The Space Between Us

They met in the violet hours, where day crumbled into night. The world seemed to hold its breath then, as if the universe itself leaned in to listen. She stood by the old bridge, her fingertips grazing the rusted railing, while he sat on the stone steps below, sketching how shadows tangled with the fading light.
“Do you ever feel like the world is just... waiting?” she asked, not turning around.
He looked up, pencil pausing. “Waiting for what?”
“For someone to say the right thing.”
He didn’t answer. His hands moved, charcoal whispering against paper, but his silence was soft—not the kind that shut doors but the kind that asked to stay.
They spent evenings like that—caught in the spaces between words, where silence hummed with everything they couldn’t say. She would talk about the stars as if they were old friends, and he would sketch the way her hair caught the last bit of light. They never spoke of tomorrows or yesterdays, only the fragile now.
But time is cruel to things left unfinished. One day, the bridge was empty. His sketches piled up, edges frayed, each page a quiet scream of all he could not say.
He wrote her a letter once. Poured all the almosts and could-have-beens into it. But the ink bled, and the words drowned under their own weight. He never sent it. Instead, he folded it into an origami crane and set it afloat on the river, watching the current carry it away—another silence between them.
Years later, he found himself back at the bridge. The world still waited, but this time, he understood. Some stories aren’t meant to end; they’re meant to echo.
And in the quiet, he heard it—the soft brush of fingertips against the railing, the whisper of a question lingering in the air.
“Do you ever feel like the world is just... waiting?”
He closed his eyes. The answer curled in his throat, but he only breathed. And maybe, just maybe, that was enough.
A love story with no ending—just an echo, drifting away.
