Chapter 20

Mason wasn't one for parties, and he definitely was not a fan of celebrating the New Year.

Although he trusted Dean, Mason felt incredibly uncomfortable and out of place in this house party which he had invited them to; it felt like every second person could knock him out cold with a single punch if he made a single wrong move.

To make matters worse, Sky had decided this was the perfect opportunity to get drunk for the first time since she'd turned 18, so Mason, who was still underage, was stuck by himself like a stiff piece of board against a wall.

How had he been dragged into this?

Mason bristled as a couple crashed hard into the wall next to him, their tongues down each other's throat in a flurry of lust. He tried his hardest not to pull a face of disgust as he made to leave, but was surprised to find his way blocked by Sky who had just returned, and who was watching the couple with a curious interest.

"Mason, what are they doing?" she asked him, tilting her head to the side a bit like a dog who holds curiosity for something.

"They, ah—They're kissing," he said awkwardly as he tried to steer himself and Sky away from the couple that were now against the wall behind him.

"But—I just thought that kisses were light. Like a—" she used her hands to demonstrate what she meant – holding her one palm vertically between their faces and using the fingers on her other hand to lightly tap her palm. "Like that," she said as though that explained everything, dropping her hands back down at her sides as she shot Mason a confused look.

He couldn't believe he was having this conversation with Sky. "Sky, there are different kinds of kisses," he responded, his cheeks flushing slightly as he averted his eyes. "What they were doing was a more experienced kind of kiss; what you're describing is more a..." he paused momentarily as he looked for the right words. "A first, simple kiss."

Sky was focused on him with an honest and fervent curiosity. "Different kisses, ok... Can you show me?"

"I—What?" he asked, a bit taken aback by her words. "You want me to show you?"

"Yeah," she said innocently, bringing her hands back up into the previous positions between their faces and repeating her previous motion. "So this is a simple kiss. What's the next one?"

Mason swallowed hard. "Sky, it's kind of hard to explain it to you with only hand movements," he said, averting his eyes after he found himself staring at her lips. Had he been drinking alcohol? He discreetly smelled the contents of his glass.

Nope, definitely lemonade.

Was it the atmosphere? He looked around at the many couples who were in different stages of lust and passion.

Yes, definitely the atmosphere.

He looked back at Sky who seemed to be deep in thought. "So how can you explain it to me then?" she asked.

Mason let out a quiet sigh to calm himself down. "It's not really something you explain. Apparently it just... Comes to you?" he tried to explain – badly.

She clapped her hands together in a moment of realisation then – causing him to jump and also surprising a few others around them. "That's right. You haven't kissed anyone yet either, have you?" she asked, albeit it more in general than him directly. "I should be asking Dean here; you won't be any help whatsoever."

Without waiting for a response from Mason, Sky left him alone once more, clearly using her fighting training to her advantage as she effortlessly weaved between all the bodies, not even giving Mason the opportunity to follow.

He was still looking for Sky when he almost ran into her about ten minutes later, and she had a look of utter excitement in her eyes. He was about to ask how she always managed to find him in this mess and not the other way around, but then realised she had the advantage of height on her side.

"Mason!" she shouted over the noise. "I've got it!"

"Got what?" he shouted back.

"The kisses! You're meant to know when to do it when you both start leaning in close, like this," she started explain, moving her head down closer to his. "Then you can feel it, something in the air which says you should kiss!" Sky was so close to Mason that he could feel her breath on his lips.

He swallowed hard at her words, trying his best to remain calm. Clearly the alcohol was messing with her brain, because although she clearly couldn't feel what she was describing, the feeling was all too present for Mason. Or was the heavy scent of alcohol in the room messing so much with his brain that he was feeling these things? He wasn't sure anymore. She pulled back after a few seconds.

"And then more experienced kisses use the tongue. Like this!" she responded as she then stuck her tongue out and starting waving it around.

Her actions swiftly released Mason from his trance, and he quickly moved his hand to cover her mouth. "Don't do that! It's not right!" he shouted.

Her only response to his words was to lick his palm, causing him to retract his palm in horror. "Dean really is great at teaching everything," she shouted gleefully, throwing her hands up into the air. "I understand it so well now! Come on, the countdown is going to start soon!"

Mason made a noise of disgust and looked for a good enough spot on his trousers to wipe the offending saliva off his hand. When he looked back up, Sky had already left him by himself once again.

However, luckily for him, the countdown was going to take place outside, with everyone looking up to the sky and fireworks as the New Year rolled in.

He debated watching the fireworks from inside, when he realised that it was the perfect opportunity to go outside and cool down, considering he'd been running around inside the building with his coat on, for fear anything should happen to his clothing if he removed it.

He breathed a sigh of relief as he stepped through the open patio door – which had remarkably managed to stay completely undamaged during this whole ordeal – and out into the crisp, cool air. His breath immediately turned visible in front of his eyes as he stepped past the boundary of the building. He slowly made his way away from the house and towards the group of people that had gathered a bit further down the garden before he came to a stop.

"Hey, Mason," a voice from beside him suddenly said, accompanied by an elbow shove into his arm.

"Ow," Mason moaned as he turned to look at the culprit; he came face-to-face with Dean. "Hi, Dean," Mason returned the greeting, rubbing his sore arm.

"We're going to have to make you less sensitive to injuries," Dean said, looking pointedly at the spot Mason was now rubbing before looking back up into Mason's face. "Anyway, I just came over to tell you – or rather, ask you – to look after Sky this year. She means a lot to me and it would make me feel at ease if you could help out with that, because you clearly mean a lot to each other."

Mason wasn't exactly sure what Dean was trying to insinuate with his last words, but decided to just put Dean's mind at ease, so he nodded. "Sure, I can do that."

Dean grinned as he slapped a hand onto Mason's shoulder, almost causing Mason to stagger sideways this time. "That's my boy. I look forward to teaching you next year. Have a good start into the new year." Dean parted with those words, only sending a final wink in Mason's direction before turning around and leaving him by himself.

However, as Dean left, Mason couldn't help but question what Dean had been trying to say. Did he know something that Mason didn't? Shaking his head, he decided that Dean's words could be thought about at a later date, so he just let himself relax during the last few minutes of the year.

Soon enough, the ten second countdown began, and at the end of it, cheers rang out throughout the garden, just like the people and church bells across the rest of the country.

As the cheers died down, Mason smiled. "Well, here's to a great new year," he said to himself, realising that perhaps a new year with a friend like Sky by his side wasn't a bad thing to get into.

He was just turning to look for Sky to wish her the same thing when he noticed she was looking at him strangely only a short distance away. Worried, he made his way over. "Sky, are you alright?" he asked as he reached her.

Sky didn't respond, leaving Mason worried that the alcohol had too much of an influence on her. He lifted his hand and waved it in front of her face to try and elicit a reaction when she suddenly grabbed his wrist, causing him to jump.

"Ah, you're alright. I thought—"

He was cut off when Sky bent down and pressed her lips to his.
