Chapter 24

"Abby? Where have you been? It's been almost a week!" Gema yelled from across her office. Abby couldn't decide whether or not it was a good idea to come back. She had heard that Gema was furious that Abby just up and left.

Abby put her bag on a hook, then took a black apron, tying it around her waist. Gema walked out of the office, ready to scold Abby. Ignoring her, Abby took a tray that had been filled with food, and walked out of the kitchen.

"I was expecting an answer, Abby! You disappear for a week then walk in like nothing ever happened."

There were muffled yells coming from the kitchen, but Abby drowned them out, serving the drunk cranks. After clearing the tray, she continued behind the bar, filling cups for the idiots that decided to show up.

At first, Abby came back here reluctantly, only because this is the only way she was going to be able to eat. By the time she got to the door, another reason came to mind. All of a sudden, she wanted one thing more than anything she'd ever wanted in her life. She wanted revenge.

Abby had changed over the time she had been gone. She let all of her anger build up inside, making her more aggressive and also violent. She wasn't the sweet, innocent girl that worked at The Broken Glass. She wasn't going to let anyone break her heart again.

Abby suddenly felt hands on her, turning her to face Gema. "Abby! I want an answer now! Why do you think you can just come back in here like you didn't just storm out for no reason?! And may I add that you left before closing, while there were still customers."

"Fine! It doesn't matter why I left, but I came back because I realized that I was wrong to storm out and I need this job." Abby quickly spit out, coming up with a half lie to satisfy Gema. She also tried to look weak, hoping that would earn her pity points. "Will you please let me have my job back?" Abby added, praying that Gema would listen.

"Well, no one else is gonna take it." she huffed. "Half pay." Gema took a glass that had been filled with beer, drank it, then threw it on the ground.

"Got it." Abby muttered. Gema left, and soon the place was filled with people.

Abby started towards the kitchen, forming a plan to show Cash he made the worst mistake possible. She paused at the door, her mind set. With a deep breath, she burst through the door, ready to fight if necessary.

"Cash I-" Abby started her rant, but cut herself off when she saw an unfamiliar, older man by the stove.

"I thought  Cash was the only cook here, who are you? And where's Cash?" Abby fired at the cook.

"One at time now." The cook teased, "First, my name is Brandon and you're right. Cash was the only cook, but now I'm am. Second, I don't know where this Cash kid is or what happened to him. Sorry."

"No, I need to talk to him. He needs to know he's not my whole life!" Abby  screamed out of frustration. She was almost looking forward to her little confrontation.

"I don't know if this helps, but he did leave some old, unsent letters in the drawer." Brandon told her moments before she almost ripped it out from underneath the counter.

She skimmed the letters as fast as humanly possible, then came up with a new solution. She had seen that all the letters were to one person. If she couldn't find Cash, someone else would have to pay.

Charlie.
