Chapter Six
Love this song, just had to post it. Pretty, Pretty, Please.
Taylor's P.O.V.
"Don't even think about it." She says and takes a step away from me.
"Why it'll be fun?" I ask and take a step towards her.
"Then you jump in the lake." She says and takes another step away from me.
"But it will be funner if you jump in." I say and walk closer to her.
"I don't have my swim suit." She says and tries to make an excuse.
"I've seen you in a sports bra what's the difference." I say and wait for another excuse that she wants to say. I raise my eyebrows at her. She puts one finger up and looks like she's thinking. I pick her up bridal style because she was distracted.
"Don't." She says and clings to me.
"Your going in willingly or I will throw you in." I say and stop right before the lake.
"Fine, Fine." She says. "Let me down."
"K, but if you don't jump in I will throw you in." I say and set her down. She takes of her sweatshirt and shirt.
"Glad I always wear sports bras." She mumbles. "Hey your going in too." She says and points to me. I laugh and start to take my shirt of. Once we're both in just undergarments we jump in.
"It's really cold." She says and treads water to stay afloat.
"Just a little. Can you touch?" I ask and laugh at her.
"No, the water is like 8 feet deep." She says and starts to swim around.
"True." I follow her and she splashes me. "What was that for?" I ask and wipe my face off.
"For saying you were going to throw me in the water and because it was funny to see your reaction." She says and swims away so I can't splash her. I chase her in the water and we challenge each other with different things.
"K, who can hold her breath longer?" I say knowing I can beat her in this one.
"Your on." She says and gets ready. "One, Two, Three." We both go under the water. I last like 45 seconds and then rise to see where Alaina is. Is she still underwater? How can she beat me in this?
Once I count and it's been a minute I start to worry. "Boo." She says behind me and pushes me down. I end up sinking because I wasn't expecting that which makes her laugh and help me up. "Got ya." She says and laughs at me.
"You think that's funny," I say and grab her. She tries to swim away, but can't. "You might want to hold your breath," I say and push her under. She pops up breathing heavily.
"Not cool." She says wiping her face off and splashes me. I go to get her back but she says "I'm too tired to swim anymore." She says and floats on her back. She looks peaceful and beautiful as if she's apart of the water. I want to ask her why she didn't finish when she said Hunter a couple hours ago and why she gets the bad dreams, what are they about and why she jumps so easily, but she would never tell me because her walls are up and she has extra ones so they don't break down.
I think she fell asleep because when I swim towards her she doesn't move or open her eyes.
"What are you doing?" She asks and opens her eyes. I startles me a little and she laughs.
"Thought you were asleep." I say and swim right next to her.
"Want to but you keep moving the water which moves me." She says and goes under the water. When she gets up from under the water I pull her over to me. "What?" She asks a little nervous.
"Float on your back again." I say and swing her on her back.
She stays afloat and asks "Why?"
"Because I want to see something." I say and put my finger near her bruise.
"You touch it I will slap you." She says and turns her head to me.
"He must have gotten you pretty good." I say and trace my finger around her stomach.
"Don't do that, it tickles." She says and laughs. From her laughing she starts to sink so she goes back to treading water. "I'm getting out I can't stay afloat any longer." She says and swims to the edge on the lake. I see her pull her sweatshirt and pants back on and she smiles at me.
"Better." I ask and swim around.
"Ya it's a little warmer." She says and grabs my phone.
"What are you doing?" I ask and swim a little closer to the edge of the lake.
"Seeing the time. What are you afraid that I will find pictures of things that shouldn't be on here?" She says and waves my phone in the air.
"No, I'm not like that." I say go under the water to see a fish go right by my face. "Hey I found a fish." I say and try to hold it. She laughs as the fish flops around and hits me in the face. "Ow, that actually hurts." I say and rub my forehead.
I get out of the lake and pull my pants on. It's a lot cooler when you're not in the water. I go to put my shirt on, but then it will be all wet and will make me colder. I put in next to Alaina's shirt. She probably thought the same thing.
I sit next to her and see what she's looking at. It's me and my ex. Looks like I forgot to delete that picture.
"She's pretty." Alaina says and hands me my phone.
"Ya, but she's a cheater." I say and delete the picture.
"That sucks." She says, but looks a little happier. Wonder why?
