Chapter 25
Damion Peterson- New York, New York
3:20 AM EST
The van stopped in front of his building, but no one got out of the van and only sat there idle as if they knew that he was watching them from the balcony of his apartment room.
Damion paused and took a swig of his cigarette while he looked at the van, and there was this sense of urgency that he had to go down there and see what was up with the van and why something wanted him to go there.
He finished the cigarette and watched as two men got out of the van, and one of the men started to make his way to the door while the other one looked up and met his gaze before he gestured for him to go down to the front of the building.
Damion scoffed a laugh and rolled his eyes. He didn't say a word and didn't move from his spot. He kept his gaze on the man that was staring at him, not knowing what to do or what to say, especially since these were men that "felt" familiar to him as if he had come across them a long time ago, which was why he had been on the run in the first place.
But this time he was caught, and even he had no idea how to escape from them...
Damion sighed and moved a hand through his hair and across his face before he shook his head. "Are you going to be standing there all morning?" he asked the man that was still by the van. "What the fuck do you want with me? I don't have shit that will make you happy."
The man gestured for him to come down again and then made a signal for a phone call. He didn't say a word as if he couldn't speak to him, and Damion rolled his eyes and scowled.
"If I come down for that phone call, will you leave me the fuck alone?" he asked. "I am tired of moving around because I have some randos following me every month or so, and I am tired of trying to figure out why you want me when I can't do shit."
The man didn't say a word and gestured for him to come down stairs for the phone call. He didn't seem to care that Damion didn't move from his spot and just continued to wait for him.
The hair on the back of Damion's neck stood at attention, and a small shiver went down his spine when a thought occurred to him.
Did they know that he was able to control fire from his fingertips..?
"Do you know something about me?" he asked the man, not giving him any indication that he was able to do something that not a lot of people would be able to do.
The man nodded in confirmation and continued not to say a word, and the dread turned a little bit to curiosity because of that nod.
Damion huffed and rolled his eyes, pursing his lips in annoyance. "Fine, then I will be right down," he said before he walked inside of his apartment building and locked the balcony door. He grabbed his bag from where he had it and started to make his way to the door where he had shoes waiting for him.
The door to his bedroom opened and the girl walked out in one of his shirts and shorts, much to his annoyance. "Hey, Babe?" she asked and rubbed her eyes while she yawned and looked at him with a sleepy expression on his face. "Why are you out of bed? Where are you going?"
Damion rolled his eyes and scowled, pressing his lips into a thin line. "It doesn't matter," he said and started to put on his shoes. "I am going for a walk. I think you should get going too because I don't want you in my apartment any longer."
"But why don't you just go to bed? Everything is closed, or are you just running away from your life again?"
"It doesn't matter," Damion said and finished tying his shoes before he stood. "I have to go somewhere else with someone else that doesn't include you. You can see yourself out, but I do recommend grabbing your own clothes and not mine because those clothes are staying here."
"And where are you going?" she asked and cocked her head to the side while she studied him. "Does this have to deal with the men that are outside your apartment building?"
Damion paused and narrowed his eyes while he looked at her. "What did you say?" he asked, and the hair on the back of his neck stood at attention. "How do you know about the men that are there?"
"Because I work with them," she said and shrugged, looking nonchalant. She started to walk to the front door so that she could open it for the man that didn't wait by the car. "I am also someone that doesn't mind using a male's needs against them, meaning I didn't mind having sex with you or pretending to be asleep in your bed after we were done." She flashed him a small smirk and a wink, and Damion stared at her with wide eyes filled with shock and nervousness. "I hope that you enjoyed it because I have to admit that I did enjoy it, too."
"What the fuck?" he asked. "So are you saying that you have been spying on me for a while now?"
"Not me in particular but my group has," she said. She opened the front door and gestured for the man that hadn't been outside watching the balcony to go in before she closed and locked the door behind him. "He's a part of my group and so is the one that was watching the balcony."
"And why have you been watching me?" he asked. "Don't you think that is a little weird?"
"Eh." She shrugged. "It would be considered weird if we don't know what you are trying to hide, which is that you have powers. You can control fire and do not need a lighter to light a cigarette but do it so that no one knows that you have powers besides those that work for a group that wants to protect you and the others that are the same but different like you in one shape or another."
The man that was in the apartment room pulled out a phone when it started to ring and handed it over to Damion, and Damion looked at the phone before he looked at the girl with a blank look on his face, not knowing what was happening next.
The girl looked at the phone and smiled before she looked at him. "That is your future calling you," she said. "My suggestion says that you should answer it because there are others that are going to try to get to you, and these guys are not kind at all unlike the ones you have with you now."
You have my word...
