Chapter 3
Wendell finally arrived at the camp and immediately slouched off his bag in lethargy. He carefully rested his fishing rod against a tree. After that, he yawned and let himself fall to the ground littered with twigs and dirt particles.
Within a few moments time, he crawled up from his writhing position and started setting up his tent. Wendell took the tarp out of his bag and laid it gently on the ground. He unfolded his compact nylon dome tent and began assembling the poles. It was almost like stitching, he placed the poles through the small circular openings and attached them to the corner pockets. He then set up the tents for Vishnu and Talia respectively.
Wendell understood clearly the grave consequences of leaving equipment in an open area. This would denote any possible captors their location and it would basically be free equipment to anyone passing by.
After this was done, Wendell began gathering wood for a fire. This process usually didn't take too long as the place was teeming with twigs, trees, and bushes. He would take wood of all different sizes and types but birch was his favourite. He splitted some logs into halves, some into quarters, and other smaller sizes. After that, he'd shave a smaller log into thin coils to start the fire. With a cheap match, he struck the side and held it to the wood shavings. As the fire began to spread, he would add more and more shavings progressing towards the larger pieces of wood. At the end, he had a fully functional bonfire that could warm up the coldest of souls.
At this time Wendell could hear footsteps, he was able to recognize the heavy ones as Vishnu and the lighter ones as Talia. The intervals at which they stepped were different too. Wendell was accustomed to this schedule, he kept a watch and had a calendar to keep time; something that many other survivors refused to continue doing.
"Well if it isn't trusty ol' Wendy,"
"I take that as a compliment,"
"Hold up, you brought food right cause I'm starving,"
"I actually didn't catch anything today,"
"Boy, you better wish you were kidding,"
"I'm actually not,"
Talia sighs "Would you guys stop arguing? Wendell, you did a good job. We have leftover canned goods so we don't need to worry,"
Vishnu bickers "The least you could do is cook up some fresh bass,"
"You'd be lucky if you had sunfish," Wendell said in a satirical tone.
"Well, I'm going to my tent. Wake me up when you guys are done making dinner,"
"I made that tent!"
"Boy if you don't shut up I'mma seriously beat you up,"
Wendell turns to Talia and reorients his tone.
"So what'd you guys come across today,"
"About as much as you caught fishing,"
"Oh, that's too bad-
"Just kidding." A wide innocent smile appears on Talia's face. "We got so many med supplies it's crazy. Wanna see the stash,"
"No thanks, I'm probably never gonna use it anyway,"
"True enough,"
Talia opens a cold stagnant can of baked beans. She gave it to Wendell and he warms it above the smoke. Talia begins preparing a pot full of instant rice. After that's done they combine their ingredients and they place the pot above the bonfire. After some minutes of cooking, they took it out with thick tree branches and displaced it onto the ground.
"Hey Talia, can I ask you a favour," asks Wendell with a bit of nervousness
"Yeah what's up?"
"If you ever come across another survivor-
"Yeah I know," she acknowledges "You're feeling lonely. But I'll see what I can do,"
"Thanks," answers Wendell timidly.
"Hey Vish, its time for dinner!"
"Yeah, I could smell that from a mile away,"
