Chapter 3 - Problems With P.E
Problems With P.E
"Guys, emergency, pronto."
I call Lohan and Ling to our original spot. We sit down comfortably and place our bags down. It's our lunch break, and the library is nearly empty expect for some people reading and the librarian at the front desk.
"What's up, Rose?" Lohan ask, sipping from his water.
"Mrs Edgewood wants us to be in charge of the charity event this year to raise funds for the poor. I have to set up a team to help me and I need two vice presidents to my president status."
They both laugh at me. "This isn't the White House, Rose. But yes sure, I'm in." Ling say.
"Me too." Lohan agreed. "I can get some of my friends to join as well."
"No thanks!" I say immediately. By friends he meant the computer geeks who he occasionally hangs out with. I would rather not. Timmy number one have a crush on me I'm convinced, and Timmy number 2 smells weird like strong herbs. The scent is so overpowering I get nauseous. The rest of the computer team is fairly average and cool people, but I can't stand the Timmy's.
"I'll just ask Amara, Cory and some girls from the dance team." I suggest. I grab my notebook and pen, starting to jot down suitable candidates. Selfless people who care about other people and are willing to lend a helping hand when it came to charity. Unfortunately this school doesn't have many of those people.
"The dance team? Hello, Patricia is on that same dance team and if I don't recall you nearly gave her brain damage from those gigantic books. She can't afford to lose anymore brain cells."
I giggle in return and Lohan laughs loudly. We hear numerous shushes and immediately shut up.
"I'll ask from the chess club, dance team, cheerleaders, swimming crew and the....soccer players." I say, chewing the end of my pen in thought.
"Why not the computer club?"
"The soccer players?"
Lohan and Ling ask at the same time.
"I don't like the Timmy's, Lohan. And to answer your question Ling, we need diversity amongst our committee. I can't only have dancers or swimmers and then the rest don't support just because no one from their club is apart of it. Everyone should be included." I say optimistically, feeling giddy all of a sudden.
"Okay, you're right. But please don't be disappointed when people say no. You're way too positive for society. People let you down and you just have to move on."
I hum in response, focused on the small speech I'm jotting down in my notebook that I will read to people in order to inspire them to join our committee.
"Come along, guys. I'm gonna go hunting for committee members in the cafeteria." I say, standing up.
"What? We never go in the cafeteria." Ling protests. Lohan nods in agreement.
"Oh come on, guys. Please." I send them my puppy dog eyes. "I really wanna do this for Mrs Edgewood, and those little kids who will benefit from the money we will raise."
"Ugh, throwing the little kids card on us. You're brutal."
I smile cheekily at Lohan before grabbing my bag and hoisting it over my shoulder. We leave the library and head towards the cafeteria which is a bit close by. The silence in the school immediately gets louder as we near the rowdy teenagers. The cafeteria is filled with boisterous laughter and chatter. I open up the double doors and let my eyes scan the place. I see members of the swim team, dance team, chess club, cheer squad and sports.
We circulate the many tables, and so far have a list of about six people who joined. Some looked eager while others looked forced, as if they thought it was the right thing to do. And it is. Finally, out last table was the dance, cheer and football. I did not look forward to it one bit.
"Hey, Becca." I smile at one of my friends in history class. She glances up at me and smiles.
"Hey, Rose. Do you need something?"
"If you could maybe read this to all your friends I would really appreciate it." I smile shyly, handing her my notebook with my little prepared speech.
"Uh," she looks confused for a second. "Sure"
"Thanks, Bec."
"Guys, shut up for a second and listen."
I ignore the way eyes fall upon my friends and I when Becca gained everyone's attention. I see Asher looking as me specifically, his eyes curious, but I ignore as best I can. I feel the urge to push the girl sitting way too close next to him off the chair and onto the ground. But I dismiss the thought quickly.
"I would like to know if anyone would be interested in joining my...there charity event that is taking place this year in August. You wouldn't even be donating money but just a small portion of your time for the greater good. Many kids will greatly benefit from the little bit of time of your day you took spending on helping to organise this special annual event."
I smiled proudly when Becca ended.
"No thanks, boring." Jeremy from my Spanish Lit class said.
"No thanks." Another girl said.