"She wasn't that fun anyways. Now I'm done talking about my ex." I say and laugh a little.
"Good idea. Hey, do you have any pictures of your parents?" She asks and leans to look at my phone. She does that, she doesn't seem to understand personal space when she's breaking it.
"Ya, I have a few on my phone, but I have a whole book with pictures," I say and find a picture that was taken a few weeks before they died. "That's the most recent picture I have of them before the... accident," I say and give her my phone. She looks at it for awhile.
"Your Mom was beautiful." She says and hands me my phone back.
"Yes she was," I say and look at the picture. "I miss them so much," I say and wipe the tears away that run down my face.
"Hey it's hard, I'm glad you can let it out." She says and wraps her arms around me.
"Thanks." I say knowing that she's been through the same pain with her father.
Bring, Bring. Alaina jumps and grabs her phone.
"It's my grandma, I have to take it. Sorry." She says and stands up.
"It's fine." I say and she mouths thank you. I nod my head.
"No Grandma it says compose," Alaina says laughing a little as she comes back into earshot.
"K, I will, see you soon." She says and hangs up.
"Can you please, please, please take me to my house. Grandma needs help and wants to see me." She says and puts her phone away.
"Ya, lets go." I say and grab both of our shirts. I throw the shirts in the back of my car and see she's programming the GPS.
Alaina's P.O.V.
When we get into his car I program the GPS. He starts asking me questions, but I can't focus because he doesn't have a shirt on. Why do I look? Because I'm interested, and I don't need to explain myself.
"Hello, Alaina. Are you in your own world?" He asks and waves his hand in front of me.
"What?" I question and look up at him not his abs for a change.
"Is this the right house?" He points. I look at it and nod my head. Taylor laughs and pulls in.
"Hey, put a shirt on. I don't need my grandma thinking things and my grandpa wanting to kill you." I say and get out of his car. He puts his shirt on and jogs to catch up to me. "Grandma it's me and my friend." I say and take off my shoes. "Take your shoes off or you won't have a head when my grandma sees you." I whisper to Taylor. He gives me a scared look and hurries to get his shoes off.
"There you are beautiful. Can you help me? I think I'm going blind, I can't find the compose button thingy, whatever it's called." She says. I go up the stairs and walk over to her laptop.
"Grandma its the biggest thing on there." I say and point to it.
"Oh, I was looking over there and there. Silly me. Thanks, I would have been here looking for hours trying to find it if you didn't come home."
"It's no probable grandma. Grandma this is Taylor, Taylor grandma AKA Karen." I say and my grandma turns around.
"Sorry, I was being rude, but that button was not there." She says and hugs Taylor. He looks surprised, but hugs her back.
"I know what you mean and it's nice meeting you." He says and smiles at her.
"You too, my husband is in the shop if you want to say hi." My grandma says and smiles back at him.
I walk towards Taylor and say in his ear, "That's her nice way of saying go meet my husband so she can talk to me."
"Oh, ok, see you soon Alaina and it was nice meeting you Karen." He says and leaves.
"He seems nice." My grandma says and sits back down.
"He is and doesn't go and getting any ideas Grandma," I say and raise my eyebrows at her.
"I won't promise anything, but I'll try not to get any ideas." She says and smiles at me.
"Great." I say sarcastically.
Taylor's P.O.V.
I grab my shoes and go to the garage. "Um, Hi. I'm one of Alaina's friends." I say awkwardly.
"Oh, hi son. Can you help me with this car? My hands are too old to get the bolt tight." The old man says. I walk over to him and grab the wrench. After tightening it he says, "Thanks son." and wipes his hands on a rag. "My name is Rick."
"Taylor." I say and shake his hand.
"Did my wife tell you to come out here?" He asks and sits down on a chair.
"Ya." I say and look around. The garage is huge and it has like three different cars and a ton of different tools. Rick laughs a little.
"Doesn't surprise me. You know you're the first boy she has brought home. She brings her girlfriends, but never a boy. Are you to dating?" He questions and stares at me.
"No, we were just hanging out so I drove her here." I say and hope that Alaina comes out to help me.
"What are your grades like?" He asks still staring at me.
"I'm an A B student." I say hoping he doesn't expect me to say straight As like Alaina.
"What do you want to do for a living?" He asks like it's an interrogation.
