...Babysitting.
So, the other day, I was watching Adventures in Babysitting, when the question came up: Why was she called a babysitter? Well, I did a little research and came up with this factual and completely realisitic account written by *gasp* TaichouCoconut.
~
Not so long ago, in a place called Everywhere, adult humans called parents would hirer teenage humans to watch over the tiny humans called babies. The parents would leave these 'teenagers' with the babies so that they could go out to events or dinner.
However, these teenagers had one problem. They did not have babies of their own, so how could they be expected to watch over someone else's? Out of concern for their futures, they started this club called the Breakfast-No? It wasn't the Breakfast Club? Are you sure? Oh, that's right, it was the Baby-Watcher Club.
Every week, they would meet in secret in an old church, in their barf-colored shirts, they were the Baby-Watchers. During these meetings, they would discuss their job as baby-watches and cringe in the horror of these evil babies. All the barfing, and the burping, and the cleaning. But all of that paled in comparison to the most cringe-worthy of all. The moving!
You would think that such tiny humans would not be able to move so fast, yet if you take your eyes off them, you would suddenly find them in a different room with a sharp or dangerous object.
The complaints began to pile up as more and more baby-watches wanted to know how to stop these tiny humans from doing things that would get them in trouble. So, the Diaper Council was created in order to help these young teenagers find solutions to their problems. They tried everything they could to stop these children from leaving their cribs or other places.
First, they tried glue. But glue doesn't dry fast enough and only leaves a mess. And hot glue only managed to burn the babies. Super glue, now that was quite the invention. And yet, it didn't work, since the baby-watchers ended up gluing themselves to the chairs.
Next, they tried tape. It worked for a time, but then the babies grew curious and tried to eat the tape. And then there were times when it took too long to untape the baby, which resulted in being caught and fired by these protective parents.
Finally, they tried bribing the babies to stay still with treats. That, too, sadly did not work. Babies could not always properly swallow these chunks of sugar or they did not understand how bribes work and would ignore it.
With nothing left to try, the Diaper Council was ready to give up. However, out of the despair came the newest member of the Elite Burping Squad with an idea that would shake the very foundation of Baby-Watching. She proposed that instead of gluing, or taping, or bribing the babies, they should sit on the babies.
The idea was a success! All across Everywhere, teenagers began the pratice of sitting on active babies to keep them out of harms way. The babies were left no worse than when the baby-watchers arrived, and the parents never found out.
It was at that time that the Diaper Council realized that Baby-Watcher was no longer the best description for the special teenagers. So they said, "From this day, we shall not be known as the Baby-Watchers, but the Babysitters! To any who ask, we shall reply 'we make sure the babies sit correctly'. Let all who witness this day remember the hardships we went through to create this perfect solution."
Today, the practice of sitting on babies has long since been forget by babysitters in Everywhere, but there are still those few who remain to tell this tale of Babysitting to any who will listen...
(This is all a work of fiction. Please do not actually sit on any babies, that is just wrong. Thank you.)
