Chapter 9: The Nothing
As he and December were teleported, Bane was taken to a strange place. Everything around him blurred into a muddled mess of colors, like a wet painting that a careless paw had swiped over. Then everything came into focus. He was then in a white place that seemed like there was nothing there. He looked to his right and saw December there. She was still and unmoving, sitting straight up like a wolf statue.
Bane was curious and waved his paw in front of her face. "Hello? December! Are you there? HEEEEEELLLLLLLOOOOOOO?"
December didn't respond, she just sat there unmoving. Not even blinking.
Bane was confused and looked around again.
Where am I? Why am I here? Why is time so slow? He thought, looking around for at least something interesting.
Something caught his eye. It was a silhouette that looked like a winged wolf lying on it's side.
That's crazy. Winged wolves don't exist. What am I thinking.
But he was intrigued and began walking to it. It seemed like the farther he walked, the farther the wolf seemed to be. He kept walking but then, the same thing began to happen that had happened when he arrived; the colors began to blur and become a mottled mess.
No! I want to see this wolf!
But then, everything went black and he found himself in an unfamiliar forest. He opened his eyes that he didn't know he had shut and saw December and Tobias looking at him in a concerned way.
"Bane? Are you okay?" December asked.
"Yeah. Why would I not be?" He asked, shaking his head to try to clear his mind.
What was that. Where was I?
"What your friend is trying to ask is, what was going on? While I was teleporting you, I felt a disturbance in your being. You.... were able to move and think in The Nothing," Tobias said, concerned. "Your friend over here was normal, she couldn't move or think, she could just see. She saw you moving and she heard your thoughts. You thought something about a winged wolf? Bane; she said there wasn't a winged wolf anywhere."
"What is The Nothing?" Bane asked, confused.
"It is where your soul and being goes during teleportation. It keeps your being safe so it doesn't explode into tiny particles like it normally would in teleportation in the old times," Tobias explained.
"Bane, everyone learns about The Nothing in school," December said. "Why don't you know about it? And more importantly, why could you move and think in The Nothing?"
Bane shrugged. "How am I supposed to know this!?"
"Bane. Do you know what this means?" Tobias asked.
The blue and white wolf shook his head no. "What are you talking about!?" He was getting fed up with all of the vague talking from the two.
"Only demons can move, think, and breathe in The Nothing. Bane, I think you're a demon," Tobias said warily. "Or at least, part."
"What is a demon!?" He growled, outraged.
December and Tobias exchanged confused looks.
"What!? What!? SPIT IT OUT!"
"It's usually a winged animal that has horns. They come from a place called The Edge of Twilight. In their world, they are horrible bony creatures with melting faces and burning bodies-" he cut off for a moment to take a deep breath, talking about demons was clearly making him upset. "But... when they cross into our world.... they become like us..... they have normal bodies except, they are bigger than us, and.... and they keep their horns and wings. That used to be the way to tell them apart from us, but, they developed this invisible cloak to hide their wings and horns from public so they could raid towns and kill and no one would know they were demons...."
Bane was outraged. "I AM NOT A DEMON! I DID NOT COME FROM THE EDGE OF TWILIGHT AND I DO NOT HAVE HORNS OR WINGS!" He roared. A strange feeling was building up in his chest. A powerful, primal feeling. It made him feel good, better than he had ever felt before. But, it also made him feel angrier.
December and Tobias backed up. December looked scared.
Her scared!? Scared of me!? What is happening?
The look on her face began to make him feel bad, so he slowly stopped being angry.
"I.... I'm sorry I yelled like that.... it's just all this talk about me being a demon is making me upset," Bane sighed, his head hanging low.
"It... it's fine," December murmured.
Tobias looked at him with ultimate seriousness in his eyes. "Bane, do you mind if I do a test?"