"I want to be a doctor and so far I'm on the right track." I say and look outside. I can see Alaina through the window in the house. She laughing and trying to help her grandma.
"I know you like her I can see it in your eyes," Rick says and I look at him. I go to argue but he puts his hand up. "Don't lie to me son. I know that look. You seem to have your head on straight, but if she ever comes home crying and it's because of you there will be a grave in the woods. Do you understand me?" He says and walks towards me. I think all of Alaina's family is scary protective and it runs in her genes too.
"Yes, and I won't hurt her." I say. He pats me on the shoulder.
"Good now lets go into the house." Once we get back in the house I hear the thunder. "Great." I mumble to myself. I make sure to take my shoes off and walk up to Alaina.
"Hey, I'm gonna head home. Don't want the storm to get too heavy before I leave." I say and her grandma turns around.
"Hey you're staying for dinner mister, you can't get out of this family that quickly." She says and laughs. Alaina laughs beside me and gives me an apologetic look. "K, looks like I'm staying," I say which makes Alaina laugh a little more.
"Come on I want to show you something." Alaina says and makes me get my shoes back on. It's like 3:00, raining, and she wants to go outside. One strange girl. "Come on. Hey, can you climb trees?" She asks and runs into the rain.
"Kind of, why?" I ask and run after her.
"Because this tree you can go all the way up and see everything." She says and starts to climb.
"You want to do this when it's thundering and lighting?" I ask and start to climb.
"Ya, we'll be fine. I go up here all the time and I've never gotten hurt...to bad." She says and continues to climb. How comforting, not. I look up and see she's at the top and I'm stuck at the middle. How did she get up there? As if she can hear me she says "Put your feet against the other tree and hands behind you to push yourself up." She says and watches as I do what she says. The tree that we are climbing has like five trees in one so there are branches everywhere. Once I make it up to her I sit on the branch that she's on because she tells me to.
"If you try to sit on the other branches they might drop." She says and looks out in the forests. "It's beautiful." She says and stares at the rain and trees.
"Yes." I say and stare at her. We stay up there for about 20 minutes, but then decide to go because we are cold and we are soaking wet.
"Ok, when you get to this point you have to jump and roll on the ground." She says and looks up at me.
"I'll watch, be careful." I say and make sure that I can see what she does.
"I've done this since I was little, you'll be fine." She says and jumps. When she hits the ground she goes in a ball and rolls. "See easy." She says and stands up. Her clothes have mud on them now, but she doesn't seem to care. When I get to the jumping part I get scared.
"That's a long jump." I say and look at her.
"Hey, just think of it as training. If you do it right then you won't get hurt." She says and waves for me to jump. One... Two... Three! I jump and roll, I roll right into her. She ends up rolling with me. When we stop she says, "I think I forgot to move." And laughs. She's half on me and half on the ground so when she laughs I can feel it in my chest.
"You think." I say and laugh with her. She gets up and helps me up.
"Come on it's freezing." She says and runs to another door.
"Why'd we go in this door?" I ask and look around. They have a washer and dryer in here and there is a ton of dirt on the ground.
"Because my grandma says if I'm wet, dirty, or bringing dirty things in she doesn't want it upstairs, so we have to go through the back door." She says and walks into a room. The room has a ton of pictures, snow globes, and lots of blankets and pillows.
"Is this your room?" I ask surprised by all of the girly things she has.
"Ya." She says and hands me a towel. "Try to dry off with that. I'm going to change. I'll be right back and if one of my snow globes are broken or moved I'll break your fingers." She says and goes to the bathroom. Kay don't touch the snow globes, got it.
Once I'm as dry as I can get I start to look at her pictures. There are a ton of her and her dad. He never has a good smile in them, which makes me laugh. She has a lot of pictures with her family and very few with her friends. Then I find a picture of her with someone in a drawer. I can see the fake smile she puts on for each picture. The guy she's with looks like he's drunk in most of them. I want to look at more of them, but I hear the bathroom door open. Quickly I put them back and look like I was just looking at her snow globes.
"Don't touch." She says and comes in smiling. I force a smile at her and put my hands up. "Did that towel help with anything?" She asks and looks at my clothes. Her hair is in a messy bun which makes her look even more beautiful than she already is and it's harder not to stare at her.
"Kind of, but not a lot," I say and look at my clothes.