"Lol, go somewhere else."
Disappointment filled my heart. How could people dismiss the idea so easily?
"I'd be glad to help, guys." Becca said, rolling her eyes at her obviously pretentious and stuck up friends. I send her a grateful smile.
"You clearly have no life." Patricia sneered, obviously remembering the little stunt I pulled in the library.
"If you're looking for better ways to spend your free time, baby. Give me a call I know a great deal of ways to satisfy you."
I frowned in disgust when one of the footballers opened his mouth. The rest of the team laughed merrily. Did my school really have to fill the dumb jock stereotype? Geez. I was about to walk away with Ling and Lohan, when I heard a voice.
"Shut your fucking trap." The voice that pretty much belonged to Asher sneered towards the dumb jerk who made that comment.
"I was playing, man."
"Go play with your fucking grandma, you dry fuck."
When everyone laughed at the jerk and his face dropped, a giggle escaped my lips in accomplishment. I sent Asher a grateful smile to which he only rolled his eyes at.
It was these small, small but noticeable things he did that made me believe there was some good left in him. When we left the cafeteria, Lohan released a long breath.
"I was holding my breath the entire time." He said dramatically. I giggled and lightly punched his arm.
"Well, mission accomplished. We have several people on our committee now."
***
It's PE now and I'm looking forward to it. I loved PE my whole life even though it stood for Public Embarrassment more than Physical Education. In the girls locker room, Ling and I pull on our white shorts and white T-shirt with our schools logo on it. I have trouble pulling up my shorts, and realise that my butt might have grown since the summer. It was first non existent throughout my whole life but now I can see a big bump in my backside area. Geez, that's what a butt must really look like.
"I have a problem, Ling. My shorts are tighter than it usually is." I say in horror, finally managing to squeeze my butt into the skimpy material. I walk over to the body length mirror and gasp as I see the little bump travelling from under my back and to my thighs.
"It's huge." I whisper in shock, analysing myself from every angle.
"Come on, Rose. It's not that big it's just the perfect size for someone of your size and height. It actually looks really great." Ling laughs as she watches me stare at the mirror with huge, fearful eyes.
"Tripping over your tiny ass, Parks? No wonder no body has asked you out. Ever."
I see Patricia and her friends from the dance team looking at me from their lockers. I was friend with most of the girls from the dance team, and could see them look away awkwardly as Patricia stares at me with her evil stalker eyes.
"Actually, last year six guys asked me out in the duration of four months." I say proudly. "Jude, David, Bobby, Alexander, Ameer and Manual."
The girls laugh softly. Patricia obviously becomes agitated by my words, so she slams her locker shut, silencing everyone who is watching us. I flinch backwards as she makes her way over to me. My bark was always way bigger than my bite. Meaning, I always threw around comebacks and sarcasm but the moment someone made a move I ran straight for the door.
"I bet you paid them to ask you out. Because you never actually went out on dates with them anyway. Have you?"
I want to protest and say that I declined them nicely but she speaks first.
"That's right. You paid them and pretended to tell them no. Who the fuck would ask you out anyone? Hidious piece of-"
"Actually, you're a hideous piece of shit, Patricia. Picking on people for no reason. What has Rose ever done to you?" I smile in gratitude when Becca from the dance team decide to back me up.
"She freaking disrupted Asher and I in the library. And now he won't even look at me. All thanks to this damn bitch." Patricia rages, looking ready to stab me. I subtly step closer towards Ling and Becca.
"Oh please, we all know that Asher never intended to look at you again after getting what he wanted. Don't be a bitch all the time."
When Becca turn around to walk away and smoke literally begin coming from Patricia's ears, Ling and I grab our things and hurry to rush after her. Like I said before, we were always defensless nerds our whole life. When we enter the gym I see everyone warming up for the game we will play today. Both girls and boys are dressed in their PE clothes, messing around and talking rather loudly. I tugged on my shorts when eyes turn to stare at my very revealing and very lanky legs. My legs aren't toned or tan like Becca's or Patricia's. It looks weird and pale-ish. And the current pair of shorts I'm wearing ends mid thigh. I don't exactly have the legs to get an award for wearing this shorts.
