➙ Chapter Five

You met Sebastian on a corner near a marketplace, oddly enough, without Ciel. You ignored the stares you were getting because of your attire and the lustful glances Sebastian was getting himself because both made you feel uneasy.

"My young Master apologizes for not being able to make it this evening. He had an emergency to attend to," Sebastian said immediately.

You sighed and shook your head. "It's fine, really. I have some business to adhere to as well. Care to join me?"

Sebastian gave the offer a thought. "I suppose since he didn't order me back yet."

"Excellent," you beamed. "Come along."

You began walking, but stopped a moment to beckon Sebastian to your side instead of him walking behind you as a servant would. He seemed to actually appreciate the gesture and nodded his head slightly enough for you to notice. But unbeknownst to you, he was assessing every movement you made and every breath you took incase you tried anything for the simple fact that he was being cautious.

"What have you heard about me, Sebastian?" you questioned conversationally.

"Would you really like to hear, Miss? I cannot lie and say they are all good things."

"Stop with the 'Miss' and 'Lady' crap, please. I hate being a noble as it is and I don't need being called something other than my name to make me seem superior," you responded, your walking stick clicking against the concrete sidewalk.

The thing you knew others didn't understand was the way regular people acted around nobles--the way they crossed the street so they wouldn't be in your way or how you got special treatment at restaurants and shops. It was nauseating, if you were being truthful.

"Of course, (Y/N)," Sebastian agreed, your name sounding odd coming from his baritone voice.

"On with it, then," you urged.

"Well, there are rumors that you hold men captive in your cellars."

You shrugged. "Maybe it's true."

You peered up at the exceedingly taller man and detected the slight twitch of his mouth as if he was going to make some type of sarcastic remark but stopped himself. Even his being a demon couldn't hinder the role he held in society at the time, meaning he wouldn't attempt to be friendly nor insult you because you were higher than him.

"Say what you're thinking," you pressed, stopping to face him. "There is no need for cloaks to hide under or titles to be afraid of when you're around me. I don't conform to any of the bullshit placed between us and I expect you not to either."

Sebastian almost forgot to breathe with the intense look you were giving him as if you were convinced every syllable was true. You had a fire inside you greater than that of hell and no amount of water would put out the flames. The ashes were almost blazing in your eyes as Sebastian continued to gaze at you, because for the first time ever in his thousands of years, he felt... intimidated?

Intimidated may not have been the right word, but it certainly was close to what he felt, yet he couldn't understand why. You were a human he could easily overpower with a single finger on his gloved hand and could tear you apart in milliseconds, and here Sebastian was with a sinking feeling in his deprived stomach.

"Are you okay?" you asked, mildy concerned for how the demon was acting as he had been awkwardly staring at you for close to two minutes.

"Apologies," he muttered, straightening up after catching himself losing track of the whole point of this exchange.

"Ciel didn't have something important to do, did he?" you inquired as you were getting tired of playing the game.

"He did not," Sebastian confirmed instantly as he realized just how smart you really were under your outlandish personality.

"You were sent to keep an eye on me and see who I really am and what I do," you elaborated. "There's no need for that because I would have told you had you asked."

Sebastian knew he was in a bit of a dilemma with what to do as this tactic he and his Master had come up with never failed, especially not with the subject not flipping out because they were being tricked, but you were definitely not someone who could be fooled.

You continued walking and Sebastian strode by your side. You sauntered down the streets in silence until arriving near a seemingly abandon building but the sign on the front that read Orphanage proved otherwise.

"My full name is (Y/N) (M/N) (L/N) and I grew up in a village outside of London that was so poor that sanitation was considered a luxury," you said, focusing on the building and not Sebastian. "I made my fortune and will continue to grow it until the day I die, then all that money will go to those who are never seen by the world as important or valuable."

You pivoted and gave the demon a dark, brooding glare as if you were Satan himself. "I will not be tested on by your runt of a boss as if I am the criminal here. I want to work with him as equals and colleagues, but if he insists on playing these games, then count me out."

Sebastian was baffled by your response and words once again, deciding now that it was a good time to get used to being ten steps behind a person like yourself. Even if he was a creature from the underworld, you appeared to be the real terror in the equation.

Yet, he still grinned, putting a hand over his chest and murmuring, "As you wish, (Y/N)."

You disregarded Sebastian as if he wasn't there anymore as you headed toward the building because this was the single most important part of your schedule that brought you monumental joy and purpose and no one would screw that up if you could stop it.
