4.1 | Baseline
Corday was a piece of work, or so Gina thought. Corday was a server written using server ink and server paper. It had taken months to get the language right. As soon as you write it, unless you use sapphire server ink and paper you could not erase it. You could write cancellation phrases, but they would normally be longer than the code they cancelled out. Thus, Gina had written the phrases out perfectly.
A server could perform large calculations, it could also link with circles of power. It is well known, server ink has power, and using this with special paper enables someone who can write, in server language, to create a platform to modify the powers. You could communicate using Corday, as Gina made its main function a forum, allowing people to discuss a variety of topics about servers.
Servers were used throughout the continent of Pangolin. There uses included mathematics, discussion forums, and control of mage circles. The last one being important, as people used mage circles for rituals, teleportation and much more.
Gina decided to make it secure. This was done through the use of language to block access to those who she did not give permission. Gina gave access to most things, they just needed to send a message to the administrator, which was her. The server language phrases she used, also meant that it would send out a virus. She called this virus the cognito virus. The virus would destroy the login page, or server, which was trying to gain access. She did write an antivirus so that the damage could be undone. Gina decided she would only give the antivirus, once the owner admitted why they were trying to access the server without her permission.
This had all been well, till a server tried to breakthrough the security. When this started, she put a message on the server noticeboard that the following day she would need to shut it down. People could contact her by letter and listed her address.
It turned into an utter nightmare quickly. Corday had infected a main server. Only a couple of days later, Gina got visitors from the palace. There was three gentlemen dressed in official suits of the Althea college. All grey with the blue emblem. The short black hair and pale skin. Incisor they got little sunlight. Gina felt very average, as all three were taller than her. Gina's black hair at least was long and as well kept as there hair. She also was not as pale.
It had turned out, the cognito virus had infected the Althea server. The last of the Great Servers created. Great Servers were extremely old and were absolute masterpieces. Mages really needed it. The Althea server controlled two mage circles in Althea and performed many calculations. She had no doubt, the server had other uses, which she did not know about. Gina knew she would need to fix that.
The following day Gina organised time off from work as a clerk with the local carpenter, in her town of Salar. She packed some clothes, and her small server Corday. Taking the local mage circle to Althea, she made it to the Althea college residences. That evening she put a notice on the Corday forums and told every user what had happened. That caused outrage initially, but most agreed that closing Corday was the right thing to do. Gina felt heartbroken, and closed the Corday server from public access.
The following morning, she met a middle-aged man, slightly taller than her. He was extremely nice and was the grand Master of Writing. Unlike Frem, his colleague and assistant, they worked well together and she got to starting repairs straight away. Frem was cold, distant and used his height to tower over Gina. His dark hair was always sleeked back. Gina felt scared of him, but knew he was all show. Frem was jealous of the Grand Master of Writing.
With all the higher ranked people around, it made Gina nervous. Her work slowed down, when it came to writing. What also did not help, was they expected her to pay for the repair materials. This she could not afford, especially since they should have not attacked her server, Baseline. It outraged her, that her work was deemed useless by many of the lower ranked staff. Yet, her work had damaged their servers. They should have better security for their work. After all, she only had an associate degree in writing, these people had a masters or doctorate.
Alas, what was done, was done. Now she needed to fix it and fix it she would. At least her accommodation and meals were free. She spent her evenings Writing Baseline, a new server she had been working on. Gina had gotten sapphire paper and ink for it. It was expensive, but in the long run worth it. Corday was her first server, and was made using standard Writing ink and paper. This standard magic paper and ink was cheap, but once something was recorded, it was permanent. It was favoured by most businesses, because it stopped people from refuting what was written. Servers did better with reusable paper, so writing could be changed.
Gina was not far off of Baseline being finished. She could finish it in the next week. Knowing she would still be at Althea College, she decided to use Corday if she finished Baseline in time.
During this time, she noticed some of the users for Corday, matched user names in the Althea server. These users included Grenspot and Nesco. Unfortunately, she did not have time to look into it now. She decided, once she finished with the Althea server, she would ask around.
