Chapter Eight
When I get back to my room, there is a ring echoing in my room. I try to look for the sound and it comes from the side table by my bed. I grab my ringing phone and examine on who is calling me. When I check my phone, it is from Riley. Thoughts and questions are running to my mind about what happened last night.
"Just answer the phone, Alice." I say, talking to myself.
With a heavy heart, I release a shaky sigh and answer the phone. I bring the phone close to my ear then, there is a familiar yet a serious voice on the other side of the line. With my heart quickly pounding on my chest, I start off the conversation.
"Hello?"
"Hi, Alice."
"How are you?"
"I'm doing fine. How about you?"
"I'm doing fine too."
After I say that, there is a silence between us. None of us decide to speak up. At first, I think that she hang up during the first few seconds of the silence but there is background noise at the other side of the line. After few seconds of silence, Riley speaks up in a very serious manner.
"Alice, meet me at Starbucks in an hour."
"Why?"
"No questions asked. Just meet me there."
"But-"
It is too late for me to ask why; she hangs up the phone. This make me question about what is going on, especially with Riley's attitude. I peek at the clock; it is 11:00 in the morning. With burden on my shoulders, I drag my feet to the bathroom and get ready to go to Starbucks.
I leave the bathroom with a towel around my body and another towel on my hair. I walk to the closet and examine the things to wear. I grab a black shirt with white snowflakes, beige pants, a black scarf and a brown coat then I change into the chosen clothes. I grab my white purse, my phone and my black wallet and leave the room then walk down the stairs.
When I walk down the stairs, I see my family gathered in the living room. They are watching some kind of soccer game, judging the excitement from Nico and my dad's faces, while Mary and my mom are exchanging gossips. Eventually, everyone sees me standing with my attire.
"Alice, are you going somewhere?" Mom asks.
"I'm going to Starbucks."
"What? I thought you have a day-off. I knew you are a bad liar." Nico teases.
"Shut up, Nico. I am not working, just meeting somewhere there."
"Want me to drop you off there?" Dad asks.
"No thanks. I'll just walk."
"Okay, just be careful." Mom says as I am about leave.
"I'll be back soon."
