Chapter 5
Mia dreamed about the unnatural, not the one she wanted with mysteries and thrills that sent chills down your spine, but her dad instead. Normally she didn't dream about her absentminded father. Normally it was about her mother and sometimes about the lost future they were supposed to have.
About the new school and new friends that she would have had, about what their group would have been called.
About her dog that she wanted. It was a short haired one that they looked forward to adopting. She played with him once and he seemed the best for following orders and guarding her things, that's what she wanted a dog for anyway.
But most importantly the location was quite assuage. Camping out on the beach with waves lapping against the shore repeatedly seemed like everyone's dream! In the small city she lived in, THAT was a dream only rich folks could have.
Well now she had that dream. She was living on an island surrounded by water that was apparently a huge tourist attraction in the summer. But her dream was only 50% fulfilled, mom wasn't there and dad wasn't exactly like her. He was strict and mean. He never believed that she could dance, that she could draw, that she could be famous like the other girl gang on TV. He always said that "growing up to being what she wanted to be" was a myth. It wouldn't happen. EVER.
In her dream, dad loved her.
"Nice catch Mia, that was very good."
"Aw, don't mention it dad, that was nothin." She clutched the brand new baseball in her mitt, then readied herself, and threw it back.
As always he caught it. "You tried to catch your old man off guard huh?" He said, smirking. The sun in his dark black shades.
She bent over and leaned forward, close to the newly trimmed grass that smelled strongly of treatment. The neighborhood treatment was something the whole neighborhood funded for no reason, it was just something to be a part of...it was basically where some random man would come and put fertilizer on the grass, that stuff smelled badly at first until it settled into the ground, creating some yellow ball thingies all over the place. She guessed it was supposed to make the grass stronger? Healthier? Better in some way?
Either way it smelled horribly! (Because duh!) She peered down at her Hello Kitty shorts and pink flip flops, she also wore a grey hoodie because since the dew was still sitting atop the many blades of grass, it was still very very cold. He caught her off guard and the ball thumped her in the head.
"OW!? What the h-e-double hockey sticks is wrong with you!! I wasn't even paying attention!" She breathed, rubbing the imaginary lump on her head.
"A game doesn't wait for you to pay attention, remember." He said with that dumb fatherly grin of his. "Now Mia, throw it back before I go to work."
She obeyed and threw it right back, thus continuing their little game. However, that was just a dream, meaning none of it was true and wouldn't possibly ever be real anytime sooner. In fact, it should have been her mom throwing the ball back and forth...
But you can't correct dreams with more dreams, the one you have or had, will always be the real one. Or like the saying her mom always said-"An original is always worth more than a copy."
And on that note, the dream was over.
