Chapter 27
Isaac's POV
When the firefighters and the police finally got there I was practically screaming at Abby to wake up.
"Sir you have to calm down, we're here to help." A man in a police uniform said through the broken window.
"You have to get my girlfriend out! Please, she just fell unconscious, I don't know if she's okay."
"Sir let's focus on you right now."
"No! No you don't understand, she has an anxiety disorder brought on by a car accident! She was taken off of her medication a few weeks ago but she was freaking out, please you have to help her! The last time this happened she was practically in a coma! Please officer-"
"Sir if you do not calm down we'll have to sedate you. We need to get you out before we can help you're girlfriend." I took a deep breath, he was right. I have to calm down. "Good, now what's your name, sir?" I heard a loud crash behind me and saw a fireman working on the door or the car.
"Issac, Isaac Crawford."
"Do you know the names of the other people in the car?"
"Kenny, Alex, and Chris Meyers and then Abigail Taylor." I pointed with a shaking hand at all four of them.
"Alright Isaac I need you to stay very still as we open the door, try not to move, You have a pretty big gash on the side of your head." There was a loud cracking noise and then the door swung free and I fought to keep consciousness and not fall, I had to make sure Abby was okay. The officer held me up as a paramedic came into view with a gurnie.
"Can you tell me what hurts?" The paramedic asked.
"My head and my arm is sore." It was true, my head felt like it was going to split open.
"Your left arm?"
"Yes." I groaned as the paramedic put a neck brace on me.
"Okay, on three. One, two, three." The pain in my head was excruciating as they lifted me and I almost blacked out multiple times.
Once I lay on my back people started rushing around me but I fought them off. "I'm fine, I'm fine. Go help people who actually need your help."
"Sir we have to make sure there are no internal injuries, there are other people helping your friends. Focus on you right now."
"I can't focus on me when my girlfriend and best friends might be dead!" I tried to turn my head as they wheeled me away but I couldn't see anything.
"Sir you're going to have to calm down or we'll sedate you."
"I can't calm down!" I heard murmuring and then the main paramedic say "sedate him" and then felt a small pinch before everything swam before me.
"Please..." Everything blurred into one gigantic moving blob before my vision went completely black.
~°~°~°~°~°~
There was bright lights all around me when I opened my eyes.
"Oh baby!" A blur of dark hair flew into my face and I let my mum hug me. "Oh honey! Are you okay?!"
"Yes mum, I'm okay." My voice was scratchy and my whole body felt like lead, what did they give me?
"We were all so worried! You're dad and brother are out in the waiting room, you're older brother is flying in tonight."
Everything flooded back at once. "Where's Abby?!" I was suddenly fully awake and trying to get up. "Where's Alex? Where is everyone?"
"Isaac, baby calm down. Kenny and Chris are awake. Alex isn't yet but that's only because they gave him some pretty heavy duty pain medication. Abby still isn't awake."
"Mum I have to go see her. No one understands, something happened back in the car after the crash, she needs me." I remembered her eyes, usually so bright and happy, they were terrified.
"Alright, I will talk to the doctor. Isaac, you had to get stitches though and had a very serious concussion, I don't know if you'll be able to get up."
"Well send in Chris and Kenny please." Maybe they know something.
"Alright I will, but promise me you won't try to get up."
"I promise mum." When she left I reached up and touched the side of my head. Where skin usually was I only felt soft cotton material and a slight burning.
"You had a pretty big gash running from your forehead to your temple, they used like 11 stitches." I turned to see Chris and Kenny standing in the doorway.
"Hey guys."
"How you feeling?" Kenny asked
"I just have a slight headache but my body is sore."
"That's because they had to knock you out. The paramedics told your mom you were freaking out."
"Because I was the only one awake. I didn't know what happened to anyone else."
"I would've been freaking out too." Chris sat down in the chair by my bed. He was wearing shorts and I could see a bandage around his knee and he was on crutches.
Kenny didn't look much better. He had two black eyes and a bandage across his forehead. He must've hit his head on the steering wheel.
"How's Alex?"
"He broke his collar bone, he kind of woke up a little while ago but was in so much pain the doctors just knocked him out again. They said with rest he'll be alright."
"What about Abby?" I realized my voice was shaking and Chris stiffened.
"We don't know, they won't tell us anything. Honestly I don't think they even know. They're just waiting for her to wake up."
"Is she in a coma?"
"No, she's just asleep. Matt has been in there most of the time and says that it's almost like she's having a nightmare, she keeps tossing and turning."
"What happened?" Kenny abruptly turned around and was staring at me. "The paramedic told your mom you were rambling on and on about how they didn't understand and something was wrong with Abby. What did you mean?"
I took a deep breath and told them the story of Abby going in and out of consciousness while having a panic attack. I told them how she seemed to be remembering the accident that killed her mum and dad when she was little. Kenny's eyes kept getting wider and wider but Chris was just nodding as if he knew all this.
"I didn't know any of that." Kenny said as if he was out of breath.
