chapter five
I woke up the next morning at 7:35.
Nolan and his friend Jake would be by around 11, so that didn't give me a lot of time for anything.
Besides texting Nolan, I ignored all the other messages to Alec and continued my extremely boring lifestyle.
I showered and actually took my time with my makeup and picking out an outfit, so it was already 9:30.
I ate a quick breakfast and turned on Netflix, almost falling asleep again, until the doorbell rang at 10:15.
I freaked out, thinking some fans had found my house, and looked through the peephole.
It was Nolan.
I opened the door, "Well, you're early."
"Yeah, sorry, I thought there'd be more traffic." He said, as he helped Jake carry in the polygraph.
Jake had short dark brown hair and dark brown eyes. He was semi muscular, but Nolan had more toned muscles.
Nolan had dark blonde hair that he kept gelled back.
"Where do you have a free outlet and a table?" Nolan questioned, examining my apartment.
"Put it on the counter."
"Okay, good."
Him and Jake set up the polygraph, and then Nolan laid down on my couch and turned on Netflix.
"Do you mind?"
"Not at all." I replied sarcastically as Jake started setting me up.
I was nervous, to be honest, but being in my own home was far less frightening.
"You don't need to be so nervous," Jake said calmly after he took my initial vitals.
"Oh, I'm always
like this."
"How do you
live alone?"
"Can we just do this,"
"Sure. Are the lights on in this room?"
"Yes."
"Are we in California?"
"Yes."
"Have you ever drank?"
"No."
Nolan laughed.
"Wait a second was that an honest answer?"
"Yeah."
"That's so stupid, I'll get you something to drink for lunch."
"Nolan, shut up,"
Jake yelled.
"Have you ever eaten at McDonald's?"
"Yes."
"Have you ever
punched someone?"
"No."
"Did you take Alec Westbrook's phone two days ago?"
"Yes."
"Was it intentional?"
"No."
"Did you figure out
his password?"
"Yes."
"Did you look
at his pictures?"
"No." I lied.
The machine
started to beep.
"Okay, yes I looked at them, but only yesterday, to see if they were in his gallery, that's all."
"Is that the truth?"
"Yes."
"Did you post those personal pictures
of Alec?"
"No."
"Am I making you nervous?" Nolan asked from my couch.
I didn't answer.
"Answer."
"No."
The machine
beeped again.
"In my defense, everyone and everything makes me nervous."
"Okay, I'm done. She didn't do it. Her heart only jumped those two times, otherwise it was steady...extremely
high but steady."
I started ripping off everything keeping me connected to the polygraph.
"Wait," I started. "Why don't we test Nolan on some questions.
Can I do it?"
"Sure," Jake said.
Nolan reluctantly agreed and started setting the stuff up.
"Is your first
name Nolan?"
"Yes."
"Is your brother Alec?"
"Yes."
"Have you ever
smoked pot?"
"Yes." He smiled.
"Have you ever
baked a cake?"
"No."
I looked at him, confused.
"Did you hack your brother's phone?"
"No."
"Do you feel
attracted to me?"
"No," Nolan ripped off the wires. "And I'm done. Can I use your restroom before we
go out to lunch?"
"Yeah, down the hall
to the left."
After Nolan walked away, Jake motioned for me to look at the form.
"Do you see that?" He asked pointing to a slight jump at the end of a straight line.
"Yeah, what is that?"
"The last question you asked, he lied."
"About feeling attracted to me? Why didn't it go off?"
"I don't know, but he definitely lied."
"Great, now I'm going on a date in public with the brother of the guy everyone thinks I'm out to get."
"Good luck."
"I'll need it."
