interview + five

This interview was done with the amazing meganbonn_! If you aren't stalking her already, you need to start doing so now. Give her your love guys.

Name: Megan

Age: Fetus

Reason behind username: Because it's my name.. HAHA not being internet friendly am I?

Your idol in the MDC: Well, I actually don't really have one as of now. It's not that I think I'm "too good" to the point that no one can be my idol, but it's just that I've stopped subscribing to the idea of hero-worshipping anyone. I stopped wanting to aspire to want to be like so and so because I really see no point.

What kind of graphics you make: Covers, blends, manipulations

What prompted the beginning of your designing career: I was looking for book covers for a book I had a looong time ago, and back then I was so impatient that I ended up trying to do it myself. And I guess I kind of just got into graphic designing.

How long have you been in the MDC: I'm not exactly sure, but over a year perhaps?

What annoys you most in the MDC: when;

1) people have no originality whatsoever, and blatantly copy your ideas. For example, in a competition audition where you need to manipulate something, they do the exact same trick you did. It's annoying, it's unfair, and just downright uncreative.

2) people who make a big deal out of everything and then expect everyone to coddle them. It's the MDC, dude, not your home. If you want to be babied then don't start anything here and get off your computer.

Best example: In the media

What is the best thing about graphic designing: There are no limits in graphic designing. We're now living in an age where technology is so advanced; people who don't do designing professionally can easily access softwares that enable us to manipulate images.

And the things we can do with these softwares are limitless. I genuinely believe that in graphic designing, anything can be done if you have the conviction to do it. Someone could tell me that they'd want a mermaid, a dragon, a pig-moose hybrid, and world destruction happening all in the same cover, and with enough effort and time, I could do all of that. Graphic designing has got no boundaries, nothing is undoable if you try.

How did you discover Wattpad: when I was Google searching for stories and saw it :D

Aspiring message to all your fans: always learn to take criticism well, but know that no one can make you feel any lesser about yourself until you allow them to.

On the road to graphic making, you'll find that there are many people who will pick your graphics apart bit by bit, tearing into your work and assessing it, before spitting it back out in your face. If you haven't, then you should look for a harsh critic soon, because this is important for you to improve.

Never start disliking critiques just because they hurt your feelings. Like I said before, you can't come in here and expect to be babied. Take critiques in stride, and work on improving your skills based on the critique given.

However, here, you'll bump into many people who will tear YOU apart, under the guise of being "honest" or "harsh". Stay away from these people, because they're just going to put you down, and make you feel inferior. You are all growing, you are all on a journey. And no one should be allowed to say that you're not good enough to go on this journey. These people will say whatever they need to hurt you and then leave, and if I be quite honest, a few of them are rather popular in the MDC. But I'm telling you now, don't feel like they're automatically right just because they're popular.

Next, always try new things and don't be afraid of experimenting. The MDC is so fast-paced and is rapidly evolving. We're developing our idea of beauty so quickly, that it changes on a seasonal basis. Don't try to make a generic graphic with textures etc that you KNOW is visually appealing in any circumstance.

Try new things, try vectors, try heavy photo manipulation. Develop and hone your skills while constantly challenging yourself to create a graphic that embodies the latest form of appeal.

And after you've sharpened the knife that is your skills, you'll find that you're already halfway there in terms of finding your own graphic making style.

Lastly, never stop designing. You're going to feel very low often in the MDC. I'll be honest and say that a lot of the less skilled designers or less mainstreamed designers are ignored for the majority of their time here. No one will even know your user until maybe a year in of you designing.

Myself and many other designers have gone through the same thing and there will be many times when you'll feel dejected and unimportant. But never stop designing because you're going to be great one day. Keep pushing through, and I can promise you that when people start to know you, it's the greatest feeling in the world. Hardwork pays off, so keep that passion going and don't give up.
