The Truth

Partly Fiction Partly True
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The human mind is a truly terrifying thing. Memories. Fantasies. Every mind is different but still the same. It's the only place where the truth is ever spoken.
Speak your mind... Speak the truth... And yet, whenever the truth is spoken, people become angry...sad...joyful...broken...
I'm tired of the lies.
"You want the truth?" I look up at the interrogator through my lashes. His eyebrows climb up, surprised at my first vocalization in 12 hours.
He nods, eyes flitting to look at my red colored hands. Doesn't he think I actually did it?
"Then you'll get the truth."
I've seen it for as long as I can remember. Who's it you ask? We'll get to that later.
My earliest memory of it, I was about 5. Sitting on my carpeted bedroom floor, doing the only thing a 5 year old only child could do-play with her toys.
I hum quietly to myself, what song I'm not sure, playing with a combination of action figures, plastic animals, and Polly in My Pockets (I think). I hear the breeze from the door opening, don't ask me how that works, but when your door's close and then you open it, it's like you can hear the air pressure change, and I look up expecting my momma, or maybe my dad home from work early. Nothing's there, but my door swings shut. Then, my room gets very cold and a black mist hangs in front of me.
Me, being the five year old that I am, I just throw a little plastic dinosaur at it... It threw it back...
"So you see ghosts?" His apple green eyes stare deeply into my ice blue ones.
"...I don't know what I see. All I know is that it comes and goes as it wishes and is always a solid shadow."
"How does this matter?" He runs a hand through short, dirty blonde hair.
"We're getting there..."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It came often. Usually when I was distressed or crying or hurt. My parents fought a lot and it was...comforting. It never really scared or harmed me. Some nights I would see other shadows but It would always come and they would disappear. I never felt like it was dangerous until one summer when I was 15.

Sometime in June or July, around 7 AM, that was the first time I was afraid of it.

I was asleep, my back against the wall and I was facing the door. My bed resides in a corner and my feet are pointed towards the window. When I sleep curled in a C, I usually get blinded by sunlight.

I was woken from a dead sleep, when something slammed down in my bed. My body actually rose off the bed. I blearily opened one eye as goosebumps rise despite a quilt, fuzzy pants, and long sleeves. My house was cold and I sleep with a fan on so don't judge. Sitting on the edge of my bed, between my knees and elbows, is a black shadow.

I blink, thinking I'm hallucinating. It's still there.

I blink again, the icy clutches of fear gripping my stomach.

It's still there!

I go to jerk myself up, and it disappears before my very eyes.

"Did you tell anyone?" Another agent has now entered the room. He's taller with longer, darker hair and hazel eyes.

I scoff loudly. "And end up in a mental institution?!" I sigh. "Although I suppose that doesn't matter now." I look away from the two men.

"I suppose this isn't the end?"

"No... No it's not."

After that, I didn't see it for awhile. I did see other shadows and those scared me, but it never appeared to chase them away. Why or what I had done, I'm not sure.

I went on with my Life, trying to ignore my often sleepless nights. When I went to college, the activity only got worse. My roommate was terrible and always taunted me. At least until I hauled off and punched her.

She fell to the floor, her nose bleeding. I huffed and left the room, getting her something for her nose.

Then she was screaming.

"Stop! Stop! Please!"

I turn and ran back to the room. What I saw made my blood run cold.

The shadow was standing over her, hitting her repeatedly. Over and over and over again until she stopped.

I couldn't move and everything was covered in blood. I tried to move but I couldn't. I heard banging on the door. Somehow it had been shut and locked.

Then it looked up. Looked me dead in the eyes. It had yellow eyes. Then it disappeared and suddenly I could move. I ran forward, desperately trying to stop the bleeding.

"From there, everything was a blur." I stare down at my blood stained hands. "I told the officers what happened and they said I was crazy. And now... Now we are here." I reach up and wipe my tears with a sleeve.

"That's... That's an interesting story."

"But that's just it..."

"Its not a story."