"She's telling everyone on her own terms." Chris said calmly
"So you knew?!"
"Yes, I did." Kenny looked as if he was about to punch something, but instead he just sighed exasperatedly and left the room, slamming the door behind him.
"I'm sorry." Chris said quietly
"There's no need to be, I got used to Kenny's temper a long time ago."
"I don't mean that, I meant I'm sorry you had to witness what you did in the car with Abby. I've never seen one of her panic attacks but I did know about her parents."
"I wish she wasn't hurting all the time."
"So do I."
"What about you? What's with your knee?"
"The side of the door cut it really bad and I dislocated it."
I winced. "That's got to hurt."
The door opened and a doctor with short graying hair and a big nose came in. "Hello Mr. Crawford, I'm Dr. Reeves, I've come to see how you're doing."
"If it's all the same to you doctor, I need to be able to get up and move as soon as possible."
"Yes, you're mother informed me that you wish to go and see another patient, we'll have to see. Mr. Meyers if you don't mind giving us a few minutes?" He must be all of our doctors, Chris only nodded and then crutched his way out of the room.
"Now, Mr. Crawford are you experiencing any pain?"
"Just a slight headache and my body feels like I just got beat up."
"Well I will give you some medication for the headache and once you're up and moving your body should feel better." He wrote something down on his clip board. "Let's run some tests to make sure your concussion isn't too bad and then we'll decide what we'll do."
The "tests" Dr. Reeves had me do consisted of me walking in straight lines and standing on one foot, which I failed miserably. Once they were over I was tired and my body did not feel better.
"Well it seems that your motor functions were not damaged, do you feel dizzy at all?"
"A little."
"Well here's what we're going to do, you are free to move about the hospital as long as you have at least one crutch to lean on. Also you have to stay the night here at least once for observation, understand?"
"Yes, sir."
"I will inform your parents, nice to see you're doing well." He went to walk out the door but I stopped him.
"Dr. Reeves, do you happen to be the doctor of Abigail Taylor also?" He seemed to think about it for a minute and then answered.
"Yes, I believe I do, she was in the crash as well."
"Yes, do you know if she's going to be alright?"
"Physically, yes. Mentally, I honestly don't know. The paramedics informed me that she had a panic attack of some sort in the car and you witnessed it correct?"
"Yes sir."
"Well then we will be seeing each other later for you to tell me that story."
"Of course."
"Good day." He nodded curtly at me and left. I sunk back on the bed, what did he mean mentally he's not so sure?
"Isaac?" Justin poked his head through the door.
"Hey buddy."
He came in with one of my backpacks, and immediately started laughing.
"What?"
"You're wearing a dress." He doubled over and I rolled my eyes.
"It's a gown, if you must know and I think I look rather fetching in it." I did a pose and he slid into the chair next to the bed.
"'Fetching' is not a word I would use to describe you in a dress. Leave that to Abby."
"Well then I have nothing to worry about because she is definitely fetching."
"Yeah she is."
"Hey!" I chucked a pillow at him and he tossed my clothes at me.
"What? She is."
"Get out!"
"I refuse." He stopped suddenly then and looked at me thoughtfully. "Wait. Can you see your bum in that dress?" He started laughing hysterically at me and I threw my other pillow at him as he stumbled out the door crying.
I got dressed in the shorts and a T-shirt my mum must've packed for me and slowly walked into the hallway.
I found my way to the waiting room around the corner and my mum thrust a pair of crutches at me. "If I catch you without these even once I will ground you to your bed for a week."
"Alright, alright mum." Surprisingly she was the only one in the room. "Where is everyone else?"
"Well your brother and dad just left to go to the cafeteria with Kenny, Chris, and Matt and Lianne is at home with the younger kids. John is at work and Paul is flying in tonight."
"Where-"
"Room 428, down the hall and on your left."
"Thanks mum." I gave her a hug and she held me for a little bit longer than she would've usually.
"I'm so glad you're alright." Her voice broke and I hugged her tighter. I can't stand to see my mother cry.
"It's alright mum, I'm alright."
"I know baby, I know, but I was so worried." She straightened up and wiped her eyes. "Go ahead and see Abby, sweetheart." I kissed her gently on the forehead and then crutched off down the hallway.
It wasn't that hard to find room 428. The curtains were all drawn so you couldn't see into the room at all. I gently opened the door and then shut it behind me.
And there she was.
Abby was laying on the white bed motionlessly with her dark brown hair splayed across the pillow. Her arm was bandaged and she had an Oxygen tube against her small nose. The soft blankets were pulled up to her chest but her arms lay over them, one hooked up to an IV. She had a couple bruises on the side of her face including a black eye. Other than all that she looked so peaceful.
I leaned my crutches up against the wall and sat down in the chair next to her bed. My hand shook as I took her hand, it was warm.
"Hey baby, it's me." I took a shaky breath. "I want to let you know that everyone else is going to be okay. Nobody left you.