"Kay, I have guy sweatpants that might fit you." She says and goes in her closet.
"Why do you have guy pants?" I ask and look in her closet.
"Because they're comfortable, have pockets, and nice for when I want to wear a lot of layers." She says and pulls out a pair of black guy sweatpants.
"I'll try them on." I say and grab them. I walk to the bathroom. It's small but has a nice light purple color to it. I pull off my wet jeans and slip the pants on. There a little short, but they will do. I walk back into her room.
"Do they fit?" She asks and looks down.
"Ya, just a little short." I say and show her my ankles.
"They work right?" She asks and looks at me.
"Yeah." I say and hear her grandma say to come upstairs.
"My grandma is getting you a shirt from Rick." She says and laughs.
"Ok." I say and laugh with her. When we get upstairs her grandma smiles.
"This one should work." She says and hands me it.
"Thanks." I say and change into it. "Wear should I put my wet clothes?" I ask Alaina and she walks down stairs again. Up, down, up, down.
"They go on the clothes line." She says and points up to the string that's hanging across the ceiling.
"How do you reach it?" I ask because I have to extend my arm all the way to get my shirt up.
"I go on the washer and jump." She says and glares at me.
"It was just a question," I say and put my hands up surrendering.
"Right." She says sarcastically. She goes into her room and I go and get my pants to hang them.
"Your grandparents are cool," I say and sit next to her.
"Ya, there awesome, but overprotective and want to get to know everyone I bring over." She says and then I hear thunder again. Alaina jumps which startles me from her sudden movement.
"Just thunder," I say and bump her shoulder.
"I know, I just don't like loud noises." She says and turns towards me. "Want to play a game?" She asks and grabs her cards.
"Sure, I don't know many games, but if you can teach them to me I'll play," I say and watch her shuffle cards. She can do the bridge thing too.
"This is a short game. It's called 52 pick up." She says and smiles at me. "Want to play?" She asks me.
"Sure how do you play?" I ask and she throws all the cards at me.
"Know you pick them all up." She says and laughs at me.
"Haha I get it." I say and start to pick up the cards.
"I just had to see if you would fall for it." She says and helps me pick up the cards. "Ok this is a real game, it's called speed. Have you heard of it?"
"No, don't have a clue," I say and wait for her to tell me how it works.
"Ok the point of the game is to get ride of your cards the fastest." She says and starts to explain.
Grandma's P.O.V.
"He seems nice." Not like that Hunter son of a bitch. I say, but leave out the Hunter part.
"Ya, I see how he looks at her and that's how I looked at you when I meet you," Rick says and smiles at me. Always the romantic.
"Then they should be perfect," I say and peck him on the lips. He smiles at me and works on his laptop. I start to cook the Chicken Alfredo when I look out my window and see that the streets are flooded. "Looks like Taylor is staying the night," I say and Rick looks out the window.
"I guess, but on the couch, not in her room." He says and stands up.
"Of course she's only 16," I say and laugh as he walks down the stairs.
Alaina's P.O.V.
"No, no, if there is a ten you can lay a ten, nine or a jack. Remember one above one below and the same number." I say as he tries to get ride of his cards. My Grandpa knocks on the door. "Hey, Grandpa, what's up?" I ask and look at him.
"The streets are flooded so you're going to have to stay tonight. You can sleep on the couch down here." He says and smiles at me, but gives a weird look at Taylor.
"K, thanks for telling us. Bye grandpa." I say and he leaves the door.
"Great, I'm glad it's a Sunday tomorrow," Taylor says and starts to play the game.
We play about five games before my grandma says it's time to eat. "Coming, Gram." I say and we put our cards down. "Should I give you one less card?" I ask him because I keep winning and then he only has one card left in his hand.
"You're cheating, you give me extra cards." He says and bumps me in the shoulder.
"Do not." I say and bump him back.
"Do too."
"Do not."
"Do too."
"Children what are you talking about?" My grandma asks and smiles at me and then Taylor.
"He's complaining because he lost every time he played me in speed," I say and smile at Taylor.
"She gives me extra cards so I can't beat her." He claims and we sit down.
"Whatever makes to feel better," I aruge and laugh at him.
"It does." He says and looks down, but smiles.
"Ya she's the best at that game." My grandpa says and sits down.
