Chapter Two
I leave the building where I had just talked to the elders. I walk on the path that lead straight to my house. I enjoyed the fall breeze against my skin and the sound of the leaves rustling in the treetops. I almost forgot about reality in this calm peaceful enviroment. Almost. I walk up the steps and head into my house.
I walk straight to my room tear out a sheet of paper from my journal and write a list of things I think I will need on my first adventure out of the city. I had written:
A book of each encountered mutation and nonmutation.
A map of the surrounding environment.
A compass.
A notebook and several pens.
I folded the paper neatly and put it into an envelope walk outside and put it in the mailbox.
I walk back inside and pace waiting for my brother to arrive home. I was so nervous.
I had fallen asleep in a chair after about thirty minutes. I woke up to the door opening and closing several times and saw my brother walk in with his group of hunters.
"We were told to talk to you by the elders. What is it?" My brother asked, all their eyes fixated on me
I told them everything I knew about me being a navigator and what my job was and everything that applied to it. I told them that they were the ones I had chosen to be my guide.
"Let me get this straight. You are supposed to find new places to settle, find the source of the mutations and destroy it, and you don't have to obey any laws set by the elders?" My brother said.
"That's pretty much it", I respond. "We also leave in three days."
They just stand there confused. "Why three days?" Someone asks.
"That's what the elders said. We should be back in a week."
"Why did you choose us?" My brother inquired.
I respond, "Because I trust y'all. We've known each other since we started school. Who better to choose?"
They all mumble in understanding and start to leave. I walk up to my room and flop down on by bed. As soon as my head hits the pillow I fall asleep.
My dreams were invaded by nightmares of the future. I dreamed of everyone dieing, everyone but me dieing, and just me dieing. I woke up with my dreams still running through my mind.
I turn over in my bed and look at my clock, 4:17am. I groan and sit up. I rub the sleep from my eyes and get out of bed. I look around in the dark room and turn on the lights. I turn quickly to my left but see nothing but my desk and chair. I then thought to myself
I could of sworn I saw something standing there....
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
I walk out the door at seven in the morning to get the mail and see that the elders sent me what I had requested. I walk back inside set the mail that didn't belong to me on the living room table and went straight to my room. I walked over to my desk open the box and pull out three books, The Mutations and What they do, How to Kill the Mutations, and How to Survive Out of the City.
I open The Mutations and What they do and start reading.
I finish the book nearly two hours later. I knew that mutations where dangerous but I now know the true degree of their power and how deadly they cruelly are.
One in particular caught my attention. It was called The Slinjar. It was a silent and deadly assassin. The only way you would see it was as a shadow out of the corner of your eye. They will stalk their prey for weeks if they must. They aren't known for giving up easily. If you manage to escape one it will seek you out and and it will find you. Very few actually have manages to kill a Slinjar. The ones who did never killed them unscathed. They usually were on the brink of death when the beast was slain. If you killed one, you were considered a legend.
I freeze at the sound of the city alarm going off. My mother rushes in my room grabs me by the arm and yanks me through the house to the basement...
