TWO

CHAPTER TWO.

The wall was smooth and the purest, most untouched shade of white that I have ever seen. It confused my sense of depth as I lay against it, the whole side of my body squeezed right up against it's warm surface. I wanted to reach up and make a scratch or dirty the perfectly carved wall.

I raised my hand, my eyes blankly staring upwards, and placed my nails against the wall. I was ready to mar the perfectly pristine wall.

"Hello."

I gasped sharply, almost choking on the sudden intake of air as I rolled away from the wall and sat up, my fisted hands pressed firmly against my chest. There was a silhouette of a man standing in the doorway of my temporary room, which frightened me. I glared at him, pressing my lips together as i swallowed and licked my drying lips, "Um, hey." My voice cracked as I tried to raise it above a whisper, so he wouldn't ask me to speak louder. My eyes stared at the jugular on his throat as I nervously rubbed my lips together.

"Miss, please come with me? " the silhouette of a man stepped forward, I nervously gazed at the carpeted floor as I rose to my feet. I wanted to glare daggers at him and give him a smartass remark in return but instead, I silently kept my gaze downwards, hoping he would leave and I could be alone again without any obligations.

"Hello?" The voice came again, his voice stretching out the vowels in an almost melodic way. I glanced up and am caught in his stare.

"I'm sorry," I said meekly as I reached up and rubbed my eyelid. "I- I don't... please don't." I stuttered, nervously.

He tilted his head as he stared at me, blankly. "Come?" He tried again.

I let out a defeated breath of air as I shifted forward on the balls of my feet, not looking up as I nodded slowly. "Okay. Um... w- where? " I didn't expect an answer. This man seemed robotic, just following orders. I wondered if he was even alive or solid metal under that fine pressed suit.

"Food? " came his melodic way of speaking, wording it as a question once again.

I only glance up for a second before returning my gaze to the tiled floor outside my temporary room. I nodded quite quickly thinking of the last time I satisfied my hunger, which was yesterday's dinner.

Without another word or so much as a facial expression, he turned then stuck out his elbow, glancing at me over his shoulder. "Come, Miss." he said, monotonously.

I licked my lips and viciously bit down, wishing for a little comfort as I stepped forward and gently held onto the crook of his elbow. He began walking, his steps wide and quiet as if he had been taught to walk in that perfect way that was both graceful and peaceful. The only sounds were of my sneakers slapping against the polished tile. I didn't look up, not once, as he turned corners and lowered his head to a few passersby, I stared aimlessly at the shiny tile and it's beautiful swirls until I caught sight of my reflection and I looked away, settling for staring at the wall instead.

"Miss," cooed the man beside me as he paused at a doorway. I looked up, thinking he was speaking to me and inspected my surroundings.

"Yes, come in." My gaze immediately snapped to a still form standing next to a smooth black wall. It was painted, I noticed as I looked at the other all identically smooth white walls. I licked my lips nervously as I felt her gaze on me. I refuse to look at her. She must have some say in why we've been forced to stay here in this alien place. We wanted to go home, but these long lean figures wrapped in black cloth from head to toe shoved us all in rooms and told us to wait.

I'd first thought this would be the end, that I was finally getting my punishment for being so imperfect and humanly ignorant, selfish, angry, me. For all the times I let my emotions get the better of me. . . But then, I thought about my family and how much my presence influenced their lives. I wanted to go home and help my sister care for my little one-year-old niece and give my mom a hug and a kiss and tell her I love her. I wanted to spend just one more night in my room, spinning in circles and laughing at anything anything humorous, or finally being able to take off my bra and pants, sprawled out on my bed with my body pillow snuggled against me. I wanted to go back to the life I swore was boring and useless.

I faintly felt the man who had brought me here call out to me before gently sliding his arm away and walking away after a short bow to the woman still standing still near the black wall.

I now stared intently at the glossy tile, feeling my eyes water up at the thought of missing home. I felt a weight in my chest, a brick placed atop my bleeding heart. I looked up.

Her soft eyes stared unblinkingly at me, her hands clasped just under her belly button. Her hair straight black hair was braided and pinned up and, from what I could tell, she seemed to be wearing a silky pink robe with flowers on it. I blinked and looked away, making a small noise in the back of my throat.

I saw her move in my peripheral vision and inched my foot back, feeling uncomfortable.

"Join me, dítě."

I stared at her. Her dark chocolate eyes seeming lifeless. I saw no emotion in them which scared me. Was she a robot like the man who brought me here? It frightened me. She was neither happy nor sad. Just. . . empty.

I breathed deeply, nodding before taking slow tentative steps closer to her.

"Do you like fruit, dítě?" she asked, monotonously.

My eyelids lowered as my jaw clenched, irritably. I took a breath, "Who's that?" My voice commanded, coming out stronger than I thought it would.

"I thought fruit was of Earth?" She questioned, confused, tilting her head curiously to one side.

"No, I mean," I glanced around the room. "dítě." I tried copying her pronunciation but stuttered horribly.

"You are dítě..., dítě." the corners of her lips turned up in a small smile. "It can mean child, baby, kid, or little one when translated into English of Earth." She stated softly.

I didn't say anything as I pondered this. Did I know her? I wracked my brain for something, anything but irritatingly, came up with nothing. Why was she calling me such familiarized names?

I heard the clinking of silverware and looked up and spotted two new people in the room, setting platters of fruit on a low table. They looked to be twins and looked alike in almost everyway. They even wore the exact same black and white bow tie suit with a white cloth neatly folded over their forearm. Their expressions stoic and their dark brown hair messily over their eyes.

"Děkuji, to bude všechno." I pursed my lips as I stared at her lips move as she spoke the unfamiliar language to the identical men.

They bowed and left, brushing past me. I stared after them, catching the eye of one of them. I opened my mouth to speak but, they were already out the door.

"Come, dítě. Eat." she cooed softly as she grabbed some kiwi slices and sat on the carpeted floor, calmly eating. I swallowed my worries down and walked the distance to the small table and sat diagonally from her, eyeing the grapes.

I blinked rapidly, "W- what's your name?" I tried to cover my stutter with a heavy sigh but that only made me sound like I was beginning to hyperventilate.

She looked up from her kiwi slices, surprised I was initiating conversation. "Daiyin." She replied, staring unblinkingly into my eyes. I stared back.

"Katia. I'm Katia, nice to meet you, Daiyin." I replied, meekly. My eyes bounced off the walls, scanning each detail in the room rather than looking at Daiyin. I noticed this room was more like a cozy library than an actual bedroom as I'd originally thought.

I reached for the banana slices and slowly slipped them into my mouth, chewing as casually as possible. I wasn't nervous. I just didn't know what to do or say or think.

"You are my daughter."

A sharp intake of breath immediately caused me to suck banana pieces into my windpipe and start panickingly coughing to get them out as I snapped to a standing position and bent over, hurling half chewed banana bits to the soft fluffy carpet. Once I could breathe again, I slowly turned my head, keeping my gaze locked forward as Daiyin came into view. My eyes narrowed, seeking the truth. "What do you mean?" I choked out, still gasping.