"K hope you like Chicken Alfredo because there's a lot of it." My grandma says and sets the pan on the hot pad, that's in the middle of the table.
"Ummmm. Grandma, it smells great." I say and she sits down.
"One of my favorite meals." Taylor says and takes a deep breath.
"Ya, it's one of Alaina's favorites too." My grandma says and starts to put the food on her plate.
"Top five meals?" Taylor asks me.
"My moms special dinner, tater tot casserole, my dad's spaghetti and sloppy joey's, and chicken Alfredo." I say with my mouth watering. "What about you?" I ask as my grandma hands me the spoon for the Alfredo.
"Chicken Alfredo, this dish my mom used to make with fish, lasagna, pizza, and bubble pizza." He says and I hand him the spoon.
"Oh, ya bubble pizza is delicious," I say remembering when my friend's mom made it for me.
We all talk about random things and make jokes throughout dinner. When everyone is done I grab my grandparents plates and put them in the dishwasher. Taylor grabs his and mine. "Thanks, but I could have grabbed my own plate," I say and smile at him.
"I know, but I don't want to be stuck with both of them." He says and smirks at me.
"And I thought you were being nice." I say and shake my head at him.
"Maybe it was both." He says and closes the dishwasher door.
"Maybe," I say and turn to walk back to the dining room, but Taylor grabs my hand.
"That cut doesn't look much better." He says and lets go of my hand to look at my cut. He touches it with his hand.
"Ow, warn me before you do that, would you," I say and move backwards. I wonder if my grandparents notice it? I hope not, I mean there's only a little that sticks out from my hair.
"What's taking so long kids?" We hear my grandmother ask.
"Coming gram." I say and start walking.
"There you are. Do you want to help Taylor get set up downstairs?" She asks.
"Sure. Come on." I say and turn to Taylor. He starts walking behind me as we head down stairs. "In that closet, there are pillows at the top can you get one?" I ask and go to grab the blankets.
"Yup." I hear him say.
"K here is two blankets. Do you think you will need more, it can get cold?" I ask and he shakes his head.
"Nah, that'll be good." He says and grabs the blankets. "Hey, I'll be right back." He says and runs up the stairs.
Taylor's P.O.V.
"Can I look where your medicine is?" I ask Alaina's grandma.
"Yes, and I want to talk to you." She says and walks to their upstairs bathroom. I follow her nervously. "She joined the group didn't see?" She says and shuts the door. She already knows, at least that's what I thought, so why is she asking me? Just in case Greg didn't tell her I make up like I don't know.
"I don't know what you're talking about," I say, but she doesn't believe me.
"That's why she has that cut and you're her partner aren't you? Don't lie to me I already know about the place." She says in a stern voice.
"Yes. How do you know?" I ask curiously.
"I know Alaina's dad worked there and that's how he died." She says and lowers her voice.
"Who told you?" I don't know who would tell her about his death, that's not something that's ever really disclosed. And normally it's a lie because most of the family doesn't know about the organization, but it doesn't happen very often. Once someone is too injured or old, they have to leave or be out of the field work.
"Greg. He's close to our family. She doesn't remember when he came over because she was so young, but he was like a brother to Alaina's dad." She says, I know some of the things she's saying because Greg told me her dad worked there, but the other stuff I didn't know. "He didn't train Alaina to join to the Shadows, but he figured that she might end up in it because he was in it. He made me and Greg promise that we made sure she was safe and I'm assuming he put you with her because he believes you can protect her, so you better make sure that my granddaughter always comes back to me." She says and looks me dead in the eyes.
"I will." She nods her head, and then I ask, "Can I please look through the medicine now?" Trying to lighten the mood a little.
"Oh, yes." She says and moves so I can look.
"Do you have rubbing alcohol?" I ask and find the hydrogen peroxide.
"Ya, it's in that tan bottle." She says and points to it.
"Thanks, and umm...I'll always bring her back," I say and before she can say anything else I walk downstairs. "Alaina?" I ask and walk into her room.
"Ya." She says and turns around. She changed into pj's. She's has sweatpants and a baggy shirt on.
"Clean the cut." I say and wave one of the bottles.
"Ugh, fine. I'm coming." She says and follows me to the bathroom.
"Do you have cotton balls?" I ask and she goes in the cupboard under the sink.
"Ya." She says and sounds disappointed.
