Two more minutes until lunch. I can do this, I can do this. I sit in my seat as I fight the hunger growls coming from me. Finally the bell rang.
I got up and packed my stuff into my backpack, realizing that Metias was lecturing the teacher about something he said. Wasn't he suppose to be the student? I walked over to him grabbing him by the arm to pull him out of the room.
“No, listen to me Mr. Smith, the triangle's square root needs to be divide by 709!" I sigh at his lecture, and grab him by the ear. Which was quite hard because he's so much bigger than I am. Not in a bad way, but tall, and he deffinently has more muscle than me.
"Come on I'm starving!" I said. We walked down the hall toward our lunch room. We turned into the library and walked up to the librarian, Miss. Tammy. She looked up at us with her heavily eye shadowy eyes, and smiled. Then she bent down and pulled out a tray of food.
"These were the best looking sandwiches there was!" She exclaimed with a big smile. We grabbed our food and thanked her as we went to our table in the corner by the YA books.
Sadly we are like the only kids who come to the library anymore, and by doing so the librarian always makes sure we get the best food in the school. Of course we still pay like everyone else, but at least I'm not buying a nasty, old sandwich.
Well Metias and I have been best friends since forever. We always came to the library for lunch. I don't know why, but I guess neither of us liked the noise of the cafeteria. Anyways we're too big of nerds to not sit in the library.
You couldn't really tell Metias was a nerd though. He was muscular, but not body builder type more lean, and when ever we left town all the girls would drool over him. But he never cared to give the girls his attention. He would pretend he didn't notice.
Me on the other hand was the definition of nerdy. All of my clothes represents my fandoms, and I'm very smart. But my hair was always pretty. I loved doing my hair crazy, an in new ways.
So at lunch we would discuss how much fun it w be if we were a character in this or that book, or maybe we'd just read. As the first bell rang telling us that lunch was over we got up, thanked the librarian again, and walked out.
That's when we heard the first explosion. I quickly thought over everything that was going to happen this week in our small town. Since my mom and dad worked for some important business guys I learn a lot about the things that would happen in our little town. This was not one of them.
I looked over to Metias who looked very worried. I saw Miss. Tammy run out of the library. Metias and I walked over to the lobby doors and peered out. Our fire station was on fire. If you think about it, it was kinda ironic.
Then some kids started to scream and teachers came out of their classrooms to see what the commotion was about. I even saw a couple of girls crying in a corner.
Then a boy I didn't reconize reminded everyone that our police station just blew up. Thanks. So as everyone realized that our police station was in flames they started to freak out. Did this happen on purpose? I really hope not. I see Metias pull out his phone and check something, as mine made a beep noise notifying be about some news story. I pull it out.
According to some news station about twenty five small towns were bombed all across America. Then a map popped up on my screen. I studied it. It was a map showing all of the cities, including ours, that were under attack right now. More dots appeared on the screen. More towns attacked. I couldn't believe it. A terrorist attack? I shoved my phone back into my backpack, and look at Metias.
"We need to go." I grabbed his hand and ran out of the building. I needed to find my parents and Metias needed to find his little brother.
Then another bomb went off. Everyone's eyes trailed to where the sound came from. It looked like it was a gas station. I feel a sudden need to go faster. What if that gas station blows up even more?!
We ran across the street to the middle school, and we weren't the only kids trying to get to their cars, and siblings. I saw people running past us to get to the middle school. To the left of us I saw someone nearly get hit. I gasp and go faster.
Everything seemed normal at the middle school. I didn't really understand that. Metias and I ran into the school and into Metias's brothers class. He looked up at us confused.
“Uh, excuse me Mr. Jonathan we need James to leave with us." Metias said in between breaths.
“Why, if I may ask?" Mr. Jonathan questioned. Metias walked up to him, and whispered. It was probably about the bombings.
“Oh dear." Then he grabbed his phone and called someone.
"We need to go now!" Metias stated. Then his little brother packed up his belongings and we left.
All of the teachers knew what happened to their parents, and Metias is almost 18, so if anyone asks if he's old enough to be a guardian of a young boy, everyone say yes. It helps that my parents are important people of our town, and that Metias is my bestfriend.
