Chapter 7
Song of the chapter: Million Dollar Bills - Lorde
The guys left early that morning to rehearse for their performance later in the day. We took our time with our outfits, carefully scouring our over packed suitcases and totes.
After five whole hours of trying on and discarding clothes that were either too posh (Tyler) or too Rae (Min), we found our way to the valley leaving Rae's room a beautiful disaster. The perks of being a female in the 21st century.
The desert heat combined with the intense party atmosphere, oddly enough, made the afternoon sensational. The place was teeming with all sorts of people donning a hippy façade for the weekend and enjoying themselves immensely.
We jammed to everyone from Chance the Rapper to Imagine Dragons to Soundgarden, fist pumping and swaying to the music.
As the sun bade farewell to us and the darkness descended on the desert party, we hung out with the band, joining in their ridiculously hilarious pre-show rituals.
"Remind me again why I'm wearing your shirt on my head," I asked Cameron, seated on a large couch in their tent.
"It'll give us good luck because your positivity will radiate through it when I'm wearing it," he replied, doing cartwheels across the grass carpet.
The soundtrack to their madness was Fun. wrapping up their last set for the night. Lyle and Min were playing guitar and humming one of their favourite tunes while Rae arm wrestled Aidan, helping him to loosen up to make it easier for him to drum.
They played for the next two hours with us dancing and singing along like the crazed fans we are backstage, on total fangirl overdrive. The crowd was going wild, rocking out, hands flying and heads bopping.
I was proud of Mitchell, watching him do what he loves and having an awesome time with his best friends. It always warmed my heart when he performed and I was there to watch, mostly because I happened to be a ridiculously huge fan.
Later, we attended one of the numerous after parties hosted by Kelly Osbourne. Swarms of paparazzi were camped outside the Native American style tent, snapping pictures of the fresh, well-known faces present.
Ty and I headed to the bar to get some drinks while Rae and Min with the guys rubbed shoulders with the other members of the elite, making pleasant conversation.
I noticed Mitchell talking to the gorgeous Paisley Reiner, one of Ty's oldest model friends. The leggy brunette was laughing at one of his silly jokes. Obviously because of the way he says it in his adorable accent, I thought.
I was clearly jealous for many reasons and Ty seemed to realise this because she asked me if I was okay.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Why wouldn't I be?" I replied, brushing it off.
"Because of the way you kissed last night. There is real chemistry between you guys and I think he likes you."
"No, it was just a dare. It didn't mean anything. I'm fine, Ty. Thanks though," I lied. I felt a little better knowing there was 'real chemistry' but that didn't help with my insecurities.
For the rest of the night, I was introduced to quite a few of their friends and we laughed and jammed to the music resonating from the hidden speakers overhead.
Drinks flowed and group selfies were taken, with me stuck inbetween Dave Franco and Covergirls for the majority of them. They were all friendly people despite what the media made them out to be.
Roughly around two a.m. Fernando took us back to LA and we decided to grab a late night pizza. The band was staying at their hotel for the rest of the festival out in the valley which allowed us to have a girls' night.
We sobered up after a few slices of cheesy pepperoni pizza with all the trimmings, stuffing our faces without having to worry about looking good for any guy that night. I went to bed with Tyler, longing for Mitch's touch - we were apart for most of the day.
"Zoe, you like Mitchell, don't you?" Ty asked me, half immersed in drunken slumber.
"Yes, I do," I confessed eventually. "I've liked him ever since I first heard of them, which was six years ago. You introducing us was probably the best day of my life."
"I figured. I've seen the way you look at him, always when you think we're not looking. Does he know how you feel because I honestly do think he feels the same?"
"No, he doesn't. I don't think the time is right yet. I'll tell him when I'm ready."
"Okay. Do it soon though because I don't want you to tell him when it's too late and lose what you've got going. Goodnight, babe."
It felt wrong not telling one of my best friends that I was secretly in love with one of her best friends. I really wished that Mitchell would at least want us to share our relationship with the closest people in our lives.