"Hey, the cut could get worse and it will hurt more if we don't keep cleaning it," I say and grab the cotton balls. She nods her head and hops onto the counter.
"Told you I could do it." She says and sits pretzeled legged.
"This counter is made for you though. It's only 3ft tall." I say and she hits me on the arm.
"It's normal size thank you very much." She says and crosses her arms.
"You are most certainly welcome," I say and she glares at me. After the cut is cleaned and we talk a little on the couch we decide to go to bed.
"See ya tomorrow. Oh and my grandparents wake up super early so if you hear them try to block it out." I nod my head at her and she walks to her room. I get comfortable and go to sleep.
Alaina's P.O.V.
I wake up and hear the thunderstorm is still going. What time is it? I look over at my clock and see it's 5 in the flipping morning. Go back to sleep. I tell myself, but I feel wide awake. After I sit in my bed for about 20 minutes I decide to get up and get ready. I take a longer shower and leave my hair down.
Once I get in my room I grab my sketchbook and look up google images. I find this really cool flower that I can shade. I turn my music on and start to do the out line of my flower. I start and get into a zone where all I hear is my music and my focus is all on the paper. K just turn a little. That needs to be darker and-
"Alainaaa?" I hear someone say my name. My head pops up startled.
"Ya, sorry. I was zoning out. What's up?" I ask Taylor and put my pencil down.
"Just wondering what you're doing." He asks and grabs my paper. "This is really good." He says staring at it. "Do you draw a lot?" He asks, and looks at me this time.
"Ya, since I was around 11, not long, but long enough for me to learn some cool tricks." I say and grab my paper out of his hand.
"I'm just gonna watch how this works." He says and kneels down so he can see, but yet give me room. When I look at the clock it says 7:42. It took a little to draw, but it looks pretty good, just a few more touch ups and it should be finished.
"There done," I say and write the year on the paper and hand it to Taylor.
"Wow, great job, wish I could do this."
"Thanks, it's not too hard." I say and put the picture where the rest of my drawing are.
"That is hard, you made a realistic flower with a pencil and paper." He says getting up and stretching.
"If you say so. Today, I don't know about you, but I need to get a lot of things done. So do you think we should go to the place after we eat?" I ask and put my pencil and eraser away.
"Ya, I guess." He says and lays on my floor.
"Tired?"
"Not really, just don't want to move." He says and looks at me.
"Come on, we need to put the blankets away and the pillow," I say and grab his hand to help him up.
"Fine, you put the pillow away and I'll put the blankets away." He says and smiles at me.
"Not going to happen. Vise versa." I say and grab the blankets. They were already folded, sweet. I put them in my closet and walk back out. "K, let's get breakfast." I say and start to go to the stairs.
"Race ya." He says and runs ahead of me.
"Crap," I mumble and run up after him. He trips on the rug and I race to the top. "Ya, I beat you even though you cheated." I say and dance around. He goes up the last step.
"Only because I tripped."
"Karma for trying to cheat," I say and walk into the kitchen. My grandma is knitting in her chair in the living room smiling at me. "Morning Granma," I say and pour a bowl of cereal.
"Morning, Granpa had to go to church early today."
"K, we are going to eat and then I'm going to have to go to my class. Is that ok?" I ask and sit at the table.
"Sure have fun. If you can come I have a curling game tonight." She says.
"I'll try." I say and turn to her. Taylor sits down next to me.
"Your grandma's in curling?" He asks and takes a bite of the raisin bran.
"Ya, she loves the game," I say and start eating my cereal. We eat in silence, but it's not awkward. After we are done eating we rinse the bowls out and put them in the dishwasher.
"Granma, were leaving," I say.
"K, hope to see you soon." She says and I close the door. When we go outside the rain isn't that bad, but there is mud everywhere. I hop into Taylor's car. He turns the music up.
"Why do you listen to this crap?" I ask and he looks over at me confused. "Can I put my playlist on?" I ask knowing not to mess with other people's music.
"Sure." He says. I grab my phone and my charger. Once it's plugged in the first song comes on. Immortal by Evanescence. "You like this type of music? I thought you would like the other crap that most girls like." He asks surprised.
"I'm not like most girls, I like Linkin Park, Evanescence, The Script, Guns and Roses, Miranda Lambert and a ton of other artists," I say and nod my head to the music.