I let my feet shuffle towards the bleachers and place my water bottle and towel down there.
"Patricia is just a bitch, Rose." Ling says as she sits besides me. "Ignore her."
"Yep, I've been doing that for years now." I chuckle.
"Don't look now, Rose, but Asher is staring at you. Like one of those smoldering and intense stares that can make any girl pull their pants down for him." Ling says, fanning herself.
"What?" I cough. There's no way Asher would look at me for any reason other than thinking I'm ugly or plotting ways to kill me in his head. Before I could stop myself, my head move out of its own and in the direction of a sexy looking Asher clad in his basketball shorts and a black tank top. I so badly want to pull his top up and graze my hands over his hard abs and v-line. I wanna run my hands through his-
Jesus, Rosalie. Get your mind out of the gutter.
I shake my head in disbelief at myself. This guy tormented me everyday of my primary and secondary life in school. He's a jerk. Even if his hotness could shy away the sun, he's still a big jerk and meanie.
"I said don't look, you fool!" Ling gulps loudly when I pinch her to keep quiet.
"He's obviously thinking of ways to kill me, Ling. He hates me that much."
"Then why can't he stop staring at you? Rose! I have a great theory." Ling says with a gasp.
I look away from Asher's calculating eyes and turn to face Ling.
"What do you think? Where will he hide my body after he kill me?" I frown.
"No, silly. He will do no such thing, because he likes you. Ugh, I cannot believe that we've been so blind this whole time. All the signs. Last year, that one guy who asked you out in history class didn't wanna leave you alone and what did Asher do? He beat the crap out of him. Remember in freshmen year at the annual dance when he pushed away every single guy that tried to ask you to the dance. And that one time when that Megan Fox wannabe slapped you in the face, he threatened to cut her hair off and flush it down the toilet! Today he also told that stupid jock off for making that comment about you. It's so obvious, Rosalie!" Ling exclaim, loud enough to catch the attention of students close by. She blushed in embarrassment and quickly compose herself. I stare at her in shock with my mouth hanging wide open, my jaw on the bench of the bleachers.
"That's absolutely absurd, Ling! How can you think such a thing? He tripped me in the hallways and have been pushing me around and insulting me ever since elementary school. He hates me."
I suddenly feel more nervous under Asher's stare than I usually do, considering the possibility that Ling might be right. I should have put makeup on today to hide my ugly freckles. They were light and sometimes you couldn't see them in the sun but they were still there and ugly as ever. I should have braided my hair instead of let it loose. I should seriously consider growing my hair long now since Asher likes girls with long hair, and mine only end below my shoulders. Oh my goodness, I can't possibly be having these thoughts!
"Those are perfect and clear signs of a boy that likes a girl. He wants your attention."
"That's atrocious, Ling." I scoff, erasing all thoughts that Asher might like me. I can't believe that I even thought for a second that he might. There is no way. He liked girls with big boobs and huge butts. With nice long hair and clear skin. With curvy figures and long legs. I am not that girl.
"Just think about it, Rose. And ask him."
I scrunch up my face. Sure, I'll ask him. In a parallel universe. Before I can dwell on the thought any longer, Coach Briars enters the gym with a bang of the doors and blows his whistle to silence everyone. I let out a long breath and look towards the coach, ready to play whatever game he have planned for us. I always enjoyed it, but today I don't really feel up to it anymore. I feel shaky snd nauseous just thinking about Asher.
"Good Afternoon." The coach greets, walking towards the bleachers. A chorus of dull greetings came from the students.
"I hope everyone warmed up well, because we're playing net ball today for your score points for this week. I need a few people to go get the equipment from the supply closet."
"I'll do it." I raise my hand slowly. My face felt warm and I need to compose myself outside of the gym that suddenly felt like it got a few degrees higher.
"Rosalie..." The coach looks at me in question. I'm never usually the one to volunteer to do things or ever speak up. I just follow the rest of the students and do what I must. "Are you sure? I can get the guys to do it instead."
"No it's fine, I didn't warm up yet and I need the headstart." I shrugged, smiling afterwards.
"Alright, then. Who wants to join her?"
"Me."
