Chapter 4

Sann's POV

As Christopher and Sann got closer to the commander's tent, Sann started feeling something in the depths of her stomach. Emotions that these humans were so familiar with was turning out to be much more complicated and unsettling than Sann would have thought.

Her best guess was that she was nervous. That's why she felt like her stomach was restless. As if Christopher felt her uneasiness, he turned his head to look at her over his shoulder. "Don't worry. Commander just wants to meet you, nothing more. If you are to stay with us until we get back to town, he needs to know who you are." Christopher explained.

Sann looked away for a moment. Who was she? She didn't even remember. How could she explain what she didn't know to the commander.

"I don't remember who I am." Sann said in reply. An ache, rooted deep in her chest started sprouting back up.

Luckily, Christopher seemed to know that would be a problem and had thought ahead for a solution. He slowed down his step and leaned slightly in to whisper to Sann as they walked. "I will speak for you. I will tell the commander that I found you in the forest and a group of smugglers were attacking you. A blow to the head during their attack on you will explain your memory loss." Christopher said.

Then he added, "We can leave out the part where you have fallen out of the sky and that you are..." he stopped to think for a minute but did not finish his sentence. "Let's just not indulge any information that would complicate things." He paused for a moment, shook his head and muttered, "I don't even know what to do with it."

Sann looked at Christopher from the corner of her eye and licked her lips, suddenly more aware of the fact that she was in enemy territory with no allies. "What would happen if more people found out about..." she didn't think she needed to finish her sentence.

She looked around at the other humans in the camp. The same ones she was looking at with curiosity, now seized her up to determine what they were capable of. Christopher looked straight ahead as they marched on and simply replied with, "Let's not find out."

Everyone they passed looked at Sann with inquisitive eyes. All of them looked all the more intimidating now that they had potential to be her enemies. She squared off her shoulders and lifted her chin. She wasn't accepting a defeat to a battle that hadn't begun. The only one that wasn't looking at Sann was the human next to her. It hadn't occurred to her before but the only one who knew of her real origin might just as be reproachful as her.

"Are you scared of me Christopher?" Sann asked as she tried not to notice every movement and every sound going around the camp passing by.

Christopher stopped walking abruptly and Sann stopped with him, her heart beat increasing for a danger she couldn't see yet. But he only turned towards her and looked into her eyes. "Should I be afraid milady?" He asked but he really didn't look like he needed an answer.

Sann tilted her head ever so slightly, just enough to see the last lights of the sun being reflected from the high of his cheekbones. "I don't know." She answered in what she hoped was a non threatening answer.. She herself wasn't really certain what she could do or whether humans should be afraid of her.

Christopher looked back at her for another moment, looking like he was considering something and then nodded as he seemed to come to a conclusion. "Well, if you do plan on hurting me at some point milady, I would kindly ask of you to give me ahead's notice." And then his mouth quirked up at its corner showing a glimpse of white teeth with amusement evident in his eyes.

It was hard to look away from his gaze as his smile infectiously spread to her face making her smile. Just like that, the tension she felt earlier lifted a bit from her shoulders, and she felt a bit more at ease looking at the familiar yet unknown human in front of her. She nodded. "I shall do my best."

Christopher's gaze focused on her smile and he held it there. Sann wondered if something was wrong. But before she could think more on it, Christopher turned and kept on walking. Sann started walking with him.

After passing a dozen or more so tents, they finally arrived at the enormous tent. Two humans were positioned before the entrance and they were wearing surcoats with coat of arms embroidered on them.

It was two golden lions on a deep rich red. The nails and the tongues of the lions were a deep blue. The flags that were scattered here and there around the army camp suggested that this was the signia of their king.

Christopher nodded to the two humans standing guard. Their eyes centred on Sann's form. They seemed to be intently scrutinising her or making sure that she did not pose any threat.

When they were finally satisfied, both of them stepped aside to grant them entrance. Christopher walked in and Sann followed.

Inside of the tent was darker and it took a second for Sann to examine the interior. There was a big table in the middle of the room with maps and papers scattered on it. Weapons and two shields were to the left side and there seemed to be another room to the tent. To the right of the table, there was a parted section which Sann guessed was the commander's sleeping quarters.

Just then a man exited the sleeping quarters Sann was looking towards. He was older than Christopher, his dark hair had greys in them from old age but he still looked powerful and built. This must be the commander, Sann thought.

The commander's green inquisitive eyes found Sann's and stopped there. He walked over to them and stopped before Sann.

He bowed a little by the waist and said, "My Lady, my name is Alistair. I am the commander of this battle regiment. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance."

Commander Alistair straightened back up and looked into Sann's eyes. "What may I ask brought a beautiful lady like yourself to our camp?" He asked.

Sann could feel the man, Alistair, looking her up and down with an intense gaze. She was just about to speak when Christopher cut in, "I came across Lady Sann after our raid on the Dilston Castle. A group of smugglers had attacked her and she was unconscious. I brought her to the camp to be tended to. Milady doesn't remember much from her blow to the head."

Commander turned his head to Christopher like he hasn't realised he was there before he spoke up. "Of course you made the right choice in bringing the lady to the camp Sir Christopher." Then Alistair turned to Sann and said, "And my apologies for you to have been through this predicament Lady Sann. You can travel with our camp. We have invaded the area that has been assigned to us, we will be returning to our village in a weeks time. We can provide protection and provisions for you in the meantime."

"Thank you commander for your hospitality." Sann responded with a thank that wasn't faked. They didn't seem to be threatened by her so far and she wasn't greeted by hostility. She would travel with them and hope to figure out more on what to do with herself as the fog in her brain cleared up.

Commander Alistair smiled at her in return and said, "As to your living quarters..." he began but once again Christopher said interrupted.

"She can reside in my tent during the time of the travel commander. I have a spare tent and cot for myself." He said.

Commander seemed displeased by Christopher's suggestion. "Lady may be more comfortable staying here Sir Christopher at a commander's tent." He punctuated. "And there are armed guards stationed at my door to ensure her safety."

Christopher was looking right back at the commander like he wasn't content with that idea. Christopher turned his head and his warm brown eyes found Sann's golden ones.

"Maybe the Lady should decide where she wants to spend the remaining time of the travel." Christopher said.

Alistair nodded and agreed. "Very well. Lady Sann, where would you prefer to have your sleeping quarters?"

***************

Where do you think Sann is going to pick.

Who would you pick?

The commander

Or Sir Christopher?

The coat of arms of the Normandy was this:

I wanted to use the original one rather than to make one up.

No I was not too lazy to imagine a new one 😂

I just want some facts to be historically correct.

Anyways I hope you liked this chapter ☺️