"I don't know what happened in the car but I know you're hurting, I've seen it in your eyes. And I don't want you to be hurting. If I could take away all your pain, I would. Abby, I would carry all your burdens if it meant meaning you smile more." I laughed a little. "I don't know why it's so much easier to talk to you while you're asleep," I shook my head a little. "Sorry that's probably really creepy.
"Abby, you're more than my girlfriend, you're my girl, you're my baby, you're mine and I'm yours and I'm sorry I don't tell you this as often as I should but it's true. And I know it's weird to fall in love with someone when you've only been together a short time, but Abby I love you with all my heart and I wouldn't dare say this while you were awake because you'd probably think I was crazy but honestly, you're the only girl for me. If we were older and had more time together I wouldn't hesitate to ask you to marry me because I can't picture spending my life with anyone else but you Abigail Grace Taylor. I don't want to spend the rest of my life with anyone else but you.
"So please don't be hurting baby, if I could I would kiss all your tears and pains away, I would do anything for you. You said in the car that everyone leaves you but I promise you right now, as long as you don't want me to leave I'm not going anywhere." I put her tiny, pale hand in between mine and brought it up to my head and kissed it. She stirred just a little and I squeezed her hand subconsciously.
"You promise?" I thought I was going crazy for a second but then she opened her dark brown eyes and looked at me expectantly.
"I promise." I laughed as she smiled. "How much did you hear?"
"Everything. I had been awake on and off for a couple minutes before you came in." I couldn't help the relief flooding through me.
"Well I'm so happy you are." I sat up and kissed her on the cheek as hard as I could without hurting her.
"It's better than being stuck in a nightmare." She got a faraway look in her eyes and I squeezed her hand.
"Well I officially unstick you. You're awake and you're not going to leave me again."
She laughed a little bit, oh how I love that sound. "I'm not going anywhere."
"Good."
"So everyone else is okay?" I explained everything that Kenny, Chris, and my mum had explained to me. "Poor Alex." She said after I was done.
"Yeah, as far as I know he's still asleep. I practically came in here as soon as I was allowed out of my room."
"Well I'm happy about that but you should go see him sometime."
"I definitely will, promise."
"Good." She yawned, I stood up and brushed a stray piece of hair out of her face and she leaned her head into my hand.
"I love you baby." She whispered
"Hey that's my line."
"Oh hush and say that you love me back, I love it when you call me that."
"Well someone's demanding after getting such a big nap." She rolled her eyes and lightly hit me on the arm. "Okay, okay. I love you too baby."
The doctor came in later and checked up on her. When he wanted to know what happened in the car we went out into the hallway so not to upset Abby.
Once I was done explaining Dr. Reeves only nodded. "It seems that she was having a flashback, and quite a bad one at that."
"Well what does that mean? Like, does she have to be treated? Will she be okay?"
"I'll tell you this, when Ms. Taylor is feeling better, we'll have a phycologists come in and talk to her. We'll go from there."
"Will she have to go back on the anxiety medication?"
"It depends. Right now I need you to observe and take note of anything unusual in Ms. Taylor's behavior. If she is acting strange or seems distant or depressed, it would be helpful to know as you seem to know her well."
"Of course." I took a deep breath and sighed. "Should I bring up her parent's death and what happened in the car up? Or just let it be."
"I would let it be for now, if she wishes to talk to you about it, just encourage her and make sure she does not feel alone."
"Alright."
"I will see you later Mr. Crawford." He nodded curtly and then walked off down the hallway.
It felt weird to agree to practically spy on my girlfriend, but it was for the best right?
I walked back in and Abby's eyes seemed to light up. She was sitting up in bed now and the TV was turned on some show I didn't know. "What was that all about?"
"He just wanted to ask me some questions."
"Oh." I could tell she knew what I was implying, she quickly changed the subject. "I need you to do something for me."
"And what is that?" She had that goofy smile on her face.
"I really, really want some french fries or chips or whatever you guys call them here."
"One batch of french fries coming right up." I went down to the waiting room and saw that Chris was there.
"Hey man, how's she doing?"
"She's doing pretty good. You should go see her."
"Where are you going?"
"She wants some food."
"You know you can ask the nurses to do that for you right?"
"I know, I just need to clear my head is all."
"I understand, I'll go sit with her while you're down there."
"Thanks." I continued walking toward the elevator and took it down to the first floor. There was a long line for food, longer than I expected at least, so I ended up standing there for almost a half hour. Which gave me time to think.
"Everyone leaves me."
The crash and the conversation I had with Abby kept playing over and over in my head. I figured she was thinking about the crash that killed her parents but I didn't know for sure.
But she seemed different somehow, almost like she wasn't fully there, so whatever it was must've really messed her up. I still felt bad about agreeing to tell the doctor everything that went on but if it was for her well being I had to. I didn't want her replaying nightmares over and over in her head for the rest of her life. She moved here for a fresh start, not to be constantly reminded of her past.
Somehow I ended up in the front of the line without remembrance of moving. I ordered Abby's food and also some for myself and then made my way back to the elevator.