I shrink back when I hear Asher's voice. He is doing this on purpose, to torment me and make me a nervous mess. I feel Ling nudge me with a knowing look on her face. I make a mental note to slap her later. She can't be serious about her 'theory'.
"Good, make it quick. This only requires two people."
I pushed through the doors of the gym and the moment it's shut I run straight towards the girls bathroom. I hear the sound of the gym doors opening again and know that it's Asher. I round the corner after running a bit and slip into the girls bathroom, breathing heavily. I'm not exactly star athlete. Luckily the bathroom is empty, so I wait till I'm sure that Asher took his fair share of equipment to the gym before I take mine. I lean against the wall and breath heavily. I see the bathroom mirror and can't help but peak a look at myself. My cheeks are flushed and my brown hair is framing my face gently, in bouncy waves. I frizzle up my hair, enjoying the softness of it. My hair is the one thing of me that I love. And I might like my green eyes too.
I smile at myself in the mirror and gasp when I see Asher stand behind me.
"Why are you smiling at yourself like a fucking weirdo?" He says, looking beyond annoyed. "You can't possibly think that you resemble anything besides a drowned rat, right?"
"And you're a big, ugly bafoon." I say back, but immediately regret it when he grips my shoulders tightly and pulls me towards him.
"I'll show you ugly, Sweetheart. You haven't seen anything yet." He smirks darkly.
"You must look at yourself a lot in the mirror then." I blurt out.
I gasp when his hands move to my waist and dig painfully into my flesh. That's gotta bruise.
"Keep talking, Parks. Get yourself into more trouble. You're just digging yourself a bigger hole."
I choose to ignore that, releasing heavy breaths. "What are you doing in the girls bathroom?"
"I followed you to see where the hell you were going, since the supply closet is in the opposite direction. Didn't know I'd find you smiling to your damn self in the mirror. Creep." He says in disgust. I try to push myself away from him but fail.
"You're the creep coming into the girls bathroom."
"Shut it. Besides, you're distracting the whole male population with this slutty pair of shorts you're wearing. No body wants to see your ugly legs."
I frown. "Why were you looking at me in the gym the whole time then?"
"I was wondering how you could walk around in something so short and be so hideous. Are you trying to fucking kill people with this shorts?" He growls near the end, moving his hand downwards to my legs. I shiver when his hand slide down my hip and trace over my exposed legs.
"Don't touch me, you big jerk." I push him away from me when I get the chance.
He stands up from his bended position, a smirk gracing his lips. "As if anyone would wanna touch you, Rosie."
My heart aches painfully but I ignore it. I'll cry tonight when he can't see me.
"Let's just get the equipment from the supply closet." I say softly, my voice hoarse. My throat suddenly feels ten times drier. He says nothing and stares at me instead, his smirk dropping. I turn around to leave, not wanting to look at him any longer. I can't believe I could have ever grown feelings towards him. At first it was just a physical attraction, but it's started becoming emotional when our families had dinners together and I would watch him laugh and smile, or do small things like comfort his baby sister when she cried. It started becoming an emotional attraction in my freshmen year, and I couldn't do anything to stop myself from feeling those stupid feelings. It is absolutely pointless. He would move on to the next girl and never see me as anything besides his annoying pesky neighbor. We would leave to college and I would possibly never see him again. My heart would just break over and over again, and it would be tough to move on from the person you have been in love with for most of your life.
I walk towards the supply closet now, with Asher trailing behind me. I can feel his stare on my back and wish to crumble in in a ball in the comforts of my bed at home. I can't wait to go home and I certainly can't wait for the weekend, so that I can cry all weekend and snuggle up with Lulu and Blue and watch Netflix and eat a whole lot of fried chicken and pizza. But then the weekend will be over in no time and Monday would come again, and I'd have to endure another five days of the week at school with Asher constantly reminding me that I'm ugly and no would want me. I'm finding it hard not to believe him, he's very convincing like that. I think college is the best thing and I can't wait to leave. Not because I won't absolutely miss my parents and my friends, but because I can't stand watching Asher everyday with a new girl and know that he will never love me back.
When we reach the closet doors, I push it open and enter. It's dark and dusty so I find a light switch against the wall. Light illuminates in the small room and you can see dust particles in the air. I wave my hands in front of me when I enter, hating the effect that dust have on my allergies.
