Summer lies awake on the cold hard floor. She is too cold and uncomfortable to sleep. She turns onto her side, facing away from Dakota. They are sleeping in sleeping bags, but both are sharing a giant blanket to help with warmth. A fire honestly sounds nice right now.
Dakota shifts and moves closer to Summer to warm up. Summer sits up and looks around, trying to make out the guys' figures. Brian is lying on his left side, as he obviously can't lie on the right. She sees him turn onto his other side and he immediately cries out in pain and sits up.
"Brian, what did you do?" Summer asks. Brian looks over to where her voice is coming from.
"D-did I wake you up? I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to," He apologizes.
"No, no you're fine Brin. I have yet to fall asleep honestly." Brian grips his shoulder and grits his teeth. "Here, why don't we go out and try to find some wood to burn. It might help us sleep." Summer crawls out of the blankets and walks over to help Brian up.
The two walk out of the shelter before stopping. "Wait, we need something that will help us keep track of where we are going. If we get lost, we are screwed." Both kids think for a moment before Brian looks down and sees their footprints.
"We leave tracks in the snow."
"But what if it snows again? Our tracks will be covered up." Brian looks up at the sky.
"Doesn't look like it will snow for a while. We'll be fine."
Brian and Summer have been walking around for a while now, talking and joking about their lives before the apocalypse.
Summer jumps in surprise as she feels something cold travel down her back. She looks over at Brian, who has broken out into a laughing fit. Summer quickly crouches down and grabs a handful of snow. She molds it into a ball and tosses it at Brian, hitting him in the chest. Brian acts like it was a bullet and grabs his chest before falling backward.
"You killed me! Nooooooooo!" Summer bursts out laughing and continues to do so until she couldn't breathe.
After the two had settled down, Brian gets up and he grits his teeth and grabs his shoulder as pain emerges from it once more.
"Did I do that? I'm so sorry, I did-"
"No, you're fine. I probably did this when I fell." He can feel something warm in his hand. Oh no.
"Maybe we should start collecting some wood and head back. We don't know how long it will be until the sun rises," Summer suggests.
Both teens walk around collecting sticks for what feels like forever. Brian couldn't carry any of it because of his shoulder, so Summer is carrying it all.
Brian suddenly feels lightheaded and his knees give out. He collapses to the ground. He lifts his hands and looks at them, noticing they are violently shaking.
"Su-Summer!" Summer turns around, seeing her friend on the ground. She drops the armful of sticks and runs over to him. She kneels in front of him and grabs his hand that is completely covered in blood. Her eyes widen and she looks back up at him.
"Why didn't you tell me your wound reopened?" She asks.
"I-I didn't want to hold us back. I'm s-sorry. I should have told you ear-earlier." Summer's eyes flicker back and forth from his shoulder to his face. She can barely make out his face in the darkness of the night, but she can tell he's extremely pale. She helps him up and puts his unhurt arm around her shoulder. Brian takes one step before collapsing to the ground again, this time taking Summer with him. He's too weak. Great.
She thought about picking him up and carrying him, but because they have traveled so far from the shelter, she wouldn't be able to carry him for that long. What do I do? I can't just leave him here!
She glances down at the snow surrounding them and becomes alert when she notices it is caked in blood.
"Brian?!" His breathing starts to slow down and he closes his eyes. "Brian, please! I know you can get through this!" He doesn't respond. Summer shakes him a bit. "Come on!" She puts two of her fingers on the side of his neck to check his pulse. Nothing. "No, no, no, Brian... please!" She cries quietly. She looks at his shoulder, seeing a pool of blood being soaked up by the snow, and more blood is gushing out by the second.
She rests her arms on her friend's chest. She puts her head down and sobs. She feels so guilty for not being able to help. She and Brian have been really good friends since middle school, and seeing him die right in front of her from something she could have helped stop, makes her feel like he died because of her. "I am so, so sorry Brin. I really am. I wish I could have helped. I really do."
Summer opens her eyes and looks at the sky, seeing the sun is starting to rise. Her face feels extremely numb from the cold. She had fallen asleep on Brian accidentally. I'm very lucky no zombies came and attacked me. It was a higher risk as she was sleeping on a dead body.
Quickly, she stands up and examines her longtime friend, noticing his skin is as pale as the snow. His shoulder has stopped bleeding. She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath. "Goodbye, Brian. You will be greatly missed," She whispers before turning and running back towards the temporary shelter.