So we run out of the building and back to the high school. People were still scrambling to leave the parking lot. We jump into my '69 convertible Cadillac. Good thing I hate parking by other people! I park in the back of the school where there's another way out not many students know about. Nobody was using it besides the teachers.
I drove as fast as I dared, not wanting to hit anyone. It seemed like the bombings had taken people's brains, because some of them are just standing in the middle of the road. I can see that people are already starting to loot stores.
Soon enough we were out of the school zone, and traffic wasn't that bad. I pulled into my drive way about five minutes later.
“That's when we ran into the class to get you." Metias just finished explaining what was going on to his brother, James.
We jumped out, and run up to my front door. When I realised my backpack was in the back seat still, I ran back for it asking Metias to get the door.
He pulled the spare key out of its hiding space and unlocked the door. I'm surprised he doesn't have a copy of the key yet. Bang! I turn around so fast. What was that? I saw James back away as fast as he could. He had blood on him. I ran up to him.
"Are you ok!?" He didn't respond. I look up at Metias. He was clutching his stomach as if he was having a stomach ache. The smell of blood was poisoning the air around us. I turn him toward me.
Metias was already pale, but looking at him now he was almost the color of a sheet. Not good. I look back at his stomach. It was his blood, not James'. Metias has been shot. I look back at his face. He opened his mouth and all that came out was,
“Lacy I'm a..."
Then he fell towards me. I caught him in my arms. As I started to cry, I dragged him into my house, staining my white carpet red. I yell at James to go get the medical stuff from the bathroom. As well as Metias, James new this house like it was his. He ran to go get it.
I looked back at Metias. He was very pale, kinda like a vampire. If it was any other situations than this, he would love to look like a vampire. I ripped off his shirt, and ran into the kitchen to get a damp wash cloth. Running back to him I tried to clean up the wound area.
My babysitter as a child was a doctor and she taught me everything that a little girl didn't need to know, but now her teachings were finally paying off. I cleaned the wound as much as I could.
With perfect timing, James ran in with the first aid kit. I started to open it, when a bloody hand grabbed my wrist. I look at who it belonged to. Metias. He gave me a look I've never seen on him before, even when we would role play our favorite scenes from books, and movies. Then he shook his head. He knew he was a goner, but I wasn't giving up. I took out a big wad of bandages and gently wrapped it around him. His hand fell from my wrist.
He motioned for his brother to come to him, then he whispered something to him. I couldn't hear what ever it was. I looked at the blood on my hands. How did this happen? Wasn't this just a normal day?
I look back at him, and his brother was crying. Metias was gone. The only thing I could think about was that Metias and I was supposed to be graduating this year, that he never had a proper girlfriend, and his little brother had no family left.
I cried right then and there. After I finished having a melt down I realized that someone had shot Metias in my house. Where was that person now? I got up and grabbed a knife from the kitchen. My only weapon, besides a vase in the hall.
I walked throughout the whole house looking for my best friend's killer. I screamed. No I didn't fine the killer but I did find my parents.
They looked like they were grabbing some papers, and finishing getting ready for work. My mother laid face down in the bed, my father on the ground by the window. I ran up to them to check for a pulse just in case.
They had several bullet wounds throughout their whole bodies. I threw up right there next to my dead father. Sorry dad. More tears came poring out of me.
I realised the window was open, and the screen was pushed out. That's probably how the killer got out. I ran down the stairs.
Then I remembered the dog. He's locked up in the basement because it's cooler for him. I ran downstairs and opened the basement door and my dog leaped up onto me. I reached for his collar and leach, and put them on. When I turned around I noticed the door was all scratched up.
“Good boy" I told him. I ran back upstairs with the dog. James looked at me through teary eyes. I kneeled down toward him.
"We need to go. We need to find a safe place to stay. Do you want to go to your house?"
"No, that place scares me." He sobbed.
"Then we're going to the city! We're going to take a trip there ok?" Without an answer he stood up. I grabbed my backpack and his hand, whistled for my dog, and walked out of the house. Little did I know that was the last time I would get to see my house again.
