of magic. After Grace finished, everyone stared at her-except for Mr. Brown.

"Wow, that was unexpected." said John.

"So what do we do?" asked Samantha. Mr. Brown  scratched, then said, "You, Peter, and Grace may go." Everyone looked at John and Rez with apologetic faces then walked out.

"What did you do to the two boys," Samantha asked once she, Peter, and Grace  were out of Mr. Brown's office.

"I can make people imagine things,"said Grace. "I made it seem like there were hundreds of black widows crawling up and down their back." Everyone stared in horror.

"Can you do anything...helpful or happy?" asked Samantha. Grace nodded and said a enchantment. Then Samantha felt like she was on a boat in the evening. Samantha swayed she stood. She started to close her eyes. Samantha then started to fall. Peter put out his arms and caught her. Samantha opened her eyes to find herself in Peter's arms and no longer feeling relaxed.

"Sorry," said Samantha, blushing a little.

"It was nothing." replied Peter. After an awkward moment of silence, John and Rez stepped out looking Grim.

"What's wrong?" asked Peter.

"We have to stay after school and watch those two while they do their detention." replied Rez. Just then the bell rang. Everyone jumped.

"We should probably head to class." said Grace. They all headed to their classes. Samantha only had one thought as she walked down the hall. 'Will this day get only crazier.'