"What the hell are you doing?" Asher asks, entering behind me. I flinch when the doors bang close. It's only been two days so far of the new school year, and I already find myself in a small space alone with Asher twice already. This isn't the brightest start the year can give me.
"I have bad allergies." I explain, holding in a sneeze.
"Of course you do." He scoffs. "There's nothing about you that isn't just fucking plain annoying."
"No one told you to bother me." I point out. "If you ignore me you won't even see me in school besides in class. I'm invisible like that."
"As if I didn't know that. But I can't ignore you now."
"Why not?" I frown.
"Because. Remember that stunt you pulled in the library yesterday? Yes, I haven't forgotten."
"Ugh, I really thought you would." I grumble.
"I still want my revenge, Rosie."
"You're childish."
"Not as damn childish as you for pushing those books on Patty and I."
I cackle to myself. "It's Patricia."
"Whatever. Why the hell did you do it anyway?"
I turn around to face him, and step back immediately when I realise how close he is. "Let's just get the equipment and leave."
"Were you jealous, Rosie?" He asks, his lips raising into a devious smirk. He crosses his amazing arms and I fight not to stare at it.
"Of you and Patricia? Of course not." I scoff, as if the possibility of that thought was completely absurd. The truth is, I was jealous. I want to be able to kiss him and touch him, not freaking Patricia.
Oh god, please forgive me for being attracted to Satan's child.
"Admit it, Rosie." He says lowly, his beautiful being eyes sparkling in the light. "You were jealous."
"Never in a million years, Dunhill." I say, keeping my expression neutral.
"Okay, whatever you say. But I do still believe that you were jealous. It's written all over your damn face, Sweetheart. I grew up with you, remember? I can read you like a damn book."
"Well in that case, I'd say you were jealous last year when you punched Jeremy in the face for asking me out."
He laughs loudly. Oh god, why did I have to say that? Now he really despises me for making such accusations.
"Where the fuck did you come up with that? I punched Jeremy in the face for spreading rumors about me the day before that. Not because he asked you out. God, you really are pathetic. Pathetic, ugly loser. I still wonder why Jeremy would even want to go out with you. He must be fucking blind and delusional."
Sadness overwhelmes me.
He's right.
I am pathetic. And ugly.
Without a word, I push pass him as hard as I can. I reach the door handle but before I can touch it, I'm pulled back.
"Let go of me." I demand, forcing my tears to go away. It didn't work, as the tear glands in our eyes don't exactly take instructions from our brain. They take it from our emotions and how we feel. And right now, I feel heartbroken.
"You still have equipment to carry to the gym, if you've forgotten."
"I'm not going back there. Let go." I urge, trying to pull my arm from his grasp. He doesn't pull away, but pulls me closer instead. He brings my arms closer and frowns, inspecting my skin.
"Why does it looks slightly bruised here?" He asks, softly rubbing my elbows.
"I bruise easily." I mumble.
"Who did this?"
"You."
"I would never-"
"But you did. Remember yesterday when you pushed me." I say quietly. I'm surprised that Coach Briars didn't send someone to check for us since ten minutes must have already passed since we left. Our PE period is fifty minutes and it takes us about ten minutes to dress. We're already wasted another ten minutes. Coach is going to be absolutely pissed.
I bite my lip when Asher's eyes meet mine. He looks confused for a second, before slowly his eyes change to anger. "I would never hurt you like that."
"Whatever, I doubt that. Please let go, I don't feel so well."
It's true. My head began feeling slightly dizzy. I don't know for what reason, but being in Asher's presence always sort of trigger some negative effect on my body. He lets go hesitantly.
"I'm sorry, Rosie. I didn't mean to-"
"Save it, Asher. Please, don't say it when you don't mean it."
"But I-"
"Can you please tell Coach Briars that I don't feel so well?" I ask politely, opening the closet door.
"Where are you going?" He asks. I swear I can hear concern in his tone, but from past experiences know that it can't be that. Anything but that. Asher doesn't care about anyone besides himself and his family, let alone me.
"To clear my head."
I leave without a second glance.
I can feel the heaviness in my heart. Damn you, Asher.
