Chapter 43

"Oh great, a storm is coming," one guy grumbled in irritation. He and his pals started talking about the upcoming rainstorm. Sitting in her cage, Gidget heard someone whisper her name. Turning around, she wagged her tail when she saw Norman. "I knew you guys would come back for me," she remarked. Nodding his head, Norman whispered, "I'm going to get you out, just stay quiet."

Running as fast as he could, Tiberius could feel the wind picking up. The breeze had become a gust. His fur and feathers were pelted by cold wet raindrops. The griffin spotted the deer herd up ahead. The hunters were hot on their tails, speeding along on their motorbikes and jeeps. Gunshots rang through the air. Tiberius growled. They needed to be stopped.

"Guys, we better hurry. This looks like a bad storm," one man pointed out as he drove the jeep. He was keeping a wary eye on the darkening skies. Firing another round with his gun, the guy in the passenger seat sneered, "Scared of a little lightning you big baby?"

The jeep screeched to a halt.

"What is that?!" the driver exclaimed. All of the men were staring at a strange creature that stood before their vehicles. It blocked their path to the deer herd, who were watching from a safe distance. Lightning flashed and thunder roared overhead as the storm got worse. Everything was soaking wet by now. The men barely noticed as they watched the bizarre creature in front of them.

Sparks of lightning bristling through his fur and feathers, Tiberius was supercharged. He had enough electricity to light up an entire city. His eyes glowing blue, the griffin took a step forward. His growl was so loud it was like thunder. Every lash of his tail sent blue sparks flying. Spreading out his wings, the griffin hissed intimidatingly. Then he flapped his wings once, sending bolts of lightning towards the humans. Tiberius purposefully missed his shots, hoping he got his message across. And he did. The hunters drove away, their screams echoing into the night. Satisfied, the griffin dipped his head to the deer herd before taking to the sky.

"Do you guys hear something?" a young teen asked. Listening quietly, one of his companions remarked, "Sounds like screaming." The group watched in bewilderment as the rest of their group came racing by on their vehicles, screaming at the top of their lungs. "What's going on?!" one boy shouted. He didn't get an answer though. Instead, he heard the sound of clanging metal followed by a bark from the dog they had found. The group looked over at the cage.

"So much for a quiet escape," Gidget muttered, glaring at the cage door accusingly. "At least you're out of the cage," Norman commented. Gasping when he saw the humans looking at them, the young griffin cub cried, "Gidget run!" One of the boys whipped out his handgun and fired a shot. At the same time, a thundering roar shook the earth. The humans looked up to see a strange hybrid animal sparking with blue electricity charging at them. Screaming, they scrambled into their jeep and sped away. Landing in the meadow, Tiberius roared, "And stay out!"

"Tiberius," Gidget whimpered, "It's Norman."
